Do Believers Really Believe?
    #2202114 - 12/26/03 01:57 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

In my limited experience, the answer is a resounding no!

How many Castaneda followers are willing to jump off a 100 foot cliff without a chute or other apparatus? None?

When a loved one is going to Hawaii on a winter vacation, do people weep with deep grief? No. But when they go to "a better place"; ie., Heaven, the "Great Reward" there is tremendous sadness.

After 9 /11 how many Christians "turned the other cheek" and "loved their enemy"? Almost nil. They are as bloodthirsty as any other group even though "Thou shalt not kill!" and ""Revenge is mine!" sayeth the Lord"".

I could come up with thousands of examples.

How many takers of 22+ Swami Challenges? Only one who reneged.

Where is this amazing faith and belief?

I really, really do practice my beliefs. Took a long time to get there, though.

I was ripped off by someone from whom I rented an office. I had so trusted him. I wanted to do something to get even, but I remember that God takes revenge for us, so I did nothing but pack my stuff and move out. That was really hard, because I felt like a fool.

I also "turn the other cheek". Makes you appear weak to people, but I don't care. I love when someone thinks that, because I "turn the other cheek", I must be a lay-down. I'm pretty tough. It depends on the situation, when I need to stand up to someone. God also doesn't want us to be fools.

Maybe the still living person is crying because they know that they will have to go through the rest of their lives without ever seeing that person again. That hurts. If all of my friends moved to Hawaii, it would hurt.

I partially agree with you on this, but to allow someone to attack your villiage is to give all others a ticket to do the same. I don't think it's such a spiritual thing to let people destroy you.

"I don't think it's such a spiritual thing to let people destroy you."

Depends on your beliefs...

Nah, just pack a bag and gop join 'em. Hear that Maui Wowie is some great bud!

That is my point exactly. The believers are as stuck on the physical plane as the non-believers and don't truly accept Jesus' word and the spiritual nature of man.

i love your threads.

i dont believe in much of anything, so i couldnt tell you.

i think beliefs are very hazardous to the human psyche.

a lot of people have a tendancy to start believing and to stop thinking.

i try not to let that to happen to me.

thank you, tool!

Well, I'm not a Castaneda follower, so I cant speak for them, but I consider myself wise enough to realize that you have to learn to walk before you learn to run. Do I believe in psychic ability? Certainly. But I also realize these things take lifetimes to learn, and I'm not about to waste another perfectly good vessel trying to bite off more than I can chew.

Well, presumably when one goes on a vacation, one generally tends to come back after a fairly short period of time. This isn't always the case with death. I dont think that most mourners at funerals are crying for the deceased, they are crying for themselves because they miss the deceased and have no way of knowing when and if they will see them again.

As for myself, I smile at funerals. I've also left explicit instructions in my Will and Testament for my family and friends to celebrate my death. I want there to be DJs, lasers, and free drugs for all, paid for by whatever assets I leave behind. I have recently had to attend a few funerals and always get the distinct impression that the deceased had no interest in making people sit in a crowded chapel wearing uncomfortable suits for an hour while some preacher that didnt even know them tells the people that did all about the deceased.

One of my first gut reactions to 9/11 was the realization that they didnt attacks us because they are evil, they attacked us because we are evil. We've been screwing them for years and 9/11 is what it came down to (although I'm sure there's still quite a few more demons that need to be exorcised in this matter)

Anyway, I understand a lot of what you are saying and have been saying the same thing to a lot of people i know for years. My Christian mother is terrified of death and doesnt understand why I do drugs. I've brought up the same arguements you used here. I've told her that the demonization of ethnogens shows a distinct lack of faith in God.

But its unfair for you to lump all "believers" into a blanket category. I thought you didnt believe in overgeneralization.

the fact is that there are many people who profess to have faith when in fact they have none. But not all of us are bullshitting, and its unfair to assume that just because you havent gotten the results you wanted out of your little games.

Remember the words of Jesus:

"Many are called, but few are chosen."

I did this. Fibers shot out of my navel and stuck to the lines of the world. Men of power just saw me moving from line to line, but average men thought I was flying!!!

How many Castaneda followers spent a decade learning under the Naguel Don Juan Matus?

Isn't that fucked up? Grieving over lost ones? I think it is hard no matter what your beliefs, but the idea that they are in a better place is merely a consulation.

Don't even get me started on those Christians. I'm working on a new character where all that I say is "Christians," in a strained voice. I don't know, I think it has potential.

There are lots of cool answers in the thread but I agree the most with LearyFan.

/me falls over in a dead faint.

There is a big difference between professors of faith and practitioners of faith. Simply put, most believers don't really believe.

What would you can a "vegan" who consumes tons of animals and animal products?

Notice that this kind of hypothesizing means we are what we do.

What are you?

That was my diet when I was a vegetarian.  Actually my dictionary says:

2. Consisting primarily or wholly of vegetables and vegetable products: a vegetarian diet.

Which is exactly what my diet was, primarily.

A vegan like the one I described would be a liar or a hypocrite or both.

Likewise with "believers".
