Artificial Life & Death
    #2202383 - 12/26/03 05:24 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Just for the sake of argument, let's pretend that an artificial sentient life form (ART) is developed later this century. This mechanical life form thinks, has emotions and for all intents and purposes is (or is indistinguishable from) a conscious, sentient being.

Swami (being the ball-buster that he is) removes ART's batteries. Essentially ART is now dead. Where did his "energy" go? Is this a retarded question? Why would any rational being believe that ART "went" anywhere at all?

Have you noticed that your signature, phonetically speaking, also says "Thinking Aloud!" ?
Intentional or accidental?

If the day ever comes that truly intelligent rational artificial life is created it will change many aspects of metaphysics. With the track record that it has so far that day will probably never come.

There is nowhere for ART to go, because it was already there all along. All of creation is united by a higher consciousness which is blocked out by our normal subjective consciousness. We are all one entity experiencing itself subjectively. The Atman(self) IS the Brahman(God). Energy AND matter are not so real as they seem. They are real in the sense that we experience them as such, but they are part of a greater reality that we cannot percieve with our five senses. Scientists now believe that there are at least 12 dimensions, although we can only percieve 3. It is my belief that our unifying higher consciousness resides in one of these dimensions.

Disclaimer: Everything I've written above except the part about the 12 dimensions is opinion, and is intended as such, rather than fact.

or hey, how about..

if you have two people in a room and five leave, how many have to return for the room to be empty?

it makes as much sense and is at least as thought provoking.

his "energy" went with you in his "batteries"

Why would such an advanced machine be battery operated? That doesn't even make sense. Art should channel his energy from other people's chakras. Energy

The way I see it...it?s artificial and thats what it all boils down to. It?s essentially fake, it is only programmed to the best of it?s ability to mimic human gestures and so forth. Now, I know you could say, well, "So are humans, essentially, except we are only biological computers"...
Humans run on "different batteries" than robots...Soul, Chakra, Spirit, Ghost, Superconsciousness, etc., whatever word you choose..And with the way the word ?battery? is commonly used, I don?t really think it does our souls much justice, but for argument?s sake, it?ll suffice...
Until I see Unsolved Mysteries about Ghosts and Spirits of deceased robots, or witness one myself, I?ll find it quite hard that ART truly has a conscious soul...
Looking at the infinitely BIG picture, from the big bang of the universe to the present, I find it hard to believe that the universe has absolutely no conscious force in it...of ALL the almost infinitely large amount of possibilities, THIS, is what happened, I?ve read in Science and Physics/Astronomy magazines discussing the nature of the universe; that it, in fact, is NOT a Universe, but a Multi-verse...in the theory that for every single situation that has more than one possible outcome, each outcome DOES happen, in another universe. In another Universe, there is another YOU, in the same spot, right now, but slightly different in whatever way because of a different decision that was made, by that person. They proved this mathematically on a very very very TINY scale regarding neurons and particles of light. Of all the possibilities originating from the very moment and quite possibly even beyond the big bang itself...THIS is the one that has the right formula to sustain life. And then THIS, in turn, just like a fractal*, then springs out another multitude of possibilities, and each one happening in parallell universes, and so on and so on. How many times must a perfect house of cards just "happen" to fall in place, purely by "chance", for people to realize that their IS a higher consciousness in the Universe. From this, you take what you want in your beliefs and so on, only so much can be said, but much more can be seen, felt and understood.
*

At any given moment, life is completely senseless. But viewed over a period, it seems to reveal itself as an organism existing in time, having a purpose, trending in a certain direction.
Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)

If you put the batteries back is ART once again sentient?

Whether the answer is yes or no the potential for ART was before and remains after the batteries are removed. I can't say where this potential is, but it's somewhere.

Yes it is a retarded question.

Yes, this question is retarded. We are assuming for the sake of argument that ART can be created... an artificial being that isn't just Chalmers' zombie simulating intelligence, ART would need to have subjective experience, thoughts, desires, etc.

We don't know if its possible, but if it is, it basically proves materialism true. If materialism is proven true, then obviously ART didn't go anywhere, and this is a good comparison for disproving other philosophies of mind.

In the case of people... we do have qualia, subjective experiences that are completely personal. We aren't anywhere near being able to create ART, there is incentive to try but no reason to believe its possible.

For the sake of argument, no rational being would believe ART went anywhere.
