Gypsum as a soil Amendment
    #22018448 - 07/30/15 05:44 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Does anyone have experience using Gypsum pellets longterm in their clay yard? I bought a bag because I heard if applied and mixed into the top layer of soil, over time it will break down the clay and help make the soil amenable to growing plants. The guy where I bought it said I would have to reapply after 6 months. Sources online say to reapply every 3-4.

If you want to break down heavy clay and improve your soil, plant corn for 2-4 seasons and till the stalks it under each season. If you plant an alternate cover crop that goes when corn can't (i.e. a winter cover crop) and do the same thing then you will improve your soil faster.

I was skeptical, but it works really well especially in your location.

In the region where I am, Heavy clay soil is a problem as well as acid soil.

sometimes people here mix in gypsum, as well as Sand.

My folks have several acres of land. If its for a large area, get a truck load of sand delivered and till it into your garden. you can mix in granular gypsum and agricultural lime, if a tad on the acid side.
