Fruit bodies smell strongly of dirty socks

A friend of mine has cube fruit bodies that smell really strongly like dirty socks. The smell is extremely pungent and unpleasant. He used a desiccant in a container to dry, though it is taking several days. Are the fruit bodies beginning to rot? Are they still safe to consume in any way?

I'm no expert in cultivation but they appear to be drying not rotting? As this is a similar look to all my picked shrooms when they are drying. Wait for someone with a bit of experience to be sure though, I may be completely wrong.

cubes smell like shit when they are dried IMO. they look fine. if they are 100% cracker dry, they are safe to eat.

a few times i had cubes with a mysteriously strong smell like ammonia or maybe sulphur.
like old fashioned matches smell.
i was suspicious but ate them any way and the whole batch never got wasted and no ill effects

i hate to say this on a cube forum, but one of the worst smells to me is when a dehydrator is running with cubes, i get a weird gag reflex
one they are done drying, i still think its bad, but don't get the reflex.
fresh smells great.

Look fine to me. I do not like the smell of fresh or dry cubes, I would not say its like socks, dunno what I would say but its nasty IMO.
I hate regular store bought mushrooms too, only time I ever eat regular mushrooms is if its from a Chinese restaurant. Does the person smelling them, you or your friend, actually like mushrooms?
The blueing/darkening in the photos is perfectly normal.
I dry mine under a large silent PC fan before using desiccant to get the last of the moisture out.

You have to fan dry them so they're not metabolically active before you can desiccant dry them. Otherwise they deplete the oxygen in the desiccant container and you get anaerobic bacteria growing.

Fan dry for 2 days then put in an air tight container with desiccant/silica/damprid if you cant get the other 2

If you fan dry for 2 days won't they already be cracker dry?? Seems like a long time to fan dry them, but then again I've never dried cubies before so I really don't know. Someone experienced please fill me in because I have silica packets and I'm gunna be harvesting soon so I need this info <3

I normally fan dry for 2 days (daylight hours only though) This is just with a standard fan in close range of the shrooms.

I've known dirty socks that smelled like dried cubes. Your fruits look fine.
It's better to leave them out of a container though. The air inside the container will get moist. I know he had a desiccant for that but still. Using a fan or something would be better. Use the desiccant for keeping them dry instead of using it to get them dry.

So if these have only been desiccant dried in a container with no fanning (Currently no access to an electric fan), will they become ruined?

No. But it's better to leave them out in the open. In the sun or in any warm and dry place. They will just dry that way too. They might not become as cracker dry as with a dehydrator or a fan but they'll be dry enough for storing them decent amounts of time without any rot. Also, if you have access to an oven, use the air circulation mode on the lowest temperature setting and they'll be dry in no time.

Ruined? I doubt it I have seen a few teks where only a desiccant was used it was basically set up like this:
Damprid in bottom of bowl, some type of screen type deal suspended over the damprid, then shrooms on the screen so that they aren't in direct contact with the desiccant. Don't really remember what damprid is, but I'm assuming any desiccant would work the same. I've read not to keep them airtight as well until fully dried for the same reason one of the other posters said about moisture build up in the air.

I strongly recommend drying them in the dark, light of any kind during the drying phase will lower the potency of the shrooms. Especially sunlight

You can get fans in old PCs, and hook them up to old mobile phone chargers. Usually the voltage is too low meaning they just run slower, but better than nothing.
I have a fan heater which can be ran with no heating, but its very loud.

I don't understand why people want to mess with dessicants (unless long term storage) Food dehydrators are cheap...they work great with no noticeable loss in potency... I got a new one on sale for around $30 To each his own I guess

The reason besides long term storage is so you can get a more accurate dry weight. Even using a dehydrator the end result can vary somewhat in moisture content. Simply using the cracker dry standard doesn't mean 0%, it's more like 0-15%.

Fan/air dry that shit before desiccant. That's the problem.

Dehydrators are awesome, and can be used to redry desiccant packets.
I only use desiccant packets after fruits are cracker dry to keep moisture from the air from reabsorbing into the tissue. When mushrooms are cracker dry, they will pick up water even in low humidity, so it's nice to have a desiccant pack in the bag or jar.

This is applies to storage, you do not want to do so until they are cracker dry.
If you are desiccant drying them then you want the container to be sealed as much as possible. Dessicants work by pulling the moisture from the air in the chamber, if the chamber is not sealed fresh air from outside will enter the chamber and the desiccant will waste it's power pulling moisture from the new air. The best desiccant chamber you can make will be as sealed as possible and have a small fan inside to keep the chamber air circulating and absorbing moisture from the mushies to then deposit it in the desiccant.
That being said, desiccant drying is sub par. Especially if you have alot to dry. You will have mushies start to smell funky when you have a few lbs of wet weight to dry in a storage bin with the bottom lined with damprid. Slow drying allows the mushrooms to begin to degrade, and possibly rot. I think people are far more likely to get upset stomachs after eating fruits that were desiccant dried only, as opposed to fruits that have been dried in a dehydrator in hours where no such decomposition is allowed to take place.
