Anybody here play Vanilla WoW? I've been playing on Nostralius lately, and it's so much more fun than the current state of retail WoW, and it's free!

heard of star wars galaxies? That was the ultimate MMO that WoW replaced. The depth was amazing
Don't want to jack your thread but to me WoW quickly became "right click, press 1, 2, then 3. repeat"

Yeah, I always heard SWG was fantastic. I think Vanilla WoW is the best version. Maybe Burning Crusade is an improvement. It's certainly a lot better than the current version. It definitely got worse over time after a point.

SWG is still around if you wanted to try it. Its in a somewhat primitive state since its been reverse engineered by fans, but its still pretty fun. The community is still developing the game so it'll keep getting closer to its original glory.
Maybe you're right about vanilla...the expansions were when it went downhill.

Part of the magic in WoW for me was the sense of being part of such a massive community. To the point where that one extra purple matters greatly or the sense of privilege when you get to raid with the good players.
I don't think I could ever go back to it. It would simply be memorabilia. Ever since I quit WoW in 2012 I've been waiting for the next big MMO. This seem like rare gems when you have to compare them to EQ, WoW, SWG, etc.

This is about when I quit wow for good, right before selling my character for 5k
WoW was never the same again. They've killed it. Nothing will beat vanilla WoW. Raiding Naxx at level 60 with a bunch of hardcore raiders was the pinnacle of PvE encounters in any game at that time. PvP in vanilla was in it's purest and most ideal form, I think. There were balance issues all over the place, but it was never as fun as it was after Vanilla. The first xpac was ok but after that shit started going downhill in a hurry.. At the exact moment they started turning it into a more casual friendly game... everyone gets an epic! Everyone can PvP at roughly the same levels by facerolling buttons! Let's nerf ALL the raid encounters so even the scrubbiest of raids can take them down and experience the content... everyone gets a trophy!!
My days of WoW are over for good. I tried playing on a vanilla server with some old guild mates, but it just wasn't the same. I had lots of fun, got out while the getting was good and made a slight return on my investment. So I'm satisfied I think. Played that damn game for like 5 years straight. It's a completely different game now.. no bueno.

Wow started to get boring to me when they started bringing in battlegrounds. The World PVP made the game fun, angry, scary, etc.
That and the massssssive nonstop battles in tauren mill.
Think thats what its called, I cant even remember it was so many billions of years ago.
I had a lot of fun raiding molten core also. That was the latest raid to exist when I quit.

Yep World PvP was my bread and butter.. after Arenas and shit came out it pretty much disappeared.
I remember when my guild was rushing to be the first guild to open the AQ gates on our server.. this was in late vanilla, before Naxx came out, post BWL Opening the AQ gates was a monumental quest line that required multiple hardcore people or even guilds working together to accomplish it.. Just one part of it was farming like 42,000 bug corpses in Silithus. Another part was doing a full BWL clear in 3-5? hours.. I forget the exact time. Then there was tons of world event you had to complete There was like 30 other parts.
Anyway there was a horde guild that was basically on our same level as raiders, although we were #1 on the server they were just behind us.. and they were also competing with us to open the AQ gates.
So every time we had to do a world raid boss or take down the world dragons (also part of the quest line).. they would have spies in our vent server and every time we attempted a world dragon they would come in with like 2 other horde guilds and just camp the shit out of us. So we started recruiting other guilds to come flank and guard us while we were doing the dragons.
One attempt ended up with like 4-5 alliance guilds and like 3-4 horde guilds, probably over 300 people all clashing while we were trying to take down a dragon.. ended up crashing the server lol.
Anyway when they were doing their 5 hour BWL clear, we learned that they wiped like 4 hours in and were running back, so we all went to blackrock mountain and then camped the fuck out of them as they were trying to walk back into the instance, lol. We ended up fucking their 5 hour clear and then went and opened the AQ gates ourselves.
Good times. Also all the PvPs in Stranglethorn.. and yeah Tauren Mill was awesome

I loved the fist 3 expansions or so.. man.. when WoW first came out (Beta especially) I was blown away, FUCKING BLOWN away. Man, just had not seen any game fleshed out and brought me into an rpg world like that before. But as many have said, its not the same, a lot has to do with catering to casuals. That and it being old as fuck

The big thing that blew me away in WOW was the seamless movement from one zone to another with no loading screen. I was like 'OMGWTFBBQHOWDIDTHEYDOTHATMAGICSHIZ'
Oh, and then flying from one zone tower to another the first time. Or the first time you flew from a really far away (but still on the same map so no loading) tower back to orgrimaar or wherevers.
Back then I really liked the cartoony graphics too, if only because they did a great job with the world design and such so it made what was a pretty low poly, easy to run game, look nice.
When my friends and I all played SWG, we used to go pick some uber badass looking planet like dantooine or something, go up on a hill, then turn allllllllll the video settings up to maxmaxmaxmamaxmax just to see the pretties. Of course back then even a bleeding edge machine got like 5fps max if you did that, because SWG's engine had capabilities built in that farrrrr exceeded current day hardware.
WoW on the other hand, was made to look good even on pretty low settings and bleh hardware.

