D.A.R.E. accidentally publishes pro-legalization op-ed

Who the hell runs the D.A.R.E. website? You'll remember three months ago when they accidentally posted a satirical story about 21 people dying from marijuana before removing it once they realized they had made an embarrassing mistake. Well now they accidentally posted a pro-legalization op-ed article on their site before quickly yanking it down. Luckily New York Magazine, among others, took screen shots of it while it was still online. This is great.
Quote:
D.A.R.E. Published an Op-ed Calling for Marijuana Legalization [Updated]
By Claire Landsbaum
The war on drugs is over, and weed won? D.A.R.E., the organization designed to plant a deep-seated fear of drugs in the minds of every late-20th-century middle schooler, published an op-ed calling for marijuana legalization (which they now say was published by mistake, see the update at the bottom of this post).
Written by former deputy sheriff Carlis McDerment in response to a letter in the Columbus Dispatch, the op-ed explains that it's impossible for law enforcement to control the sale of marijuana to minors. "People like me, and other advocates of marijuana legalization, are not totally blind to the harms that drugs pose to children," McDerment writes. "We just happen to know that legalizing and regulating marijuana will actually make everyone safer."
He continues:
Anyone who suggests we outlaw everything dangerous to children would also have to ban stairs, Tylenol, bleach, forks and outlet sockets and definitely alcohol. Those things harm children every day, but anyone championing that we ban them would be laughed at.
I support legalization precisely because I want to reduce youths’ drug use. Drug dealers don’t care about a customer’s age. The answer isn’t prohibition and incarceration; the answer is regulation and education.
For a program that pioneered the questionable "just say no" policy, this is a breakthrough.
Update (7/31): D.A.R.E. appears to have removed the op-ed from its website. Here is the screenshot of the original post:
Update (8/1): Daily Intelligencer reached out to D.A.R.E. for comment, and Director Ronald J. Brogan responded:
The article you wrote about was mistakenly posted on our website by a service we use. We have not changed our stance of being opposed to the legalization of marijuana.

Any halfway intelligent kid can see through D.A.R.E. propaganda. Cops know nothing about health science so they just resort to obvious bullshit scare tactics. Police have no place in educating kids about drugs or combating drug abuse. Both should be left to doctors and the medical community.

It's the first "mistake" they have ever admitted to, yet it's the only thing they've done right

What a lame excuse. It's not that we only read the headline of the articles we post. This mysterious service must have accidentally posted the wrong article.

I remember the dare program inspiring me to do drugs in the first place. They described the effect and the rest of the info was ridiculous so I basically just heard "When you take lsd you see things and get high and feel good. The "drunk goggles also inspired me getting drunk.

Yes this. I really think cigarettes are worse for you in the long run than any other common recreational drug besides meth or xanax if you have an addictive personality. Smoking kills so many people. I lost 3 family members in the past year all from smoking ciggarettes.
