What should I do with my life?

What are you doing with yours?
I've been toiling in the service industry for the last 2 years and construction for 10 years before that. I'm realizing that I do not want to surf entry level for the next 10-20 years.
I have a BA in psych and TESOL certification minor, with all the debt to accompany. I could start a life travelling to other countries to teach English for dirt wages now. I could go back to school for a Ma or PhD in psych for more debt. Or I could go back to school for something else entirely and more debt. Android programming? The reefer is a motivation killer though!
What path are you on? What are some of the more lucrative mainlines out there? I'm all for a relocation, but I don't mind Pub debris, either.

If you aren't absolutely sure of doing a PhD and are still considering it, don't do it.

I just decided to work on being a software programmer/developer. The cash looks great and a 1 year of focused study could really set you on the right path
I would suggest the same. Being able to earn 80k a year out of college, with an associates, or for some, not any degree at all, is truly amazing stuff

Your rain falls like crazy fingers Peals of fragile thunder keeping time Recall the days that still are to come some sing blue. Hang your heart on laughing willow stray Down to the water, deep sea of love Beneath the sweet calm face of the sea swift undertow.
Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know, See how it feels in the end. May lady lullaby sing plainly for you soft, strong, sweet and true. Cloud hands reaching from a rainbow tapping at the window, touch your hair So swift and bright strange figures of light float in air.
Who can stop what must arrive now? something new is waiting to be born Dark as the night you're still by my side shine inside . Gone are the days we stopped to decide where we should go, we just ride. Gone are the broken eyes we saw through in dreams gone, both dream and lie.
Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know, Feels like it might be all right, While lady lullaby sings plainly through you love still rings true. Never could reach it, just slips away but I try.

If you like the refer so much maybe you should learn to grow it and be a farmer. I wish I would've went into growing weed, but at that time I didn't think the risk was worth the reward. What else do you like and what are you already good at?
I was 19 and my life was going no where so I decided to be an electrician and it turned out I liked it. Then after I got my license I realized I was already as high as an electrician can go so I decided to go to college. I didn't want to give up the skills I already have so I went into electronic engineering and I'm going to try to get a job that requires both skills. Hopefully something like designing/repairing concert lighting or maybe traveling and repairing machinery and controls. I only have 2 more classes that need to finish to get my degree.

TOPDOG: is it really that easy to get into programming? I was thinking android, but it's so open source that it's probably pretty competitive. Is computer programming viable for anyone to just jump into after a year or two? I struggled a lot going into calculus and most of the languages I know are for speaking.
LOPHO: I like consuming pot, specifically. I also love growing shrooms, but that's illegal. Besides, agriculture is not the most lucrative. Living in WA, I have met many growers, it's too competitive out here to even do it illegitimately and would require a $10,000+ investment for all the equipment. It's also a LOT of work. Non-stop trimming, tending, etc. etc., not that that would deter me personally. PS: thank you for sharing your path! Glad you found something you enjoy!

Go down two states to Cali, easy outdoor growing, tons of trimming work, and you get to pass through Oregon if you drive
If you find the connections trimming is a good way to make quick money though it can get hard on the body sitting and working with your hands for days.
Easy way to make a lot of $ real quick though which can then be reinvested.

Cooking. I worry that this market is too competitive as well and that the industry will degrade my creativity/interest. It's the main thing I do that allows complete freedom of expression and I wouldn't want to lose that to the needs of my employer.
If I owned my own restaurant or business in any of these regards it wouldn't be an issue and I don't doubt I'd be able to find a place in the modern world. I do not have $10-30 grand saved up though.
MUSICLOVER: What kind of pay and how do you apply? I'm very good with manual labor, am trustworthy, and could always stand for some more opportunities to grind for some hard cash.

Then I have to find a niche or travel down a well known/competitive path.
What are some burgeoning business niches that look prosperous? Coffee stands and e-cig stores seem to have plateaued.

How did you get started as being an electrician? Im seriously considering trying to get into it but still trying to research it a bit.

Its not the kind of thing you apply for, either you know someone who needs work or someone who needs work finds you.
There is so much weed needing to be trimmed in Cali many outdoor farmers will take any random help they can get.
The pay can avry a lot, some people pay by the hour. Generally at least 15$ an hour if so, maybe even 20 if you are fast.
More common people pay by the pound which also varies, I have seen people pay as much as 150-200$ a pound or as low as 40$ for semi pre trimmed stuff.
Then their is the straight manual labor which is generally hourly is usually the same as trimming if not more for some things/ depending on the person.
Last season I was down in cali working with random Euro travelers and stuff who were just getting picked up nearby
Once you find work it comes easier too, lots of people who need help have friends who need help too.

I would do the TESOL thing in a hearbeat. Sure you'll make dirt wages compared to what you make here (depending where you work- Korea and Japan actually pay quite well) but the cost of living in the places with dirt pay have extremely low cost of living.
If I had a college degree, I would totally do the TESOL thing

To be an electrician you just need to get hired. Go to some electrical contractors and tell them you want to learn the trade, you're a hard worker, and responsible and all that. Eventually one will hire you and you learn on the job. They will also pay for you to go to an apprenticeship program to learn the theory and code.
Being an electrician can be both physically and mentally demanding sometimes so be ready for some hard work. For the past month I've been working in a building that is over 100 degrees with no breeze.

I know, and I'm a fool for not pursuing it more.
Bare in mind, it's such an easy path to find yourself on (4 year degree minimum and be a native English speaker for a LOT of places). Japan is nigh impossible to find a job without a couple years experience though.
Most entry level places pay $800-$1200USD per month and cost $500/month to live. It's a slightly better margin than I see over here now, and wouldn't be a long term career plan though (kinda a dead end) :/
I could become a career teacher a MA later for $35,000 a year, but idk if that's for me...

Regarding the growing; in cali, and colorado, I am sure it would be VERY easy to get started
And yes its fairly easy. Obviously I am just one guy with his experience. But if you go on craigslist, you can find numerous adds for software with very high pay. Going to your local community college, cutting out all distractions, and taking only 2 classes a quarter, you could probably finish in about 2 years. Seriously message me if you have any questions. But at the moment tech is really booming. Keep in mind I live in silicon valley, the hub of tech. So its EXTRA easy to find a job for me. I can speak for your area/interests

at 27 I decided to start upgrading with the intention of getting a science degree. I am now 1 year into a geology degree. Although geologists are all unemployed currently (generalization regarding the recession) hopefully the industry will have recovered by the time i graduate in 4 years. I feel optimistic towards it...
If i wasn't into getting a 4 year degree - I would consider land surveying. Great job prospects, 2 years schooling and relatively decent work environment if your into that kind of thing.

A four year degree is useful regardless of the major. That said, I went into my psych degree with the same hopes.
When posed with more schooling or any entry level job (outside of my major) that requires a 4 year degree, I balked. It was fun and eye opening; no regrets. But I could have majored in something practical that I can make a good living with, and minored in what surely is my personal, ideal major.
This goes for nicechrisman, who posted that video: It's not always the best idea to shoot towards idealism and worry about reality later. Sometimes it is though. My brother took a couple filmography classes out of pocket, knowing it would probably not lead anywhere. Now he has a decent photography job while he explores many other side options weekly.

If you have a BA in psychology, you could open up a practice as a therapist. Many people go to therapists to spew the bullshit going on in there life. It can pay pretty well too once you have built up a client base.
