wouldn't 1 qt of fine grade verm hold more water than 1qt of coarse? more verm/less dead space?
either way I'd recommend fine verm for the dry verm barrier.

I'm new...but I've used fine Vermiculite in several cake grows...always worked for me. I think it's just personal preference, but I could be wrong.

When I ran pftek I liked the course verm for coating the cakes because of it being more airy and seemed to help with better pinsets. But for a dry verm layer fine is better for sure but with all the bags of course verm I have bought there has been plenty of fine verm shake mixed in

Since I'm doing cakes can I do a bulk w/ coir, verm, and cow manure (pasteurized of course)?

Sure, you can just crumble the fully colonized cakes and mix them with the coir/verm/poo. Ppl do it pretty often, I never have but I've seen good results from other cultivators that have

Yes, always pasteurize properly when working with manure, there is little room for error. If you go over the pasteurization times(140-160f) for more than 10 minutes or don't pasteurize for the full hour, you will be getting trich without a doubt. Check out Frank Horrigan's writeup on pasteurizing, it's extremely helpful.
