Aust Gov inquiry on personal choice including Cannabis
    #22027011 - 08/01/15 04:15 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Edit: From now until 18 September 2015 - see next post for more specific dates), Australians (and everyone else apparently) can make submissions to An inquiry into measures introduced to restrict personal choice 'for the individual's own good'.

Full terms of reference can be found here: http://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Senate/Economics/Personal_choice/Terms_of_Reference

The Senate Economics References Committee wants to know what Australians think about:

Quote:

The economic and social impact of legislation, policies or Commonwealth guidelines, with particular reference to:
c.the sale and use of marijuana and associated products, including any impact on the health, enjoyment and finances of users and non-users;
and
f.any other measures introduced to restrict personal choice 'for the individual‘s own good‘.

#C obviously covers recreational use, but maybe we could mention medicinal use too – not sure if we can stretch it to cover research, but it might be worth a try. Either way, there's plenty to talk about.

#F could allow a broader discussion of restrictions on other substances (or sacraments, if that's how you view such things), or indeed anything else where you disagree with government interference.

I'm trying to cobble together a decent submission, and am encouraging others to do so as well. At the moment the submissions are dominated by cyclists who don't want to wear helmets - which is fine if that's your thing - but I'd hate to have these senators think that's the only liberty Australians are interested in.

Update:
The committee has extended the closing date for submissions to 18 September 2015.

However, the committee will accept submissions received after that date where they address specific inquiry terms of reference in accordance with the committee work plan as follows:

5 October 2015
Bicycle helmet laws (term d)

4 November 2015
Sale and service of alcohol (term b  )

30 November 2015
Sale and use of marijuana and associated products (term c)

4 January 2016
Sale and use of tobacco and nicotine and e-cigarettes (term a)

1 February 2016
Classification of publications, films and computer games (term e)

1 March 2016
Any other measures introduced to restrict personal choice (term f)

So if anyone, including those of us who went to the effort of getting their submissions in on time, has anything to add, there is plenty of opportunity to do so.

The committee appears to be accepting submissions from outside Australia - so if anyone else here wants to share their views in this, the can do so.

I'd like to contribute but have no fucking idea what I'm doing or what to include in a submission. I made a MyParliament account but that's as far as I got.

Also, why wouldn't you want to wear a bike helmet?

Hi jsncrs
In the must general sense, the advice from the general webpage on making submissions to inquiries is pretty good:

1.A submission may be as short or as long as you like. It may contain facts, opinions, arguments or recommendations. It may cover all the points in the terms of reference or only some of them, depending on what interests you. Supporting documents may be attached.

2.There is no prescribed format. However, to make submissions most useful we suggest: •the terms of reference of the inquiry can be a good guide to structuring a submission;

Don't stress about not knowing what you are doing. Having read some of the other submissions, I'm pretty sure yours would not be anywhere near the most poorly written, or most unhinged.

Keep it simple and try to back up any factual claims with solid sources or statistics. That said, if you want to address this in way that is less about statistics and more about values and philosophy, I think that's fine too. I have no dear what works, so I did some of both.

I should also add that if your submission is accepted it is protected by parliamentary privilege - meaning that it can't be used against you:

Quote:

It is an offence for anyone to try to stop you from making a submission by threats or intimidation. It is an offence for anyone to harass you or discriminate against you because you have made a submission. The content of the submission is also protected but only after the committee has accepted it. This means that what you say in the submission, once the committee has accepted it, cannot be used in court against you or anyone else.

(From: http://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Senate/How_to_make_a_submission )

Also, if you are worried that what you want to say isn't clever or polished enough, take a look at what the committee has accepted: http://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Senate/Economics/Personal_choice/Submissions

Long overdue follow-up: Some of the people who made submissions to this ended up talking about legalising recreational mj to a couple of Senators.
