Community Wood-Chip Lots! Experiences?

So recently I have come to realize that right next to my house there is a massive wood-chip lot that clearly states that I may rape and pillage all that I want! It is absolutely incredible. Being very knowledgeable in the different types of trees/etc I am not worried about getting walnut or other allelopathic types of woodchips. Luckily it seems that there are mostly small individual piles of different types of trees that are chipped, making it easy to pick and choose what I like.
My question is regarding the use of wood chips for gourmet and medicinal mushrooms. Such as which mushrooms do best on only wood chips and also any experience on blends etc. Being a keep recycler/upcycler I try not to use items that I feel really don't make much of a difference in yield that I don't need to go out of my to make silly purchases. A good example is that I prefer to grow on 100% reused material (coffee/brewery grains/paper/cardboard/etc.) rather then buy some bran or sawdust to mix in when the real difference it will make is marginal and not really a environmentally sound decision in the end.
Anywho... Hopefully some people will chime in. I may or may not be close to the lands of the great Canadian Crack - Mayor Ford lol.
... for what it matter.

Cedar and pine variants are what you really need to stay away from. They love any type of hardwood. Bark can also be used but only 20-25% tops.
Generally speaking wood piles are safe most people don't have trees in the pine family at their house. RR has used aged pine wood as a substitute in his spawn but the ratio for that is low.
Different hardwoods have different growing speeds. Oak tends to be the slowest. Just grab a bunch from different piles and you should be fine.

Thanks for your input vatman,
As I mentioned I know too much about trees and wood that could ever be considered healthly . Just an FYI I have grown with 100% bark mulch with excellent results. I would say that for some strains they are an great substrate. That is the issue. Some strains work and some strains don't. So far oysters and reishi seem to be fine for both softwood bark and hardwood.
Keep the experiences coming people!
There are community woodchip piles in every city. This is something we should really be having more discussion about!

Its funny you mentioned that stevo. I was considering it. I decided not to because if for some reason it spreads I'm going to have a problem on my hands. An option is to take chips and make a pile away from the lot and inoculate it. I may have to give that a shot. I recently switched from wbs to Hard red winter wheat and I'm having much better results. Can't wait to give it a shot.

well because they are all linked via the ground and a shallow layer or chips. The piles are far from dry and when they are put into a pile the centre stays moist and warm in a state of decomposition. I just don't want to risk consuming a resource that isn't solely mine. Its funny you mention other mushrooms because I stumbled onto a massive puffball on top of the largest pile. Never seen one that big - ever...

Hey stevo.
Funny you mention that because I recently dug into a nice fresh pile and it was so nice and ropey on the inside... made me wonder what it was. I left the pile to come back and see what is feasting on it. I have actually used a pile that was in the beginning stages of colonization by some sort of fungus. I brought it home to use as mulch and it dried out on the surface of my garden for a couple months. Randomly I decided to fill a tub with some for blue oysters. I just soaked for a couple days and then drained till the surface was dry and it worked out well. Just spread it out and let it dry. should be ok bud.
