Any of yall Windows dudes upgrade yet? I'm not totally sure what's going on but I think it's downloading maybe
Any good? Any bad? I'm currently backing up my music & what not so I can do a whole clean install with it
Pretty much turns any computer or tablet into a portable Xbox one for anyone who owns one since you can stream the Xbox to Windows 10 which is pretty snazzy. Don't really know anything else about it though. Hope it ain't garbage trash junk.

i wont be upgrading simply because updates are manditory and automatic in the regular versions. you can only turn them off in the expensive 'ultimate' edition or whatever they're calling it.
its ironically making windows 10 less secure though, and forcing people to download updates and drivers that cause OS and graphics card crashes. so im guessing that will change soon and they will let people turn that shit off. i might give it a shot then

I won't upgrade to a new windows ever, willingly. The last time I upgraded willingly was from like 98 to ME. Left a really horrible taste in my mouth and I vowed to never do it again. If I have a stable version of windows that's up to date enough to run everything I need, I'll stay with it no matter how old it is. I didn't even wanna upgrade from XP to 7, but did eventually although not really by choice. When it was time to get a new computer, before I built them myself, they were all windows 7 standard and I didn't wanna shell out the extra money to buy XP. I've grown to love 7 so and have the install disk, so I'll probably keep it until it stops being supported.

if it ain't broke don't fix it. Ain't shit windows 7 can't do, or shouldn't be able to do with regular updates, no need for a new OS other than for more NANNY STATE backdoors to invade our privacy.
fact that they are giving it away for free should tell you enough to stay way the fuck away from it, obviously full of invasive shit

Not sure yet if I want to upgrade or not on my good laptop. I have this Compute Stick with "8.1 with Bing" and I'm not too attached to that OS. Supposedly it's eligible for the upgrade but I haven't seen the tray icon for it show up yet.

So do you just download it, install it, restart and everything is just like I left it but with window 10, or does it reset absolutely everything?

your programs and stuff will still work. at least the vast majority of them. its not a fresh install or anything
remember how they used to release 'service packs' for windows? its like installing one of those basically

Windows 8 actually did have noticeably faster speeds. Windows 7 had a better interface.
Windows 10 seems to be the best of both worlds and being able to stream my Xbox directly to my laptop & future tablet is a pretty big reason for me to upgrade alone. I could be like at a hotel in fuckin like I dunno, space er something and turn on my Xbox from a fuckin tablet or laptop and like play it and shit. That's pretty neat.

I had no indications of it really either, I had to right click the windows icon on the bottom right of my screen and then click like something and then it started like a secret download which is Windows 10. It's like literally like impossible to get without knowing exactly what to do it seems, very bizarre I hope I'm downloading it right...

obviously you've timed everything to know this for sure, and new drivers have nothing to do with what i said.
As you use an operating system, add app's, delete apps, and in general, using it, it will slow down, period. why, because the registery gets bigger, fragmentation, file corruption, ect ect, lots of reasons, they all happen, inevitable, period.

its a fraction of the size, alot more simple, id bet anything it goes from windows login to loaded and running the fastest. The only advantage the new os's might have is they might be designed to work with newer motherboard bios's better to do that quick load shit to go from power to login quicker, but again im not 100% on how much of that is related to the operating system.
but once loaded, windows 95 has alot less shit going on, so i see no reason it wouldn't run quicker.
that said there isn't much software around these days for it, and newer apps are optimized better to run on these newer os's, but as far as the OS itself, well like i said i bet that is faster because there ain't shit there.
its like Dos, that shit loads like bam, because there isn't nothing to it

and i bet PAINT on windows 95 is still going to be better designed than the shit on windows 10, i still don't understand how they can fuck the simple shit up so bad, paint on windows 7 is crap. i used to use paint for simple quick cropping n shit, but its too useless and annoying on windows 7

are you aware that every one of those examples can be fixed? there are dozens of good, free programs that can clean and defrag registry, defragment the disc(windows actually has a native app for this since XP) and detect and remove/fix corrupt files?
OS's get slower because you don't take care of them. if simply having an app installed on your pc, and not in use, is slowing it down..... you are using some sketchy programs.
does this look familiar?

