Is this jar ready for a G2G transfer, or should I wait for it to colonize a little more.
    #22019365 - 07/30/15 11:19 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

The jar I inoculated from MS about one month ago seems to look pretty healthy, but I think I should wait another few days for the mycelium to consolidate before I do a grain to grain transfer with it.  I shook it after roughly 30% colonization about 1 week ago.  What do you all think?  Does it look healthy, and should I wait a little before using it as a G2G donor jar?

Looks good to me, after your transfers, give your jar a good wife to make sure it smells like fresh mushrooms

I like to break up my jar on a duct tape roll before I G2G... Other people use phone books or a bike tire:goodluck:

Yeah, I'm really hoping it doesn't smell funky.

Hopefully I do okay.  This is the first time I've attempted a G2G in my SAB.  I'd rather use a flowhood, but I don't want to have to wait several more months until I can save up to build one.

You can do it bro! I've successfully done it...I know it seems common sense, but I followed Frank's tek...have you checked it out?

No, could you provide a link? I studied up on TrancendingLife's tek on g2g in a SAB.

1. Soap up the SAB with a mixture of water and dish detergent. The floor of my SAB is very soapy  when I do work in it so "contams can stick" to the soap

2. Wipe down all jars with ISO, Lysol whatever you prefer

3. And lastly, IME I've been using water mixed with bleach to spray the inside of my tub before working. But that's just my two pants

If you prepare your grain properly, you should never have to beat your jar against anything to break up the grain. A few weak taps on the side of the jar until the mycelium network begins to fracture and then a good shake should do the trick.

I guess I don't really beat it...it usually takes around 3 or 4 taps to start the process then I shake it...
Maybe I am being too rough with my mycelium.
Thanks insanemike for the insight.:takingnotes:
I think I am still filling my jars too full...hard to shake well.

Yeah, TrancendingLife said he lines the bottom of his SAB with paper towels soaked in a 10% bleach solution, then sprays the inside with bleach, and finally lysol before closing the lid.  But, I've been told that using soapy water will work too.  He did this thing where he put alcohol soaked paper towels over the jar lids.  This seemed like a good idea since he was able to use the towels to further clean both the donor jar and the receiving jar before transfer.

I just built a new, much larger SAB specifically with g2g transfers in mind.  Here is what the finished thing looks like:

The hardest part for me was having enough height/headroom...to hold a quart jar in the air without touching anything and do the transfer...I'm going to build a bigger SAB soon for that very reason.
Good job on that SAB btw:thumbup:

That's the exact same reason why I built a flow hood. I could find tall tubs but they were to narrow or wide tubs but they were all too short. I could never find a tub that was both. There were other reasons for building the hood but that was top 3 if not top 2 reason for doing so.

I found a tote at Wally World... It's going to work out much better...its clear and much taller than my old SAB
How expensive is a flow hood build?

Depending on what filter and blower you use, you could potentially build a decent one for under $300.  If you buy one from FP, you'll be paying around $500 + Shipping.

It cost me a few hundred in materials but I haven't looked back since building it. I think it was and will still be worth the investment for years to come. I'm a lifer in this hobby, I've been hooked since day one.

Thank you, but I am concerned that it isn't quite tall enough.  Unfortunately I couldn't find a tub that was tall enough to stack two jars on top of each other and was wide enough for an uncramped work space.  It'll still work, though.

Yeah, I'm hoping to build a 24" x 24" flowhood here in the next months.  Like you, I look at it as an investment.  Since it has the potential to last for more than a decade of use, a few hundred bucks isn't really that much.

I could definitely see it being worth the investment... I'm too broke at the moment... But it definitely goes on my list of priorities.
I am definitely hooked on this hobby/obsession myself...its actually kept me sane during some hard times.
