She loved the teaching aspect and got tired of debating. After three years being too overqualified for McDonalds even, she found the career she's passionate about, which is vocational counseling for "troubled youth" or whatever PC term they're using these days. It was and remains a huge financial struggle for her carrying the debts and qualifications a PhD provides.
A PhD is such a liability. If you have any intent other than specialization in life, it can really bite you in the ass.
which is why i don't bother. i do philosophy on my own terms. i write the same. though, i'd like to make some money, but not without something that i think it really worth putting out.
i was gonna say do vocational counselling. i was thinking of doing that myself.
believe it or not. what a coinky-dink.

From what i've read - this is true. A masters is less so depending on field and country.

That's why I didn't so much understand the gentleman who suggested PhD or nothing. Masters can open up a lot.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to go back to school. I need to do more research on the value of different degrees in different countries to better complement my TESOL.

Depends on the field. In most of the biological sciences, a Masters and bachelors get you the same types of positions, the masters bringing you a slight edge. Essentially, a PhD lets you become faculty, hold grants, do original research etc. while a masters does not.

No kidding? Great breakdown, thanks, man!
I do know that for psych, a masters is a big difference from a bacholers in terms of the types of jobs available, but you're right, the difference between masters and doctoral is tremendously larger

The same goes for engineering, unless the Masters is an MBA. A BS in one of the engineering fields coupled with an MBA can yield 6 figures easy.

From what I know, this holds true. Unfortunately it some fields it seems like having a masters is almost prerequisite in order to get entry level jobs which only "require" a bachelors level of education. In other words, the competition for those entry level jobs is often very competitive and the person with the highest level of schooling will get the job. That said - a PhD will disqualify you from the same entry level positions due to being over-qualified. There is an abundance of PhD's aswell, so competition for the good research positions is extremely stiff. :S
Kind of crapshoot either way - but masters is definitely safer. Discussions like this make me nervous about further pursuing my undergraduate degree so late in life... *sigh*

Another awesome breakdown! Here's another friendly tip.
Search for work when the economy is doing well, not when it's convenient for your life. There will be an abundance of jobs; thus more entropy to help you slip your way into that better fit. This is a lot of why I'm looking to grow right now.
^great man, live it up! Spending daddy's money, or uncle sam's?

So I'm back at it with the hunt for a job hunt. I'm literally just clicking through a giant list of jobs and seeing what they're about. There's so much out there and I want to make sure the next 5-10 years of my life are invested in a positive direction.
Just bumping for support, ideas, or better methods of searching!
