trich. species cold weather tolerance?
    #2204123 - 12/27/03 03:47 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

in general, what temperatures do trich. species tolerate?

a surprise early frost froze all of my pedros and perus about a month ago while i was out of town.

my smallest pedro died. the 3' tall ones all lived. three of them got a little frostbite damage on the tips, but one was unaffected. after it thawed out, it actually had a growth spurt. it has almost an inch of new growth since the freeze. my peruvian's roots froze and they fell over, but they are relatively in good shape. i'm rerooting them.

i figured there was no way any of them would live through being made into cactsicles, but only one cactus was fatally wounded.

they tend to tollerate anything above a hard freeze. they will tollerate mild frosts with some regularity, but if it drops more than a few degrees below 32f. they tend to have dificulty recovering.

many will survive an occasional freeze, but if it happens every year, sooner or later, they will die.

It's important that the soil is completely dry if you want them to survive a small frost.
