Terrible results with pink oyster and fuel pellets

I've had terrible results trying to grow pink oysters on fuel pellets. I've never gotten them to fully colonizing and fruit yet. This last time I made up two bags. It looks like they half colonized, and then had some type of bacterial infection. One ended up smelling like rotten feet or blue cheese . The other one smelled like sweet fruit . The only thing I see wrong with the substrate, might be that it's too dry. But I always thought that bacteria thrives in a in The only thing I see wrong with the substrate, might be that it's too dry. But I always thought that bacteria thrives in a really wet environment. I've been pasteurizing them at 160° .Any thoughts or advice?

pinks are super fast colonizers on straw. like a week to 10 days. but they take about a month on fuel pellets. so you should be sterilizing probably.

Yeah. I've had successful grows on straw. And I have lions mane going on fuel pellets, but when I think of it, maybe the water I used on them was about 190°. I think the next time I make a bag of pink oysters on fuel pellets I'll just use boiling water. It can't turn out any worse.

Well depending on your elevation water boils around 213 degrees F. And thats past your target temps. for pasteurizing. Seems like mold would be mostly the issue if your over cooking it. Do you smell your spawn before mixing it into your sub?
My pinks on straw start pinning before full colonization, and I don't really see what I consider full colonization until later flushes. The small runs of pinks I do on sterilized sawdust do seem to take longer.

Yeah, I smelled the spawn, and it seemed OK. Not sure what to think.

Incredible! Mine took about 13 days to colonize and started pining about 3-4 days after putting in the SGFC.

Update. The sawdust colonized well, but fruiting was pretty pathetic. Straw does way better for pinks apparently. I also noticed that I can't expect much more than 2 fruitings that are decent.
