Grow log: MS KSSS Popcorn to Coir & Verm (Extreme Dryness Recovery)

First grow in some years. So from the top...
Culture Preparation First, using less than sterile procedures, Nine baby food jars were poured and inoculated with Three drops each of spore solution from a syringe. While they were germinating, petri plates arrived. Using better (slightly) sterile procedure, large wedges were cut from Five uncontaminated baby food jars and transfered to Three plates each. The transfers were monitored for the speed in which they took to the new plates and Three were chosen. The remaining fully-colonized agar in the baby food jars chosen was sectioned in to small chunks for the transfers to grain. Agar to Popcorn After a 24hr gypsum wash soak, the popcorn was simmered for approximately 20mins, then strained, shaken, and spread on paper towels. The popcorn was then patted dry and loaded into Six quart jars and One pint jar. The agar chunks were transferred to Two quart jars per baby food jar. The pint jar was inoculated with One and One Quarter cc of the same solution used to start the baby food jars. Unfortunately, Two of the quart jars were lost due to inadequate GE filtration (Bandaid over Postal Tyvek). This left Four available to spawn.
Popcorn To Popcorn The One pint that was inoculated with the spore syringe was transferred today Ten pints on the same day of the first spawn. I've Got A Lovely Bunch...
 ...Standing In A Row.
Panorama Less Than Three Days Later

Recovering From Shake Moving Right Along Bulk Preparation Approximately One and One Third bricks of coco coir was then hydrated in a bucket. Once fully hydrated, Two and One Half quarts of vermiculite and Two additional cups of water were mixed in to reach field capacity. The mixture was loaded in to a contractor bag then place in a pot of water to boil. The bag was boiled until the temperature reached 145F and the heat was shut off. Temperature continued to rise, staying within the target range until the bag was removed. The pasteurized substrate was spread out, while still in the bag, to cool. Spawning to Bulk Once the substrate had cooled to room temperature, a liner was placed in an unmodified tote and half of the substrate was placed in the tote. The Four quarts of spawn were shaken on top and then covered with the remaining substrate. The spawned substrate was then mixed by hand and the top was replaced. Immediately After Spawn and Three Days Later
 Days 5, 6, 7, 9
 Day 11 and Day 12
Fruiting Once the bulk substrate had reached 100% colonization and consolidated (accidentally) for Two days, Two and Three Eighth inch holes were cut dierctly under the latches on the short sides of the tote. The holes were then lightly stuffed with polyfill that had been fluffed, folded, then rolled to resemble swiss cake rolls. One inch holes were also drilled at approximately 3.5 inches from the bottom and approximately 3 inches from the end on each of the long sides for a total of Four substrate level holes. These holes were stuffed with polyfill that had been rolled tightly in to cigar shaped pieces that were then layed in a cross shape and pushed through the holes. A small fan was facing the wall next to the tub. Day 1 (Day 14), 3, 5, 7
 Day 8, 9, 11, 12
 Day 13, 15, 16, 18
 Day 19, 20, 21, 23
 Day 24, 25, 26, 27
 Day 30, 31, 32, 33
Updates to come as the grow progresses...

Thank you kindly, Steve. It's amazing how things turn out when you mix a bit of intelligence with a pinch of maturity, don't you think? Documenting the grow might just turn out as satisfying, if not more, than the fruits at the end...
Ok, that's straight B.S. but it should be fun enough.

Alright... 4 days after the g2g and they already need shaking. Things are moving along nicely. At this rate, another tub will be ready to spawn on Monday or Tuesday. If things keep coming together like this, there will be 6 monos going, all staggered about a week apart.

Nice.
There is another way to prepare popcorn. You pour the raw papcorn into a pressure cooker, cook at 15 psi for an hour, immediately--after pressure is down--drain, rinse to get any remaining starch water off the grain, shake in a collander til all loose water is out, load into jars and pressure cook again for an hour at 15 psi. This way the grain is more throughly hydrated.

You need to add water before you PC. But if you do it works. I have done it with popcorn myself and more recently i did it with oats. Water, grain, PC 15-20 min (not an hour) strain and your ready to jar up.

A few reasons actually. I have been doing cased rye grain for 10-ish years. The store that used to carry rye year round closed so I had to find something else to use as spawn. I visited these forums for the first time since I learned my casing mix from here and saw some monotub setups. I had been off doing my own thing for years and come back to see just how outdated my methods were. I was still using an TiT... At any rate, after narrowing it down to wbs or popcorn I weighed the price difference vs. my own laziness and decided on the popcorn. It is easy to uniformly hydrate, and there are no floaters to skim. It will do until the fall/winter when the feed stores have rye grain again.

I have a popcorn grow going right now. It is a readily available grain, and very clean, the moisture content should always be ~14% since much outside of that and it will not pop. Photos of it always look good as its so clean and has good contrast. It shakes very easily and doesn't stick, its like a jar of marbles. The larger and less starchy grain seems to let air circulate around the jar better with no stalling.
In saying that I usually use other grains and only did this as I found an really old bag of popcorn in my cupboard which was left open and had taken on moisture and was not popping. Its more expensive than the other grains I get, but in some places I expect its cheaper, especially if you factor in having to possibly travel to get the other grains.
Some like it for GLC as it shakes so well and myc falls off easier and it does not take on too much moisture like other grains can.

I hadn't considered the ease of making glc with popcorn before. I'll certainly have to remember that for my spawn bags a little later on. It will probably be easier than g2g in my tiny SAB. I'm guessing all I'd have to do is pc a jar of water, squirt some in to the grain jar, shake, then aspirate...