of course they can "mostly" be fixed, however that wasn't the topic and has no relation to the points i made. which is that most people upgrading will be doing so on 'old' os's, then get a 'fresh' os and think omg its so fast

upgrading to windows 10 doesnt give you a fresh OS, all of your programs stay unless you intentionally do an OS wipe anything bogging down your uncared-for system will still be there

Windows didn't steal from apple. There were tons of different people at the time experimenting with graphical interfaces for operating systems. Apple didn't even invent it. Sure, the mac set a standard for future operating systems, much like the iPhone did for smart phones, but everything that the mac did had been done before. It was just never put together in such a polished package.
That's what steve jobs was really good at: design. He took a bunch of great ideas and made them beautiful, but none of the ideas were his.

All of the tests that were posted showing windows 8 speed improvements over 7 were done with CLEAN installs of both OS.
-on topic
I have been using Windows 7 since it first came out in 2009 because of DX11. I used it until Windows 8 came out (2012 i think?), and then I swapped to 8 for a few months. I hated how hard it was to find the files that you need and they renamed everything so you can't find shit. The HDD that was running windows 8 died after about 7 months, so I lost the windows 8 install (had no disk). I just installed windows 7 (since I still had keys for it) and have been using it ever since. It is a perfect OS for most people, and was the last MS OS that had standard window's features

i didn't realize windows 7 was windows 95 or 98, good to know.
reading up on windows 8 tho, interesting 'trick' they did for startup was saving the "state" to the harddrive, so its not even booting up, its just loading up the last boot per say. so in reality you can only compare the "first" boot it ever does for a fair comparsion of OS speed.
Which is why when you look at a few of the tests you'll notice windows 8 is actually slower, because its even more bloatware than windows 7 was, granted most are faster, but the point i was making was it wasn't something magically faster that you would upgrade for. in all the tests im seeing the results are so small you really wouldn't notice them except for the startup compared to windows 7 i suppose. but again thats really just a trick, and i have windows 8 on a laptop, windows 7 on my pc, and the laptop takes like 5 minutes to fucking load. apples and oranges i suppose but you'd think by the claims you hear it would more than make up for that

I was just talking about the actual speed of the operating system:
-how long it takes to open files up
-how long it takes to search
-how many FPS games get
-etc
And windows 8 comes out on top because it is better optimized than windows 7. Some of the comparisons you wouldn't notice, but things like search speeds and game FPS is quite noticeable. When I did my own testing, I found BF3 to give me on average 4-5fps more on windows 8 than 7, and that is very noticeable to a trained eye
The reason windows 8 boots up so fast is because it has a more optimized boot priority than previous versions of windows, ie instead of opening up your internet, drivers, system checks, etc on the initial bootup, it prioritizes opening the log in screen. Due to it's design, it is impossible for 2 idential hard drives, one with 7 and one with 8, to have the windows 7 drive boot up faster.
You probably have more files and junk on your laptop that has windows 8

