How come people don't do this?

Firstly, let me apologize in advance if this sounds dumb. I don't really have a whole lot of knowledge regarding all things political.
My question is, how come members of political parties don't write their platform in a way that it touches upon many different issues, so as to capture as many votes as possible? For example, I am an animal rights activist. If there is a party out there that actively lobbies for animal rights, you bet they will have my vote. Another example. Consider someone who cares very passionately about environmental issues. Normally this person would vote for the green party or something like that. But what if one of the major parties re-writes their platform such that environment is now one of the issues that they touch upon? There is a good chance that this person will now vote for this party instead of the green party.
Basically, I think that if a party touches upon a lot, and I mean A LOT, of issues, then logic tells us they will become very popular to a lot of people. Then they will get elected. Nothing wrong with this logic, right? And promising a lot of things doesn't cost political parties anything. It seems to me there are only benefits (they get elected), and no drawbacks. It's not like we punish people for not living up to their campaign promises.

I can't say much about re-writing platforms to directly attract smaller party voters such as yourself but many times special interest groups or smaller parties will make a deal to support certain candidates whether with their member votes or I believe campaign donations if they promise to support the group's issues.

Because you alienate "jobs" voters when you start talking about the environment.
If you don't think these politicians are saying the statistically most popular things to get elected, you haven't been paying attention.

There is always a trade off with such things. If the dems come out for animal rights, the supporters of hunters, meat eaters, and perhaps the fur trade come out against it and it becomes a controversy. They probably think it would not help them. If gop became in favor of all things green, some would turn against them. Gore lost on that issue.
The main thing is the big corporate sponsors who donate the most money and have the most influence make the decisions. There is not much money coming from environmental organizations, peta, or a lot of other things. Monsanto for example seems to control the media and govt to force gmo's on us and roundup toxic pesticide.
-------------------- “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835) Trade list http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18047755
