A little cranky Chodamunky?.. your issues with people in labcoats are ridiculous. They aren't trying to be reality gurus. They're trying to be investigators of the universe using techniques that produce results. It's all fine and dandy that you can understand "everything" on mushrooms, but without investigating stuff with a labcoat on you'll never produce the atomic bomb or replace the combustion engine with a clean-running fuel cell.

Really? I've never heard of these leaps and bounds (along with 6 billion + other people in the world).

Good point man. What has string theory done for us? Just curious.

It is still in its infancy...

What has quantum theory done for you?

(hint: what are you using right now?)

Whats this got to do with string theory?

I was merely making an example of what an obscure physics theory can do for mankind

String theory is still VERY young, as theories go. If it turns out that string theory IS a valid theory, there is no way of knowing what effect it will have on the future development of technology...but having a single equation for all physical processes would certainly simplify a great many things in physics/technology.

I'm not debating that it could or couldnt do things for mankind, I'm just curious as to what it is doing now.

I want to know more about is this ^^^

What has string theory predicted? Where are the practical applications?

There are no practical applications, as yet.

The "predicions" I'm talking about have only to do with certain experimental results that could help prove or disprove string theory.

It will probably be quite a few years before string theory is advanced enough to have any "practical" use.

I loved this thread, too, even though I couldn't contribute.  I have a difficult time understanding anything related to Einstein, but seeing discussion helps me to become more familiar with it.

Trendal, the whole point of my groggy post (and I do apologize if I came off as pissed off or irritable) is that our society values science like it is a religion, and the few people in lab coats are the priests that will reveal to the world how things are, how things were, and how they will be . I'm not talking about the science that ANYONE can do: for example you can prove to yourself that electricity exists through many home made experiments. I'm talking about the science like String theory, quantum mechanics, cosmology. These things I cannot find out the truth for myself because I either don't have the resources, or it would take me many years (perhaps lifetime) of study to really understand all the details and implications. As I mentioned before, truth is not a complex maze, it is easily accessible.

No one is asking you to have "faith" in scientists.

No one? What about all those physics books I read that are telling me the 'truth' about the world around me? what about the the newspapers, magazines, and television telling me of the latest theory? Yea of course they are not saying "believe this or you're an idiot" but they expect you to believe them. How can you prove to yourself science is giving you the right answer? You have to take what they say on faith because you can't prove it yourself without the appropriate resources and time. Try this sometime: prove to yourself that the Big Bang really happened.  :sun:

On the subject...where, in ANY of my posts, did I say that anyone should "believe" anything or do something as silly as have FAITH IN SCIENCE??!?!?!

Absolutely no where, I only responded to you because you made a lengthy post about how cool string theory can be and touched on Einstein's relativity among other things.

We really don't care what you think, so think what you want  :smirk:

There is a kind of sick desperation in your reply.

I apologize as well, for over-reacting to your post!

I do understand where you are coming from. All I can suggest is that you don't fall into the habbit of holding faith in science.

There is much to be said for the "thought experiment" that Einstein was so fond of. You may need a particle accelerator to actually have "proof" in something...but there is no reason why you cannot think something through in your own mind to a logical conclusion.

Again, the object of the game is not to come to an "end" where you have some final Truth...the object is to continually update your theories with any data you can get your hands on!

chodamonkey: "No one? What about all those physics books I read that are telling me the 'truth' about the world around me?"

hold an apple in the air, let go, if it drops to the ground, then maybe you should reflect on the nature of science.

If you are able to keep it suspended in mid-air with your mushroom-fueled mind power, well then...Fly to the moon and declare yourself king.

it would wise if you actually read my posts before replying...(taken from my last post above) I'm not talking about the science that ANYONE can do: for example you can prove to yourself that electricity exists through many home made experiments. I'm talking about the science like String theory, quantum mechanics, cosmology. When we get into these territories, science seems to be treading into fairy tale / outlandish story waters. Of course, just because it's wierd doesn't mean it didn't happen or that it's not true, but I approach these 'scientific' ideas the same way a scientist would approach psychadelic experiences: skeptically and with a grain of salt.
