PLEASE HELP!!!!
    #22025262 - 07/31/15 05:18 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Hello Mycology Experts,

I have posted before. I am from Maine and have been searching my local area for two years spore collecting. I decided to buy spores; evidently called Mexican Penis "A?" (website called them "New Moon") and a growing kit. I need DESPERATELY to show some pics to you all and ask some questions. Before you wonder, yes I tried to learn all I could; I am a middle aged woman who thought I did all my research - getting quite a bit of wonderful knowledge from all you folks here on so much of what I did.

I am stunned at what is happening. I dunked (refrigerating); and then rolled this past Sunday. With six cakes; and with the new anxiety of a parent; I watched in wonder as one cake colonized at alarming rates. I know not what to do with this one cake - well what is growing; as they are so large, the tip of one is hitting the ceiling of my growing chamber. Please take a look at pics; let me know if you need more pics. Literally in one half a day; the stems of three of these babies grew over an inch. Maybe more. Help!! Do I pic them? Do a second flush of this one cake while the others catch up? Wait a while? The gills broke open on the one that hit the top just this morning and afternoon growing. I am desperate for some hints here so that I do not spoil them. I am hoping to enjoy them. I am hoping that they are indeed a kind enjoyable~~~!!!! Please take a look - any information is great. I read all of your posts; as many as I could when I began this entire growth process. I have misted the inside of the growing chamber with fresh water twice; it is very humid in there. The rate they are growing...I am blown away. Help; Anyone!!!! They have been colonizing only five days. Today being only half of day five~!!!!

Well... For one, you need more fresh air exchange (fae). Those long stems mean that they are being deprived of oxygen.
Your tub should have holes in it for the fae. It's like 1/4 inch holes, 2 inches apart, in a grid like pattern. Check out the sgfc link in my signature.
I think you have your terms mixed up? A little confused by this post but if you mean that your mushies grew in 5 days, that would make a bit more sense.
I'm not familiar with your variety but generally you wait until the veil underneath the cap begins to open, then you harvest.

Ya that big one is a mutant. I'd pick it.

Grow kit... I understand now  :shakefist:

Geez, thank you. Okay, I am searching around the web for your terms. I guess what I thought was good research wasn't. I am looking for the term vert. I don't have a tool to drill any holes; can I punch some through with a screwdriver and a hammer to the top of the tupperware that I cover it with (growing kit from Midwestern). Can I refrigerate the big one to keep it fresh until the others catch up. Yes, I mean it grew in five days. The big ones you are looking at were already growing in the jar before I took the cakes out of the jar. I truly tried to look up so many directions; getting so many different research materials and answers mostly here on this site. I have never done this. I thought ... well I don't know what I thought was going to happen. I suppose I thought all along maybe nothing would until I saw them growing inside the jars. Sorry if I am getting terminology mixed up; I am excited - and confused - and worried. Don't want to ruin this. As with anything, you learn through your mistakes and when you don't know - ask! I am very humble. Thank you for all who are answering. I am refreshing every five minutes or so for answers. Hoping I haven't already ruined them.

Vert as in verticillium. Hair lip caps is a sign of it. Brown shit on the stem, and grey shit you can rub off the cap with a qtip too. Thrives in low fae environments.

its verticillium fungicola and its a white mold.
it was a nuisance to me for many months.
found out it was riding on the myc, but would not show itself until a week+ after full colonization of plate.
top left is vert only
top right is vert + cube mycelium after plate consolidated for a week or two
bottom plate is healthy cube mycelium after 2 week consolidation.

note the intertwined plate has a 3d fuzz look to it.  starts in the middle, and works its way out

OP look up a shotgun fruiting chamber tek. Those are in a bad environment and are screaming for fae. Put them in a proper fruiting chamber. Fanning isn't a replacement for fae. Holes strategically placed are what gives fae.

you can buy a cheap drill and a 3$ drill bit, you need holes on all 6 sides especially the bottom. And don't put it in a fridge, lay it out with a fan blowing on it if you don't have a dehydrator. You want them dry if you don't want to eat them right away, they will rot pretty quick. You don't want food poisoning or something.

Thank You - any info appreciated [Re: enchantedforest]
    #22025432 - 07/31/15 05:55 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I took a look at what the holes should look like. Seems like I would have to remove everything to get the proper holes in. Wouldn't that cause problems? What to do now...?

Thank you all. Your combined wisdom is astonishing. I found out what vert means; I will pick it. I wanted them fresh; after much reading, it seemed that eating them fresh was better than drying them out. If it is a vert, from what I read, it can be eaten. Since these are also so large; I wonder on the potency. I can't get a clear answer. There is so much data out there. Not even sure on the type since I did procure it online. From what I know; it is Mexican P.E. I have never in my life tried shrooms. Ever. It has been a bucket list dream.

http://www.shroomery.org/6257/Magic-Mushroom-Dosage-Calculator  Dosage calculator with trip levels. Mushrooms are around 90 percent water so a fresh dose time a dry dose by 10. ( just a ballpark figure) with multi spore potency varies from mushroom to mushroom.

