if you didn't get to him a raccoon or cat would have, and they would have pulled him apart slowly for like 20 minutes

That's the problem with everyone in this thread. It's a matter of attitude. The only reason this elicits such an avoidant response in you is because you are looking at it like it is not fun to maim small animals. Learn to live a little!
How long has it been suffering? That can indicate how sever the injury is. What part of the head is damaged? It could recover with brain damage, but to what end, if it's a wild animal? I know basic neuropsych; basically, the further the injury is from the spine (more up), the less severe it is. I bet you could survive a bullet to the frontal cortex just fine if you could patch up the hemoraging.

Yeah I've always been a bit of a square, I'll admit.
I need to maim me some small animals.

the important thing is you had compassion for it, and tried to help the little dude out.
try not to get hung up on it.

were you ever in the military?
Nope.
Sometimes the rats I feed my snake are live when I purchase them, but I only feed pre-killed rodents to her. I prefer to buy them already dead and frozen, but there isn't a huge demand to supply reptile owners in my area so I'm sometimes stuck with whatever is available. When I get a live rat I kill it the same way as I suggested OP kill the squirrel because it is quick and efficient. It does suck though.
