Broke mushroom cake up!
    #22040648 - 08/04/15 04:38 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Like an idiot I broke my cake (just after sterilisation process) ( vermiculite, brown rice flour, water)  up because I thought it had too much water in. When I put the mixture in the jar it was very wet and on getting it out and breaking it up it was VERY compacted in there, even though I didn't pat it down, might have been too heavy because it was too wet?
So anyway I broke it up and added a bit more verm in it and back into the jar not compacting it. The only trouble is that all the mixture is swollen up already so I doubt it will ever be a cake again.
And guess what?.... I Only had a little bit of verm and won't be able to get more for ages.
I'm going to sterilise it again do you think I might still be able to get a cake out of it? Could I still use a broken cake to grow mushrooms?
Any ideas on saving this cake before I put mushroom spore in? Thanks folks!

Lol I really don't understand the OP much, but from what I gathered you thought there was a problem so you took out the contents of the jar and then broke it up? Either way if you put the contents back in the jar and re-sterilize I don't see what the problem would be. The contents are not going to be a solid mass regardless until fully colonized. Once again didn't fully comprehend your problem so I can only guess this will answer your question.

Yes that's exactly what i meant, thanks for your reply! Sorry for the confusion. But u reckon it should be fine?
When I took the verm and BRF mix out of the jar it was like a solid cake very compact. Now that I have broken it up and put it back in the jar its a bit loose, bits of the mixture are not stuck together solid like a cake.. When u shake the jar it's kinda loose! Scared it will just all come out in bits and crumbly after I have added spores and it's ready to come out of the jar!
Another quick question... Is the verm supposed to of soaked up some of the water and swollen in size before you add the brown rice flour or is the mixture of the verm BRF and water supposed to of swollen in size before you add it to the jar or just wait for it to swell in the jar like mine originally did? Thank you!!!

Also cake you grow mushrooms from broken crumbled up cakes or does it have to be a solid mass? Thank you!!!

Don't worry about it being a bit loose man, but definitely don't shake your jars any more lol. Once you have inoculated the jar try not to touch it much so you don't disturb the dry verm barrier. And once mycelium colonizes the cake it will hold it together as a solid mass so don't worry about that.

It can be fruited as a solid mass or you can break it up and try to shoot for a bulk grow. I would recommend keeping it a solid mass and following the fruiting instructions on this video: http://www.mushroomvideos.com/BRF-Pf-Tek

That video is everything you need to know about how to make the BRF tek work properly. From substrate preparation and inoculation to making your fruiting chamber.

Wow Dr.Satan your great. Thanks for answering my questions clearly. I'm new here and thought I was just going to be called stupid for not being able to follow simple PF TEK instructions, hahaha! So thanks a lot. Going to sterilise the jar again, add my spores then wait. Cheers!

Use 1/4 of a CC per inoculation hole. So 1cc total per 1/2 pint jar. Make sure the jars have cooled to room temperature after being sterilized before you begin to inoculate.

Thought it was about that much, thank you for the reinsurance though Dr.Satan! So I should have enough spores to make around 10 cakes from a 10ml syringe right? And when the spores start growing it should help to bind the cake mixture, yeah?
So I thanks you very much you been a great help! All the best to you!!!

Yea that should be good for 10 cakes, and yes once the cakes are fully colonized they will be held together by the mycelium.

Definitely a possibility, ive had it happen to me before. Very low germination rates, stalled growth, only got 2/6 jars to actually colonize

Opened a jar to find out what was going on and they were too compact  almost as solid as a colonized cake.

Verm can be bought online if its a sourcing issue, if its a money issue :goodluck: i cant start my shiitake 75 cause i cant afford more agar

Thanks again Dr.Satan!
Thanks toadstool5- they said don't pack the verm mixture in or compress it so I didn't but when getting that soon to be a beauty out it was as compressed as a fart before release lol. Hopefully I'm on the right track now by redoing it... Fingers crossed!!
Thank you folks!

This one time I heard you could make hydroponic shrooms, so I went and got some cow shit and submerged it in water. Blended it and squirted a whole syringe in. 1 month later I saw a cute little mushroom head poking out. I only grew 1 mushroom, but the growers doing it generally have almost a whole lake filled with cow shit. That 1 mushroom made me so high! I also threw up too and ended up blacking out. It was crazier than alcohol! Now I know hydroponic shrooms are the best

My guess would be they don't watch RR's BRF tek video and they don't read nearly enough to understand the process before they begin. There is too many questions getting posted about the BRF tek that are clearly answered in the video/on the written tek which makes me think some of these people are taking this hobby a little bit too lightly and just skimming through teks rather then reading them thoroughly multiple times (or watching the video multiple times). I mean before I even got materials for the BRF tek I read that shit 2 or 3 times and watched the 4 parts of the video twice. Not to mention I watched along with the video while I was completing each step to make sure I didn't forget anything. But then again I was striving for perfection straight out the gate. I didn't want any fuck ups

I prefer people who make their way through life without a huge trail of fuck ups in their wake I guess.   No offense OP, maybe you just wanted to play with one of the jars like that other guy.  Some of the things people are doing lately has me really scratching my head though.

I pulled mine out after I decided to ditch em. I wanted to figure out what went wrong by feeling the moisture and compaction. It was a cake autopsy

Watched loads of videos on it and read a lot. Made the mixture and it didn't look right but my bf told me it will be fine because I followed the instructions but it was too compressed in that jar that's how I know it must of been wrong. Will get it perfect the second time! I followed the recipe 1/4 cup BRF, 1/4 cup water and 1/2 cup verm... So don't know why it came out wrong... Maybe I should of let the water soak in a bit?

Maybe you're not using fine grade verm?  If you are, it probably didn't come out wrong, you just thought it looked wrong for whatever reason.