I'm waiting on Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, check out the website, from Everquest designer Brad Mcquaid, sure most of you have heard of him. Anywho, it's a game specifically catered to making friends and grouping to complete the vast majority of goals in the game. Big emphasis on grouping. Won't be out for a while, but I've waited this long . Definitely worth a peak, give it a glance.

Meh. If anyone still plays wow hit me up for battletag. I'm always up for PvP or doing old raids for achievements or mounts.
Following where the topic headed, I really liked the BC and LK expansions. I didn't really like Cata and MoP was awful. Quit entirely during that Pandaland shit. Wow gets repetitive but I still like it, at least right now. Been getting the subs with gold.

Vanilla wow sucked me in like heroin.
Tried the 14 day trial when I was sick on spring break and I never stopped playing. I literally couldn't get enough.
I kept playing all the way up to the Litch King expansion and quit after that. I found myself on my flying mount just flying around aimlessly.
I had to lie to get my flying mount.. I promised I wouldn't try to get it if this group ran through just for one person to get it. I rolled for it and got it muhahahaha

I still enjoy wow. I do however miss the vanilla days... I tried a private server for a little but didn't care for it. I enjoy the social aspects of the game. Level 100 quests get quite intense and keep you playing. It's addicting. Sometimes I just log in and chill by a waterfall and fish. The addition of the garrison is pretty sick, I have my own city and fleet of ships. There is always something to do... The music is nice and the ambient sounds are straight as well.

Yeah when you hit lvl 90-92 you receive a quest line that build you a basic "Garrison" (its like a fort). At first the fort is just small huts but can be upgraded over time and by doing quests. Eventually it turns into a bigger garrison fortress. This is yours. No one Elise's. You customize the building in the fort. So I'm a herbalist and Alchemist; So I have a alchemy trainer building, and a herb garden. I have a bunch of other fun buildings too. One lets me stay mounted while attacking in Draenor (awesome). I have a building for portals too called a "Spirit Lodge". Anyways but yeah you even get "Followers" that you can send on missions. Then you build a huge set of docks with vendors... You send your ships on missions and build bigger ships and send those ships... there's just too much to do. They have made it so you can't get bored lol.

I would be willing to make an char to found a guild that dedicates itself to mind controlling people into lava in the BWL/MC chamber
Right now I do have a 25 rogue on that server but haven't played for a month or so.
It's a quality server though, LOTS of world pvp, has a very active feel to it.

If you guys want a new/unique MMO to try, I've been trying out EVE onlines 30 day free trial.
Seems like a super in depth game so far. Mostly spaceship based, tons of customization/different build types. And you can even fly ships manually once you get good enough, so no more of that stale turn based MMO combat
And, the big sell, the EVE people are currently working on EVE valkyrie, which is VIRTUAL EVE online. the first virtual MMO is en route folks

They added hands on flying into EVE?
I just never liked how point and click the controls were never made it too engaging for me though it is a fantastically constructed game. Also I always feel like starting this late in the game I'll never be relevant the way that skill upgrades work.

I'm playing Nostalrius atm as well & was thinking of coming on here to see if anyone else did. I play Horde, characters name is Kremzeek only level 23 right now. Playing with an old friend but was looking for more peeps to play/join a guild with or even roll a new character with. I'm about to jump on now.
As far as new MMO's go I am kinda interested in the new Warhammer 40K one, don't know anything about it though other then its a more shooter sort of MMO.

WoW has been Vanilla since its inception. I stopped playing MMORPGs after EQ for that reason. Everything just became so care-bearesque. There is virtually no griefing of any kind anymore. no trains, no ninja looting, no effective corpse camping. boring.

Vanilla was the only version that did still have some semblance of griefing, i.e. you could kill people on the airship and they'd have to go swim out to the middle of the fucking ocean to respawn or take durability damage but you're right its not as exciting or awesome as full drop loot