It'll cause less problems than if you leave it in there like that.  They'll probably like the fresh air of being outside the chamber.  Just keep misting them if they look dry while you work on the tub.

On a budget like that I'd probably stop worrying about growing mushrooms but.. if you want a practical answer, you can get something long and metal hot enough to melt holes in the plastic.  It'll be ugly as hell though.

You're welcome! Do you know anyone who would loan you a drill? If not it would be a major pain but you could heat something up and use it to melt holes through, be sure not to push too hard and crack the plastic.

Often times people overlook hair lip caps as mutants. I'm not saying every hair lip is vert or a mutant. Just that it is a suspect of it. The fact it also had no holes in the chamber (very little fae) makes me think it's more than just a coincidence it's like that.

Amazing! And just more (probably annoying) questions [Re: NDStepp84]
    #22025534 - 07/31/15 06:17 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

That is an amazing way of calculation. With shrooms having such large stems - and eaten fresh; one truly needs a measuring device. Again with the poverty question... since I thought these might take weeks to grow, I also thought I would have the $ to support whatever might be needed at the time of growth. Because I do not - any tips out there for a "poor man's" recipe for storing, or drying....I will do my homework of course. I didn't think it would be an issue. I haven't read anything to suggest that they can grow as fast as five days. Now I understand about the air issue.

Also, I looked around. I have a big metal pot I could transfer them too, not so much perlite left. Not so much money. I saw a post NOT to do this. It also has no way of air venting. Can I leave the cover vented as a remedy? I just had no idea... this strain grows so fast. I have one cake that isn't growing any pins at all. I suppose this one is damaged. I did stab myself the first time inoculating one of them. In a panic, I injected it anyway. This may be the one. You truly learn from stupidity.

For the post above; my five dollars is just a temp problem, my ABS system in my car got repaired yesterday. Just so you know. I didn't go into this without wanting to put every effort into it. And taking care of life needs first. I want to thank you for the posts about the holes; what the chamber should be like. Buying a growing kit - being new; reading the "how to's" online; you think that all you need is there for you. Clearly it isn't. Which is why I think all of you are so incredibly kind and helpful. Thank you for helping this old hippie chick. Any and all answers, critical or otherwise are appreciated. I am new; lets face it; anyone new needs answers. This is truly a science. Thank you most humbly.

:ducklol:  The main pinning trigger is water evaporating off your cakes/FAE. They can't do this very well if they are sealed up in an air tight tub

Well, best bet is borrow a drill or melt the holes, but with any method of putting holes, you want to brace the plastic against something so it doesn't crack.  Definitely don't bang a nail into it like that one guy said.

I would be too  it still has a chance it has a small amount. Increasing the fae would keep it at bay and make those fruits look way nicer regardless so it doesn't matter too much. I'd just not want to use that as a clone or take any spores.

Leaving cover slightly opened? [Re: NDStepp84]
    #22025649 - 07/31/15 06:42 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Is it at all possible to leave that air tight cover open a bit? Perhaps with a small fan pointed at the chamber?

Most probably annoying question #2: Can I take pick that large shroom off and perhaps the one curling under it (should I?) and place them in a zip lock bag to stay fresh in the refrigerator? I would like to try them fresh yet know they rot quick.

I realize it needs air with actual holes. I need to leave for work overnight in just a bit. What would all of you kind enough to follow this thread tell this humble hippie chick (and yes; we rock - some of us literally.)

Me and my Ibanez are the best of pals. Grew up in a band, literally. Thank you for saying so~!

When do you plan on consuming them?

Tomorrow if I can and should to eat them fresh (I heard to eat them fresh is more potent - though those stems; wow are they huge)... Geez I am not sure how many to eat; I have no scale. Just a digital human one... I planned to buy one; but again the ABS system went on my car. Do I have enough to try tomorrow? I keep researching and researching... I just read something about drying them in a capri sun pouch. I would be late for work, but I don't want to ruin this entire batch. I actually spent a lot of money on the spores and the growing kit. Never knowing I needed a dehydrator; a lot of things actually. Knowledge is a powerful tool. Experience even more so....

I prefer dry myself, they don't taste as bad and a lot less matter to eat. They will dry  pretty well sitting out with a fan on them. No way of knowing without a scale, if you got them cracker dry and ground them up into powder with a coffee bean grinder you could guesstimate by filling gel caps. A regular size gel cap would be around 1/2 a gram stuffed full. But still with mushrooms you need to pick up a scale when you get some extra cash. I found mine on eBay for like 17 bucks, best ones I have ever owned.

If you absolutely have to store fresh mushrooms, a paper bag in the fridge is far better than plastic unless you want them to turn black and mushy.

