Assuming that people are talking about you

When you hear people, especially people that you know, who are audible but you can't fully understand what they're saying, do you generally assume that they're talking about you?
I heard a couple of friends in another room talking and I assumed they were talking about me, and I realized that I tend to do this all the time. If I'm around my parents and they're in the kitchen talking, I always assume it's about me. I think I've always done this.

I used to, in the throes of my Scitzoaffetive disorder. Fortunately, the meds have helped with that.

Is that your only symptom OP? Do you ever think people are following you or plotting against you. Do you have crippling social anxiety? Voices in your head?

No - i haven't even ever considered this. I do no assume people are talking about me, unless there is an actual indication that they are.

Well, besides that, I often thought people were picking up my thoughts, considerable paranoia and voices in my head. It wasn't pleasant, to say the least. That's not to say you're that way. You can think other folks are talking about you and not be totally schizoid.

Pretty bad social anxiety at times. Etizolam has been very helpful for the past few months, but it also dissolves my memory. I'm currently tapering off right now, and its going pretty well so far.
I have pervading negative thoughts fairly often. Sometimes I think everyone hates me. Or my friends only want to hang out with me because they feel obligated or out of pity.
I think I'm on some government lists or maybe watched by the police in my area.
I dont think any of these things are very severe or unmanageable though. My old therapist recommended that I read The Stranger by Albert Camus(which I happened to finish tonight) and I feel like that book gives a fairly accurate portrayal of my personality, if that helps. The protagonist may be a bit extreme of an example, but I'm generally indifferent, introverted, and in my own head.

Phenibut is a good legal drug for dealing with high stress SA situations.
It might not effect your memory like the benzos.
I prefer it vastly to benzos.

The pervading negative thoughts; thinking everyone hates you, and your friends feeling obligated or out of pity echoes my deep wading in the schizophrenic waters a few years back.

Yeah but didn't you also have other symptoms on top of those?
To the other poster: I'll check out phenibut but isn't it addictive and builds a tolerance fast? I'm sleeping alright. I had to take .5 mgs of etizolam go fall asleep last night, but I'm still tapering.

There are psychological explanations for a propensity to assume others are talking about you, or that you are on government watch lists, or a person of interest to the police. All three of these can be explained by feelings of insignificance or worthlessness, as all three propensities function to increase your perception of importance to others. Schizoaffective disorder or schizophrenia do not apply unless you have experienced a psychotic episode that was not drug induced. Other symptoms must also be present.
Phenibut is highly addictive, and tolerance to its effects does develop quickly. Attempting to self-medicate with phenibut would probably not be a good idea here. Much more helpful would be identifying and uprooting the cause of your distress, whether through consultation with a psychotherapist or through dietary and lifestyle changes. If these approaches are unsuccessful, that is when medication of some sort begins to make sense.

It sounds like you have the right idea. Tapering is certainly a wise decision. Drugs may not be what you really need in your life right now. I had a lot to work out when I was younger and drugs where not what I really needed at the time. You might want to check out the book Siddhartha.

I was seeing a therapist a few months ago, but I don't like talking about myself, and I already make it a point not to complain, so I felt stupid trying to sit there and come up with things to say. I didn't really talk much and I could tell my therapist was getting discouraged.
I'm moving sometime within the month, so hopefully that helps out a little. My diet is currently terrible too.
