What would be the reason for no rhizomorphic growth?

Of course it is mold. But is it the mold he is hoping for? I'm gonna say yes. But only time will tell

Rhizo growth usually happens when the mycelium is starved and looking for available nutrients. Being as your doing brf jars, there's more than enough nutes to go around, so that type of growth is completely normal.

I'm betting this is your first time. Just relax and don't be so paranoid and constantly wanting to check the progress of your cakes.
mold in brf jars are rare anyway

If the syringe wasn't leaking through the crack or anything it might be fine.
