Blue bruising?!?!

so I've posted before about my friend having some blue bruising on one of his cakes in his FC now. Well today he found another spot on a different cake that seems to be a much darker blue with a faint green outline. He can't tell if it's dis colored mycelium (bruising) or if it's another layer on top of the mycelium (mold). He picked it up and said there didn't seem to be any strange or sour smell to it. Are there any other tall tale signs if this is mold? It would be a shame to throw this cake out since it has the most Mushie growth out of the rest of the cakes.

That looks like mold to me. See how its dark blue and concentrated in one spot of the cake. I would toss it, so it doesn't infect the other cakes in the same tub.

Why does it have to be blurry on the spot that's actually important? :/.. if it has a granular/Sandy look to it, or looks like a piece of felt/fuzzy then it's mold. If it literally looks like the mycelium turned blue, then it's bruising. I've seen almost black bruising before, so shade doesn't matter BTW. If you get a better picture, maybe with macro or something, I'll be able to confirm it. Right now all I can do is tell you the way to tell.

Is there any way you might have bruised the area yourself or did it just appear? If it just appeared I'd say mold, check if theres fuzz on the top. If you have doubts toss it its not worth contaminating your fc for the sake of trying to save a single cake.

Here you go man. This is the best pic I can get. Will it spread throughout the mycelium if it's mold? Fruit growth on this cake is insane. Right now my friend said he put it in a poor mans terrarium to isolate it but is keeping it for now for a more definitive answer.

I'm positive that's bruising. Couple reasons. The corners on top dry out first, and ime seem to bruise first. Try leaving it on a saucer with 10-15 ml of water and replacing it every morning. It'll really help develop the big pinset too. Also it has no fluffy/granular look, despite the blurry pic.

Why not a standard SGFC?

The rest are in a SGFC. He was tee to isolate this one just in case it's a bad cake.

True . Should he be on the lookout for anything else in particular? Just in case. And could you elaborate on the leaving it in a saucer part? I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean

You will know if it's contaminated in a couple of days. Once you see it spread, toss it! If not, then that is some serious bruising!!

Like the jar lid, but with a puddle of water on it. Sit the cakes in it and replace the water every day. I'd honestly do that for all your cakes. It really seems to make them flourish.

In posting this for comparison. One of his other cakes has bruising. This is more spread out, a lighter blue hue, and looks more like discolored mycelium.

Alright. Thanks for the asvice! And how likely is it to spread to other cakes if it's put back in the SGFC with 7 other cakes and actually is mold?

That's bruising for sure.

Maybe two or three days, who knows, but why take the risk

Literally blue mycelium lol. It happens a lot with big pinsets

Alrighty. I'm going to take your word for it that that small dark blue spot is bruising. You seem very confident. I appreciate the advice brother!

Yo, so can you take a look at this. I was just sent this picture of the cake that had that dark blue spot. If you look closely you can see dark spots with faint green tinting around it. Opinions please?

Bruising still. Tell your friend another good way of checking is rubbing the areas with a qtip. If it wipes off onto the qtip easily, then it's a mold. Bruising doesn't wipe onto the qtip. I used to do that before being able to just use my eyes.

Dark blue with green around it is characteristic of bruising? I thought bruising was exclusively the lighter blue and no green. I will tell him to do the qtip test and see what happens.

It can bruise green lol. It can bruise black too. You'd be shocked what can come out of it. Those pins look like they'll explode soon
