The Polar Bear Challenge...would you accept it?

a footbal field. on one end, a caged injured polar bear cub. on the other a caged angry mother bear. The Challenge: for a cool, tax free million, you must stand next to the caged cub, and face down the charging mother bear armed with a S&W 500 Magnum. that gives you five rounds.

Ya I'm confident enough in my shooting capabilities to take that risk. By no means do I think I would win 100% but in my opinion it is worth it haha

Nah I don't think my capabilities could match up to a charging bear. It's a big gun, but it's also a big animal. It is far from a guaranteed kill just because you shoot it. Bullets would have to be extremely well placed.

I just watched a video on that gun and Idk anymore.. lol it has so much recoil I don't think you could get more then one accurate shot off anyway but one shot would kill the bear if you're good enough.

You might survive it with the baby bear, but you wouldn't with momma bear. Of course, it would be a memorable suicide, if that's what you had in mind.

a S&W 500 mag is a bad boy
if you put 5 bullets into a polar bear with that, even as massive as polar bears are, he'd be in bad shape

Bad shape, yes. But bad enough that you could walk away from the encounter? I have serious doubts.

for a million, fuck yeah
shoot mama, even if she fucks me up a bit...so be it I got a fucking million I can get surgery or whatever, and probably some sweet pain meds.
so then I take the cub and sell that little niglet to the highest bidder, I mean some rich douche will be bound to make it rain for a freakin polar bear cub
how I see it, I am still coming out on top.

In this documentary a man takes down a polar bear with a pistol, so I'm sure with a bigger gun you would be just fine.

And you also have 100 yards worth of football field to work with.
Now a polar bear at full speed can easily track down an average human at full speed -- but a polar bear with 5 bullets in it from a Smith & Wesson 500 mag?

From the one time I shot an S&W 500 mag (4" barrel), I'd say that follow up shots would be very difficult to land accurately compared to a .44 mag or special due to the recoil in the situation. I would not prefer to face a charging bear with an S&W 500. I'd rather have a smaller, more manageable caliber. Withhout lots of practise or being a beast, that S&W 500 will likely offer little advantage after the first shot in such an instance.
Unless it only takes one shot.
Actually 100 yards is a pretty decent distance for this scenario. If you're a good shot with large caliber handguns it could come out in your favor easily enough.
Edit: No, I wouldn't do it because I don't like seeing enraged polar bears: not worth the money.

Ya that's my thing is there's no way to get those 5 bullets to land accurately. I've been on a black bear hunt with my brother and he took his with a 7mm 08. And it went down immediately but that's nowhere near the size of an adult polar bear and it wasn't kissed off.

Black bears are one thing, and sometimes even a joke in some areas (central florida), but a polar bear will fuck you up son.
Yeah that ridiculous recoil is hard to manage, but plenty of folks hunt large, dangerous game with big handguns without incident. It's certainly doable if not risky, but defense situations are often a little different.

You'd have to be a pretty damn good shot to shoot a charging bear (with anything more than a superficial wound I mean) with a pistol even at a distance of 15-25 yards. That bear would be coming straight for you which would make you nervous and impede accuracy. 15 yards is about where I'd draw the line where if I hadn't inflicted critical wounds by that point, I might as well turn the gun on myself and spare myself the agony of being ripped apart.
I think honestly if you took a group of just random people and all had them play out this scenario only a handful would have the nessecary skill to take the bear down before it could reach them, and you'd have a few more who got lucky shots. I think the majority would be mauled. That's how I see things going down. I am not lucky and I know I lack the skill to hit a fast moving target in critical areas from a distance that would be safe.
Unless you're a true marksman, you are not hitting anything critical without some level of luck beyond 30 or 40 yards with a pistol. At the 80 or 90 yard line, you're just wasting your ammo. So basically you have to just sit there and let this bear charge in until it's close enough to be effective.
That's my take on the scenario. Based on my experience with firearms (ranging from .22 pistols to m1903's and Garand M1's) and tying it in with common knowledge.

I am a man of peace. For the baby bear, I would smuggle a piece of fruit with a little ketamine in it and wait for it to pass out. For mom. I would sooth her with my incredible powers of seduction, and eventually seduce her into having insane man-bear sex with me. Ah yes, if that were to occur, the mountains would truly shake and tremble!
