build an air purifier or buy one?

so my allergys are destroying me, and i wanted to get a really good hepa purifier. Im looking at some from blueair, rabbit air, coway, windex ect.
basically using this website as a guide http://thesweethome.com/reviews/best-air-purifier/
he's got some flaws in the way he did his testing, like he says the coway will be just as good after an hour, but he did all that in a 'sealed' room, with a door opening, fans on, people walking through, ect, all the data basically becomes flawed. Another pet peeve is he left the ion generators on and im not sure how i feel about those, they say they are safe, but the fda or someone who thinks their special says not to go over 50 ppb, and most of these are running 0.002ppm and thats in the lab. Real world shit can be defective and it might start spitting it out more ect.
Blueair 'claims' not only does it not produce ozone, it actually reduces it, apparently their filter 'traps' the ions. This claim seems so outlandish i don't know what to think. If its using an ion generator its got to increase i would think. Part of me was thinking during testing that, they only tested the unit during operation and somehow they found a way to 'contain' the ions inside the case, until its powered off, at which point maybe then it all leaks out. wish i could see if they tested for that and other things.
anyways so the bitch about these hepa purifiers is how god dam expensive they are not only to purchase but also for the 'yearly' and sometimes 'bi-yearly' replacement filters. Blueair for example is $160 a year because they want 2 replacements, most likely because they didn't use a prefilter.
The other models have better prices on filters or only need replaced every 1-2 years, but they do for sure release ions and claim they are 'good' for you and that you get ions from waterfalls n shit which is why i live in one.
anyways i was thinking about a refurbed blueair but im still worried about the filter prices on it. And i still think their claims are questionable, i contacted customer support and they said the filter traps those ions, and thinking about that just now, i remembered they claims they took the filters OUT during testing and still no ozone, so yah don't make sense. I seen a picture from the tests and they have a little hose next to the outflow of air testing for ozone, but thing is maybe its all pouring out the bottom.
now i know there's a few companys out there that don't use this ion shit, but then they use a shitload more energy, and without some test results i don't know how well they work compared to these on that website. I really need one thats gunna work good.
i thought maybe for a second, that maybe i might just build one, filters would prob be cheaper no markups n shit, but im a bit worried about the fan, what to use, how much energy that would put out anyways i was bored and i feel horrible for anyone who just read all this

i doubt one that you build DIY would meet the specs your looking for.
unless youre trying to filter a giant warehouse or something, it shouldnt be that expensive to just buy a hepa filter. the link you posted has a great one in the first paragraph for 250$
its not like your filtering out a clean room used for making transistors, anyways. after a certain point, the air doesnt really need to be any cleaner

ive actually built a flowhood before, but it had a furnace fan on it and it was super loud like you could hear it in every fucking room in the house and you could feel it pulling air from all the windows everywhere. But im not sure how to downsize that to something that would fit on a desk and clean the entire room still, and not be loud as fuck.
but that cheap $250 one uses ion generator, and its slow to filter, so like i said im worried with doors open that it won't keep up with cleaning the air. I have a bird as well and if those ions build up in my room it might kill him. this is something im going to run 24/7 forever, till i die, so a couple more years at least, so im trying to make it a worthwhile investment, and whenever i buy something i research it endlessly until i tire myself. i feel like theirs only one good choice, i just have to dig deep to find it
