F-Secure if you're wiling to pay a yearly fee. Does most shit automatically, never had anything nasty slip through its net and I've never known it to slow down games. Not a huge PC gamer, but this is the best in my opinion.

Avast for sure. Unless your PC is 10 years old, anti-viruses should not effect performance... at all.

SHOULD NOT
and
DO NOT
are waaaay different when it comes to anti virus. So many AV programs are almost as invasive as the virii they are supposed to stop, and cause almost as many problems. Norton being one of the worst offenders ever.
I usually turn some of the "real time" features of my AV software off, and limit it to doing normal system scans and such at times Im not on the computer.
Just gotta be careful with AV software and how its configured,

What computer are you running? My computer is 2 years old and I spent £1300 on it(i5-3570k, 8GB RAM and a fast SSD). Avast uses around 9MB on the task manager list. The Avast process uses 0 to 1% CPU on real-time. I keep my computer extremely clean and tweaked (processes and services only on necessities) I still stand by what I said, unless you are running an extremely slow system, most security software should NOT effect anything.
EDIT:
Who the hell uses "mainstream" security software like Norton and McAfee? Now THAT shit is bad.
