Colonization stops abruptly at bottom of jars
    #2204087 - 12/27/03 01:29 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

It's weird and actually kinda cool to see, but the mycelium in every jar colonizes all the way down to within a few mm of the bottom of the jar and stops... resulting in semi-circular white patches in the jars. I would imagine this is because the temp is too high in my dual rubbermaid setup and the bottom of the tub is actually hotter than the air... but it's set at 83 degrees so it shouldn't really be a problem. Any suggestions?

turn the jar over and give it a smack on the bottom to make the cake fall against the lid. Take the tape off the holes.

are you sure no water boiled in and settled at the bottom making the brf to moist to colonize?

It's the same consistency as the rest of the substrate. I just always have weird problems...

Mine do this too. Did you put a layer of plain Verm at the bottom? Alot of people do to keep the bottom from burning, and to help with moisture. If so... The verm has no food in it, the Myc. won't grow.

Well, if your impatience finally gets you, and you do pop the jars out, make sure you completely cut off and uncolonized substrate. If not your practically begging for contams.

I've run into this problem, especially with pint jars.  Go ahead and birth them and use a knife or spoon to remove the uncolonized portion(s) then proceed as normal.

I'd recommend using plastics for faster colonization times.

^^What he said, remove the section with a knife.

To fix this problem make your batches on the dry side, remove like 2 tablespoons per cup.

Also halfway through colonization, completely remove the tape over the wholes if you have not, and if it looks wet flip em.

It isnt a problem because it's directly relevant. And the search engine isnt some magical instant-answer machine. I hate how people are one extreme or another when it comes to bumping old threads. Either too tolerant, because some threads really dont need bumped, or too bitchy about it.