That's just a mutant, it doesn't even look like proper rosecomb.  Look up verticillium in the search engine.

Let's see if I can knock out a few things. OP I don't own a drill either, every hole I've made was by a trusty nail on the stove or a heated scalpel to cut holes in plastic.

There's no issues with moving your cakes and perlite out of the tub for a while when your melting the holes, just make sure they don't dry out.

If you want them dry you can put them in an enclosed space with a fanning running directly on them for 1-3 days and them put them into a container with moisture absorber.

If you want them fresh they keep for a few days in the fridge in either a plastic bag with paper towels in it or in a paper bag.

And don't worry too much about this vert talk, I doubt it will affect you on a cake or two.

There isn't any vert that I can see, just FAE issues.

Last question - today being THE day [Re: jbaby007]
    #22027120 - 08/01/15 06:05 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Thank you first to all who replied.

I took a jigsaw to my growth chamber last night and got some holes in there. This morning, the stems on that first cake are just huge still... maybe four inches or better.

Like I have mentioned, its been a bucket list dream to try shrooms at some point in this lifetime. I have waited 45 years. This morning - soon; I would like to snip off those huge stemmed "rosecombs?" and eat them. Fresh. Before I lose them forever.

I looked up so much about Mexican PE - potency, etc. I found a thread someone wrote regarding having no scale and the writer said that a nickle is 5 grams. By the calculator provided; for a level 2, I would need to ingest 12 grams. Fresh that is.

My last question before I go gently into my good"day" is this: in the photo of the crazy growing shrooms on that one cake and the now larger pins (I believe they are called - they are immature, I know this) - are they safe to eat? Would any of you eat them? That would be a better answer.

Thank you to all of you very lovely, knowledgeable, peace-loving; soul searching folks!!

rosecomb is just the name of the cap mutation...  You can eat anything that looks like a mushroom, mature or not.

The result of advice and a truly spiritual and amazing expericence~! [Re: Inocuole]
    #22080100 - 08/12/15 06:34 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Thank you for all the advice. I put air holes in my chamber - I couldn't figure out how for awhile. I sat with it and because I do crafts; I decided to try my small wood burner to create holes in the plastic chamber. It was very neat; precise; and created great holes just as you told me. The caps grew perfect after that; they were perfect. With two neighbors; I had the most amazing experience outside for about five hours - maybe more next to what I call my enchanted forest (it is a forest beside my house with all manner of plant life; deciduous and coniferous trees; edible berries by the hundreds in there - pine needle pathes - old growth trees). The clouds; everything was incredible. It was as if I was on another plane of existence. I sketch. So I thought I would share both what my mushies looked like after the advice for air and how to dry them; etc. And then my sketch during a ...well having no real experience to define absolutely - a high level experience for sure! For hours. Here are two photos. I was hoping to show it to some great folks here who helped tremendously!!! I want to thank you! My second flush is going great as well!!!! I would like to try it again from scratch; no "growing kit." I have to do a lot of research to make sure I do it right and of course; I love to hunt for them. There are six species in Maine so I hope if a Mainer reads this; they will know to look!!! Thank you everyone! The first pic is to show you what the caps and such looked like after growing with the help of the advice for air flow; holes (etc.) and thank you so much for all of that!! And misting and the light advice as well - as a newbie grower. The second pic is what occurred during a five hour hilariously funny experience eating nine dried (taking drying advice here) with some neighbors. I felt like my hand was guided - some very strange and wonderful feelings while sketching. Ignore the magnets; I gave the drawing to the neighbor who partook with me and made me laugh so beautifully hard! Thanks all.

Have you too had a quasi-spiritual; hilarious; connected to everything around you sort of experience? And enlightening? I did. Finally - age 45; everything was just another beautiful reality. Surely we have several realities all around us all the time. We just need to be able to tune in......

Amazing - This breakdown of how to cultivate is exactly what I was needing and looking for!! Perfect; thank you so very much! I had my experience Sunday and relational; I can tell you that this definition is the perfect description of how I feel:  "Origin & History of Enlightenment:" "to remove the dimness or blindness (usually figurative) from one's eyes or heart." It is a beautiful world if you decide to see it, hear it, touch  it, smell it, taste it,....and FEEL it.

Enchantedforest...I always feel like I'm seeing things from a totally new perspective after a good trip...It recharges my soul... I'm also an artist and a part time writer...whenever I feel stuck (in my writing, drawing, or just life in general) ...I take a little trip and I feel like my senses and powers of observation amplify and awaken.
I'm glad to hear you are enjoying cultivating... I'm still new, but if you have any questions, I'm always happy to help...I started by reading a ton of info...Find a user you like, Frank for example...click their username...then you can click to see all or just their main posts.
There are alot of great people on this site...I think you are going to do great things. It is a beautiful world...Keep enjoying the ride.:yoda:
