heating my terrarium
    #2204000 - 12/27/03 02:46 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I'm working on setting up a terrarium. I have 2 45 gallon Rubbermaid tubs, filled the bottom one with water, placed my heaters inside, and turned them on. The heaters I have are for a 2-5 gallon fish tank, I'm not sure how much water i have in the tub but definitely less than 10 gallons. the heaters ran for a week strait and the water is still pretty cold, almost room temp(i have a quite cold room, a poorly remodeled attic). If I pull the heaters out of the water they get hot so i know they are working. What I'm wondering is should I get more heaters, or just one for a large tank, or is all my heat just escaping into the cold room, in this case what can I do to fix that, wrap the tubs in insulation maybe?

Go to Petco, buy a 100 watt heater. They're around $35. Then go to Walmart and buy one of their polar fleece blankets. They're $14.99 or $19.99.

I would get a better heater and a water pump. Water has a very high specific heat - that means it takes a lot of energy to raise it's temperature. Spreading the heat via a pump will help quite a bit.

i also live cold place, i got that stuff that u put behind radiators , rolls of about 5mm thick styrofoam, put a couple of layers on the bottom then some cardboard, or raise it off the floor, should give ya about 5 to 10 extra degrees heat .also sling a blanket over the top to stop heat escaping up there......good luckj .:)

A growing terrarium need not be heated as long as you heat your house in the winter. If you're comfortable in a short sleeve shirt, your mushies will fruit just fine without heat. Remember, you'll get a bit of heat from your lights. My house runs from the high sixties to the low 70's fahrenheit and that is perfect for fruiting.
