Ammonia Smell on Lion's Mane Wheat Berries

I did a search on this and found some posts about this topic, but no one ever posted how it turned out. Here's the scoop:
I had a couple 1 lb bags of pre-sterilized rye berries from Out-grow that I inoculated with lion's mane LC from Sporeworks. They sat for like over a month and did very, very little. There was some kind of mycelial looking growth in one and the other just kind of looked dry. So I decided what the hell. I made up a bag using fuel pellets and threw both bags of berries in there. I figured it only cost me about a buck, so why not. The thing is, when I opened one of the bags of berries I got a pretty good whiff of ammonia smell. As far as I can tell by my searching the forums, this is probably some type of bacterial contamination. Since no one else posted results of whether or not their grow made it after having a similar experience, I will let everyone know how it goes for future reference.

If it smells like ammonia, it's safe to assume that there is some serious contam going on in there, toss it!

I've never done it with lions mane, but with cubes it went something like this:

Mad Season said: Oh dear lord no. I'll get a quote from when I had this debate awhile back. There's a big difference between fully colonized and cleanly colonized.

Mad Season said: Well there's a difference between colonized and cleanly colonized.
This is colonized:
Lots of members have noticed cobweb and trich from jars that look like this or better. Wet spots are bacteria. Not wet grains or wet spots. To colonize cleanly is the hardest. I had to change my pc times to 2 hours to reduce it.
This is (ALMOST) cleanly colonized, that's how hard it is to have it completely clean. This isn't even completely clean:

This is completely clean spawn:

Anyone who's done this for awhile will testify this is the hardest part of the hobby and is what will dictate the success or failure of bulk.
All those jars had a mushroomy smell. A miniscule amount of bacteria will get overpowered by the mushroom musk. Especially if it is covering the surface

Mad Season said: They didn't have wet grains stuck to the jar side. It was bacteria. A properly pasteurized bulk substrate has beneficial microbes that fight bacteria off. In fact if mycelium takes the upper hand like the jars in those pics, more often than not it won't be a problem. However it will ruin pinsets, slow down colonization rates, and EXTREMELY increase chances of other contaminations like trich or cobweb.
All those jars were used to make their own separate trays. The ones that were clean easily pumped out twice as much weight.
Dirty spawn:

Clean spawn:

To sum up. If it has lots of bacteria, you'll have a very good chance of a different contamination you'd never want. And if you do fruit it out, you'll have diminished yields. For me at this point I don't do anything bacterial. Not worth it. If you're starting out or doing this for shits and giggles, go for it. I obviously did and those are my results

Good info! I'm just trying it to see what happens. I'm just a hobbiest, so I won't be out much. I figure my sacrifice will be good info for other people in a similar situation.
