it's dunk & roll necessary?

Okay so I am working with brown rice flour cakes at the moment because I got a lot of vermiculite and brown rice flour free :-),I have only used grains in the past and feel I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to Casing. But when it comes to pf cakes I am I guess what you would call a noob lol. My question is when I birth my cakes do I have to dunk and roll them or can i just rinse them off and throw them in the shotgun fruiting chamber. Is the shotgun fruiting chamber the only / best way to go for cakes? Also I have 1 quart jar with brown rice flour that is completely colonized but obviously does not have a wide mouth to it so it won't slide out like a cake, Should I break it up in the jar & case with coconut coir and vermiculite (can I just put casing(s)in the sgfc if that's the best way to go) Just as I used to do with grain? Any input or answers of any kind would be very very very greatly appreciated as always, thanks

dunk and roll all the way! cakes are made on the dry side and the roll gives a great micro climate, as for your qt jar i would toss some coir or casing material in the jar and just fruit it right out of the jar, yes everyone will say a sgfc for cakes

you dont "have to" but really should do it!
you can use them as spawn to bulk or just fruit as cakes, your choice sgfc for cakes yes!

If you plan on expanding your cakes to bulk, use a cheese grater to break them up, you'll get faster colonization!!

I just soak mine in regular tap water for the 24 hours. Just make sure to put something on top of them to keep them fully submerged under the water. You will not get any contam's from the dunk unless you dunk it for a ridiculous amount of time, and even then it's still possible to not have any contamination. Just make sure you rinse them off in the sink before dropping them in the soaking container and once they have soaked for 24 hours rinse them off again to wash off any bacteria that might have got on them during the dunk then proceed to roll.

rinse the cakes before and after the dunk. it can get a bit slimey sometimes, especially in warmer temps.
I'd say borrow a drill or heat up something, yeah.

Thank you guys so so much, so if I were to take let say my pressure cooker and sterilize the inside of it dropped the cake in distilled water, then put a sterile plate over it it wouldnt crack or hurt the cake in any way right? Sorry just nervous about messing them up at this point. And after I roll them in the dry vermiculite, do i do anything other than throw them in the fruiting chamber? And what is the best to keep that cake on aluminum foil? Jar lid? Inform me, cuz I know that stuff changes so fast, it is hard to keep up with sometimes lol.
Thx -ganjaburger

lol, you're way overthinking this, once the cake is 100% colonized you dont need to be "sterile", nor do I think you have the equipment to keep things sterile.
just fill a bucket with water and pop the cakes in it.
alu foil is still good to use, we basically still advice people to follow www.mushroomvideos.com RR has 4 free pf-tek vids there..
roll in dry verm, place in chamber, wait cpl hrs so verm can stick to cakes and then mist until verm glistens!
mist again when cakes are no longer glistening. keep doing this and you'll have great looking mushrooms.

One more question for u guys (Ty so so much for everyone's reply btw) so I have the colonized quart jar with full colonization...it won't slide out like a cake

I sterilized an eyeballed mix of coir/Verm last night..to case in jar do I just put a light layer of casIng material on top of cake, seal back up for 2/3 days (let it slightly colonize cashing layer), then put in fruiting conditions? I don't think I could have ever grown a single anything if it weren't for u guys being so awesome :-)

You're gonna try to fruit from a colonized quart jar(I'm assuming grains?) Why not just break up the grains (use a bike tire or similar surface) and mix it with the coir/verm in a mini mono or something. You'll yield a LOT more.

It's brf, and that's what I was thinking, but..someone suggested to fruit straight from jar... So u guys think a brf cake will break up inside the jar if I use like a rolled up a phone book(Not sure if I can actually find one of those, who needs a phone book nowadays.. lol) If you have any other suggestions on what to use let me know, and let me know if any of you have tried it and how successful it was?

Heh you're going to destroy the jar before breaking a brf cake. Yeah case and fruit is probably best.

Hmm that seems tricky. I've never fruited a cake inside the jar before, but I've seen people have success with it. But, if you can get it out of the jar(never use a hard surface or it'll break), use a cheese grater to break it up into even smaller pieces and then mix with your bulk sub of choice.

One of my recent batches I dunked/rolled half and left the others as is. The naked cakes bruised a lot from drying, took longer to pin/fruit, and had a smaller yield overall. Don't skip the dunk and roll. Bake the verm if you are worried about contams.

How do u go about sterilizing verm in oven? How many degrees/how long? I couldn't just take something break the cake up in the jar, then case like grains?
