Your information is incorrect. At least in America. You need a PhD or PsyD in clinical psychology to open your own practice. At the very least, a Masters to work as a "specialist" type in larger institutions (hospitals, schools, jails). A BA will certainly get you a job at McDonalds though!
I am considering going for a MA to follow that latter path on top of everything else.

Okay, I stand corrected. Sorry for the misinformation. I was just trying to help you build on the skills that you have already acquired.
To answer one of your other questions though, learning how to program in a few languages is definitely valuable. I know several and it has helped me land well paying jobs. Java is a pretty good and versatile language to learn.

This is true. One (of many things) which appeals about geology to me, is that the comprehensive nature of it lends itself to a variety of industries aswell as other science career paths.
Although I understand the sentiment of your statement - I'd like to point out that it is /well known that a BA in psych is "useless" when it comes to career avenues. On the otherhand - I chose my major after doing considerable labour market research. Labour statistics aswell as networking have indicated to me that undergraduate geology/geoscience degree is quite marketable when compared with many other science disciplines.
**not trying to sound like a dick, just pointing out that I didn't chose my major based on "hope" ("although I do realize that i used fluff-speak in my original post; I feel optimistic towards it...")

When posed with more schooling or any entry level job (outside of my major) that requires a 4 year degree, I balked. It was fun and eye opening; no regrets. But I could have majored in something practical that I can make a good living with, and minored in what surely is my personal, ideal major.
No doubt - I went into welding a handful of years back thinking i'd be living the dream and making huge money. I could be - but it isn't for me. Although different than your situation, suffice it to say that i vastly glamorized the profession, the level of work/sacrifice/preparation on my behalf that I would need to succeed and even the ease of finding a job after school. Lesson learned - like you said. In my case, it didn't cost me much aside from 6 months of time. *shrugs*

If you'd like to stay in the construction field, try to see if you can apprentice with a pro carpenter and learn the skill. A good carpenter can make some good money.

Carpentry is one of the lower paying trades in my area, fyi.
(never-the-less, pays pretty ok. $25/hr or so.)

Really? I don't know much about the trade, never having worked for it. But IMHO, another good field would be an Electrician. Personally those 2 appeal to me as I think knowing carpentry is a cool thing, and I know a bit about simple house wiring. And in those fields, you stay dryer and cooler. Plumbing would entail crawling around is tight, damp and cold crawlspaces. And roofing is not only dangerous but is hellish on hot days.

Roofing isn't even a red seal trade as far as i know.
Electrical and HVAC are too of the better paid and cushy trades - depending on what kind of work you find yourself doing.
Carpentry (framing) is alot of lifting wood/manual labour/loud noises and working in all weather conditions. Finishing is alot of bending and working overhead although fairly good working conditions, if you can stand being on your knees all day.
Welding and ironwork are among the top paid trades as far as i know - paid huge money to work in shitty/dangerous environments. (IMO)

I have a BA in psych and TESOL certification minor, with all the debt to accompany. I could start a life travelling to other countries to teach English for dirt wages now. I could go back to school for a Ma or PhD in psych for more debt. Or I could go back to school for something else entirely and more debt. Android programming? The reefer is a motivation killer though!
.
I don't think teaching overseas is shit wages everywhere. Don't get a masters in psych. Get the PhD or don't go back at all. That's my opinion. My BA has done nothing for me but gather dust. I would never go back for a graduate degree unless I intended to go all the way to doctorate. My buddy has PhD in my discipline (English) and he doesn't even own his own house and his car is shit. Academia isn't paying that well these days. And it takes years of poverty to get there. I see almost zero value in MA degree

As i said Quote:

My 19 year old cousin has been making $119,000/year welding aluminum pipe chases for an aluminum smelter in a remote region. Aluminum smoke is definitely harmful .... if you are working in a shop, you'll have air extraction equipment but never-the-less you are still exposed. Welding is hot as fuck too.
I have another friend who is a welder/ironworker and all around stand up guy (doesn't fit the stereotype, but is passionate about the work). He got gassed while at work and had to be taken offsite in a stretcher. (I can't remember the backstory to this, because a welder typically wouldn't be exposed to gases...)
But shit - I work in a pre-fab timber framing factory as a labourer. It's a dusty environment. Dust exposure is never a good thing, but being exposed to cedar (or other woods) can be really unhealthy. Personally i've experienced woodworkers lung despite wearing a dust mask and working in the segregated "clean" part of the factory....
I used to drywall and drywall dust contains silica.... also really bad for you.
Sorry for the tangent - just building the case for trades like electrical regarding occupational exposure.

Get back in a trade, learn it, know it,,,, then own it! I started in painting 20 years ago, got certified and started my own business 10 years ago.
I make $50 to $100 an hour depending what I am doing, I am always in different locations (Not stuck in some room all day, every day.), and every job is a different challenge.
Also I am in peak physical shape because my job requires I be moving all day long.... I love this shit.

Thanks for checking in, you guys. It's fun reading the little web you're all weaving for society!
As inert as argon is, it still couldn't be good to breathe in excess (welding in a poorly ventilated area). I know about welding hoods for industrial (fixed) welders, but idk how welders stay safe on the go either and wonder the same.

You know, that doesn't pay very well and the ranting of the psychotic meth addicts that live in our local bus stations indicate they have dedicated enough of their consciousness towards useless racing thoughts for all of humanity. Don't know why that came to mind. Next poster, please!
