Possible contamination?
    #22023875 - 07/31/15 10:35 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, all.

So I put my colonized substrate in the fruiting chamber less than 48 hours ago and I've noticed that one of the cakes has a thicker, off-white (almost yellow) looking patch.

Any ideas, or am I just paranoid? I should also mention that I'm quite the noob (this is my first time growing).

Also, is it common for mushroom pins to form less than 24 hours after being placed in the FC?

(after about 14 hours I noticed about 5 pins on one cake.)

If it comes from Nature, why is it illegal? That's a smack in the face to God.. Also breast reduction surgery.

Perhaps the pins were already there at birth. Did they sit long after colonizing all the way?

No, if anything I was worried I didn't let them colonize long enough. Half of the jars are still colonizing.

My biggest concern is the possible contamination and could it contaminate the others in the FC?

Looks like metabolites to me. Needs more fresh air exchange which is what is causing the thick white growth on the top of the cake.  You need more holes on your fruiting chamber (1/4" holes drilled every 2" on all 6 sides). Remember fresh air is the main pinning trigger and it helps to prevent contamination. Too much stale moist air is a breeding ground for mold. At the very least fan more often.

Awesome. I just drilled a few more holes. I'll also air it out a few more times a day. Hopefully that helps.

Thanks a lot.

I don't see any metabolites. You do understand metabolites is yellow-orange liquid right? That's yellowing/dying mycelium, and going tomentose from being too dry, as well as low fae. It needs to be shimmering/glistening wet all the time. Mist accordingly.

I did some research and I believe it's Schizophyllum commune contamination. It's grown a bit since the pic was taken.
