Spore harvest!!
    #2202727 - 12/26/03 09:21 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

So I should be taking  spore prints from the first mushrooms to appear on my casing if I want to refine the LIPA strain over time right?????

Just keep picking the best?????
biggest , quickest shrooms on the scence? :smirk:

and when cloning I guess would be better, but for now syringes should be made of my best spores and so on and so on???

harvest after harvest if I really like LIPA(which I do) I could make the fruitys bigger or quicker throgh selection yes?????

this is so trippy! :mushroom2:

I have more pins then I can count by the way, and suprise my incubated casing looks better then the straight to fruiting chamber  casing , but they both look great.
I would need a graph layed over these pins to cont them!!!!, and no aborts that I can see so far!!
LIPA WBS and coir !!!!!
oh my!!!!!!!!!!
(good prints are made on tin foil yes?)
My mushroom book says paper , but I want to use foil as I hear it is better, beside I am  not trying to figure out which spores these are! :smirk:

I'm not posotive but i think the only way to continue getting mushrooms like your very first or your biggest mushroom to come up is to clone it. I think that by taking the biggest cap to make a spore print of just gives you a big spore print....I could be wrong but i'm tired and a little high. Glad everything is workin for ya!!

your right, taking a print from the biggest shroom will only give you a bigger print not the specfic traits of that mushroom, when the spores germinate they produce abunch of substrains and you won't have an isolate, you would have to clone and keep transfering substrains into new dishes until you got an isolate

Basically, when you take a spore print, you are creating genetic diversity within that strain. If you get a great pinset off a casing and take prints, it will not guarantee that you get the exact same characteristics as you did off that casing. Taking prints is good though for when you have a good strain and you want to preserve the genetics. Clones eventually will degenerate over time and prints are taken to start anew and make new clones.

If you clone from a fruitbody, you have an isolate. It doesn't get any more isolated than that.

A clone is a substrain - if you clone properly, you have an isolate already. This may sector and require further transfers to balance the mycelial characteristics out, but it is inherantly the same substrain as the original mushroom.
Secondly, even cloning does not actually guarantee that the fruiting of this clone will resemble the original mushroom in anyway - it is more likely, but the clone will still contain a mixture of phenotype genetics that could express in a myriad of ways - slight variations in substrate constistencies or differing fruiting conditions would be more likely to result in the fruiting of a different phenotype expression.

What exactly is the procedure of cloning a mushroom? It sounds interesting, I would like to try it sometime. Peace.
