I went to Walmart, the other day, to find a cheap, effective stove top. Would what I describe work? Also, I saw some food steamers, there. Would they work?

Dependings what youre trying to do. You might could pull off some pf tek cakes with the steamer . Not grain spawn though . The stove top will work but if your gonna get into this hobby a pressure cooker is a must.

Just get the PC, it'll save you a lot of stress down the road.

Hm... I think I ran across an 8-quart Walmart PC, the other day. How much would it do?

Not big enough, get a 23qt presto off amazon (~75$) , it's a great investment, if you're serious about growing for awhile.

If the burner can boil a big pot of water then it can probably bring a pressure cooker up to temp.
I have the 16qt presto pressure cooker. It holds 7 quart jars comfortably. I've taken good care of it and it's lasted me over two years now with no replacement parts needed yet (knock on wood)
If you can't get a pressure cooker you can steam sterilize grain jars for 8 hours or PF Tek (brown rice flour jars) for 2 hours.

I've tried a few of those single burners. The problem is they won't boil a larger pot of water. Which will not allow a PC to build pressure. The biggest 110v I could find was 1100w. They do make 220v ones. They'll set you back about 200 bucks but it would do the job.

Hmm...220v? Have a link? WHere do I buy one?
Looked here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1/189-8910635-4479826?url=search-alias%3Dkitchen&field-keywords=220v+burners
Seems more expensive than you indicated. WHat are you referring to, exactly?

Okay...that makes sense. For that matter, I may wish just to get the gas stove in my house, working. Thank you.
