Just got a bunch of rice, and relizied its short grain, not long grain! Whats the difference? Will short grain work? Once its ground to flour its all the same, isnt it?

as far as mushrooms can tell, brown rice is brown rice. there are a few prepackaged types that have some kind of fungus inhibitor on them, and don't work at all, not even mold grows on it! most of the time however rice is rice. i test new types by cooking up a jar and leaving it loose lided on a shelf to see if in a few weeks it gets moldy. usually not needed.
if you buy product labled organic in the US then it will work.

short grain rice has a higher starch content than long grain which could result in a large clumpy mass. Watch the water content when preparing substrate.

Thx for the info!
Soochi- What exctally do you mean by "clumpy mess"? Im gonna add the rice flour to wet vermiculite to prepare my substrate- so are you saying it may get too clumpy and not have enough air for mycilium to grow?

commie YES. - i'm not busting your balls but go and check out the PF tek again. put the rice flour in a bowl w/ the verm and mix, and then add the water. also don't try to mix all the ingriedients for 10 jars at the same time. do a few jars at a time, this will ensure an even consistent mix. good luck !

Ok, so the PF tek DOES say to add the water last.....i dont know where i got the idea to add the flour last....though im not sure how much of a difference the order makes.
Also the PF tek says nothing of long grain or short grain, so im gonna go prepare my substrate right now using short grain.
Thx again for all the help guys!

add the flour LAST...this is very important, adding the flour after you mix the water and verm ensures that the flour coats the moist verm completly.if you do it the other way around then you will end up with clumpy masses of flour in the verm. remember, not everything in the old pf tek is gospel. if you read thru it also recommends packing the substrate tightly into the jars and everyone knows that this is not the case. you can try bothways if you like but will soon see that mixing the flour last gives a much better consistancy than mixing it first.

WTFE - i have to say that i definitely disagree, adding flour to already wet verm just makes it concentrate wherever it falls first, mixing the verm and the brf well and then slowly adding water while mixing has always worked. either way, just be sure to mix it well. if you get " clumpy masses of flour " you are obviously not doing something right - I'm pretty sure PF had a pretty good grasp on home cultivation for the everyday schmo other wise most of us would not be here now. as i said - WTFE

Because short grain is clumpy im gonna try to sprinkle it on already wet verm. Im sure i can get it evenly distributed. Also last time i just threw the shit in any order and mixed it up! haha
Thx for all the different ideas!
