Bulk Grain Strainer * 2
    #22030493 - 08/01/15 08:32 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Required materials:

- 5 Gallon bucket
- window screen
- shoelace or small rope
- small sturby object, e.g. screwdriver, butter knife

Drape your window screen over your 5 gallon that has your grains soaking in it. I've got some lovely whole oats here.

smooth out the screen until its relatively flat

tie a simple knot in your shoelace that will form a loop close to the size of the diameter of your bucket.

slip it over the screen and the lip of the bucket

feed your random object through the shoelace

give it a few twists until its nice and tight

drain your grains! I've saving my water to make some agar plates and hydrate some coir. just make sure your object is twisted tight! never rely on what you think is a tightly tied knot alone. this tourniquet style fastening will keep it on pretty much no matter what!

it makes rinsing your grains as well as saturating them and saving their grain water very easy!

Way easier than what I have been doing (using a hand strainer over each jar)...Instead of doing them one jar at a time, I can do them all.
That part about using something to twist the string:billymaythumbup:

I just drill several 1/8th inch holes in the bottom of a five gallon bucket and set it inside of another un tampered five gallon bucket. When you lift the inner bucket out the water will drain into the outer bucket. Easy peasy.

modifying your 5gallon to add drainage holes limits its uses, though. can't really hydrate subs or soak grains in a bucket that constantly drains. I go by the Alton Brown theory that no tool in our repertoire should have only one use.

munch, in this illustration how many quart grain jars worth of grain are you straining? trying to gauge volume. maybe a max out point for how much grain you would want to do in one sitting using this method.

I'm guessing most people could handle doing that all day if they needed to. Be the judge of your own work ethic. Button farms would hire some guy to do that 8 hours straight with purpose built spawn straining vessels.

I the multiple purpose idea

17. I'd say the bucket was a good 3/4 full too. not much more room left - could be sloppy with a totally full bucket. maybe a max or 20 or so qt jars.

only buy the ziploc brand. the knock-offs have shitty threads that make the lids shoot off if you try to shake them at all.

Sounds good. I have a bunch of SFDs I'm going to use as filters.
If I have some extra do you want them?

They make a small brute trash can. It's got industrial quality handles. Brewing stores sell large bags for straining grain already

did I mention the screen itself makes it really easy to load grains? no need to worry about spillage, so you can just use your hands and it goes pretty quick

looked up some of those. they are a bit cheaper than buying a screen window panel (I found mine on the side of the road as part of a discarded screen door). the only advantage I can see that a flat screen has would be the ability to lay it out flat and put a fan on it to help dry them out (as shown). I've dried them in the sink using a spatula, but I did this fan method last night because it such a large batch and I didn't want to sit there and constantly agitate a full sink of grains. I laid some newspaper down underneath it but I didn't have much. they still came out perfectly dry yet saturated.

If you're doing oats you can get away with a half assed strain. Boil 30m strain but load and LC long before they would pass the TP test.
