Tip leads to bust of hallucinogenic mushroom operation
http://www.myfoxboston.com/story/29572425/tip-leads-to-bust-of-hallucinogenic-mushroom-operation
CONCORD, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) — Police in Concord, New Hampshire, say an anonymous "crime line" tip led to the discovery and dismantling by police of a large-scale hallucinogenic mushroom operation.
Police have charged 32-year-old Derek Milioto and 23-year-old Luke Robinson — both of Concord — with possession of controlled drugs.
Authorities say it took two days to execute a search warrant at their Thorndike Street home in Concord because of the scale of the operation. Agents found mushrooms growing in various locations in the house and containers of dried hallucinogenic mushrooms.
Milioto was also charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Police say two young children live at the home.
According to court records, Milioto told his children he was growing the mushrooms for tea and that it was a secret. Friday in court, his sister asked a judge for leniency so he could see his children while the charges are being sorted out.
"He's a loving father and he cares about his kids and I think it would be extremely hard for him to go through this process without seeing them," she said.
The judge set bail at $1,000 cash for both men.
Concord police detectives are now trying to figure out where these drugs were being sold and if this is part of a bigger operation.

I don't think it was just a tip (someone correct me if I'm wrong here), I remember reading another article about this last week that says neighbors reported smelling weed and seeing a lot of foot traffic when the police were asking around about the tip. So I think they used the tip, foot traffic and pot smell all together to get the warrant.
Whether anecdotal information like that should be enough to invade a person's home is another matter...

I took a look and on the Wikipedia page about search warrants, it says you can obtain a search warrant based on an anonymous tip as long as the circumstances seem to agree with it (probable cause). I guess the tip, foot traffic and pot smell was enough to convince this judge.

Sounds like maybe he wasn't being very cautious. Still sucks that someone can be forced into a cage for mushroom cultivation tho:/

Nightmare come true...
Growing around his children and telling them to keep his growing magic mushrooms a secret might well have been his undoing.
That should actually be added to the list of blatent no no's. Dont grow around kids.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but....
I don't understand why people risk getting charged with a felony manufacturing when they have kids. There have been two stories this week about families split up over this. Does whatever supplemental income they're making really justify those kids possibly no longer having parents?
I switched to gourmet mushrooms years ago when I got married because I didn't want to put my wife in the pigs' crosshairs. And she was an adult. It just seems selfish to gamble everything like this when you have young children depending on you.
I don't know, what do you guys think?

Couldn't agree more Hitsuzen.
I haven't cultivated actives in almost a decade. As passionate as I am for all Fungi including actives. I'd rather not contribute to the stereotype by doing something so selfish as dealing. especially being sloppy about it... not to mention the kids. At least that is my way of seeing it. If I want to make money from cultivation I will do it with edibles. It may take more work. but this hobby isn't for the lazy or the impatient.

Do people even make any real money though? I don't grow because I spend about 25 dollars a year on mushrooms. It is so cheap I don't understand why people grow when they have so much they could potentially lose.

A decent bulk grow in an extra bedroom can probably generate a bit of revenue. Back of the envelope math? Several times the yearly minimum wage in the United States (depending on location, of course). So I can see the appeal of that extra cash... but it's chump change compared to losing your kids.

That is a pretty lenient bail for manufacturing a controlled substance.

I get where you're coming from, and you do have a good point. However, I think the money may be what it comes down to in many cases. You say it's "chump change" compared to losing your kids... but what if all you can get is a shitty minimum wage job, and you have kids? Minimum wage won't be enough to give the kids everything they need. Hell, what if you can't even get a job that good? Things are tough out there. If your option is your kids wanting, versus your kids being well provided for, and the difference is you growing some shrooms? I can see how that might seem like almost an easy choice, to some.
And keep in mind that many people feel like a bust will never happen to them, personally, until it actually does. Pople always feel they're cautious enough. "Oh, I'm not stupid and careless like the others. Won't happen to me" seems to be their mantra.
Couple a serious need for extra cash, with a feeling like they're too far under the law's radar to be seen? I could easily see people doing stuff like that, thinking there's little risk and no problem....