[...] The details
Wolf Richter at Business Insider, reporting on an article in the German-language newspaper Die Zeit, has the story (h/t the Naked Capitalism links page; my emphasis and some reparagraphing everywhere):
Quote:
According to leaked internal documents from the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) that Die Zeit obtained, IT experts figured out that Windows 8, the touch-screen enabled, super-duper, but sales-challenged Microsoft operating system is outright dangerous for data security. It allows Microsoft to control the computer remotely through a built-in backdoor.
Keys to that backdoor are likely accessible to the NSA – and in an unintended ironic twist, perhaps even to the Chinese.
The backdoor is called “Trusted Computing,” developed and promoted by the Trusted Computing Group, founded a decade ago by the all-American tech companies AMD, Cisco, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, and Wave Systems. Its core element is a chip, the Trusted Platform Module (TPM), and an operating system designed for it, such as Windows 8. Trusted Computing Group has developed the specifications of how the chip and operating systems work together.
Its purpose is Digital Rights Management and computer security. The system decides what software had been legally obtained and would be allowed to run on the computer, and what software, such as illegal copies or viruses and Trojans, should be disabled. The whole process would be governed by Windows, and through remote access, by Microsoft.
Now there is a new set of specifications out, creatively dubbed TPM 2.0. While TPM [1.0] allowed users to opt in and out, TPM 2.0 is activated by default when the computer boots up. The user cannot turn it off. Microsoft decides what software can run on the computer, and the user cannot influence it in any way.
Windows governs TPM 2.0. And what Microsoft does remotely is not visible to the user. In short, users of Windows 8 with TPM 2.0 surrender control over their machines the moment they turn it on for the first time.
It would be easy for Microsoft or chip manufacturers to pass the backdoor keys to the NSA and allow it to control those computers.
No kidding. And would Microsoft actually do that? You know the answer is yes, because they’re already in bed with the Pentagon. They may have even developed the spy-chip in the first place at the request of the Pentagon — sorry, NSA — and simply ladled Digital Rights Management on top of it — either as a property-rights cover story, or a property-rights wet dream, or both.

geos handled memory far better.
i once ran geos and windows testing opening windows from geos and then geos from windows over and over.
it worked twice as well if i used geos first
the crashes were glorious

I've never really been one to upgrade to the new windows OS as they come out, but I must agree that I had to do it because I really hated the functionality and layout of windows 8. Windows 8 ran smooth and I like how they began having apps and other things, it just seems like finding files and different things is a hassle with the way the menus and everything are laid out. So far on windows 10 I like it much more. It seems to operate just as fast and smooth(surprising to me since they just released it)and I like how the start menu and navigation have been changed around. In my little time with 10 so far I'd say I like it and it suits my needs well.

I can view the size of folders in 7? Sometimes it won't show up and I'll have to go to properties to see it, but most times just hovering does it.

you can hover over it, or view it in properties, but you cant view it in the window itself. and it usually takes a few seconds for the folder size to show up if its a big one
what i'm talking about is the view itself in windows explorer, heres a pic:
http://s17.postimg.org/i9bx9jkin/Win_EXP.jpg (if the pic doesnt work try the link)
notice how you see the size of the documents but not folders. you used to actually see the folder size in that column in XP automatically

Oh.. Well I never really use that feature. Even when that would've been an option I would have still just used properties or hovered.

I am upgrading right at this very second. If you get tired of waiting for it to download automatically, you can download a thing that makes it do it immediately. Just google for it.
If it sucks, you guys will be the first to know. I upgraded straight from Windows XP to Windows 7 and skipped Vista and 8, so I'm a pretty good test subject.

So far, it's complete and utter shit.
It's slow, it's hideously ugly, it's "privacy" settings are the most atrocious terrible things I've ever seen. This is probably the least private operating system that money can buy. I mean seriously, what the fuck microsoft. Everything defaults to ridiculously invasive lack of privacy. The fact that these kinds of features even exist is pretty scary. They just default to letting "apps" access my microphone, my contacts, my camera, my location, etc. etc. They just default to letting "third parties" use my data for advertising. Thanks Microsoft, I'm sure that'll cause no security or privacy problems at all!
It's completely fucked. It makes Windows Vista look like a masterpiece of privacy, beauty, and speed. Fuck. I can't believe I "upgraded" to this shit. God damn it's so ugly and slow. Think I'm gonna just install Linux.
If you have Windows 7 DO NOT UPGRADE

It's handy to be able to see folder sizes at a glance if you're trying to free up space. I just use a third party program for that purpose though, "SpaceSniffer".

they are trying to get market share away from linux.
which is going to fail because linux uses less overhead, and you dont need virus software slowing you down.

I don't think Microsoft is too worried about losing out to Linux in the consumer pc market at the moment. The free upgrade think just seems like recognition that few people are willing to pay for an OS upgrade anyway. By and large people don't buy copies or upgrades of Windows, they buy a computer with it already installed.

http://www.softpedia.com/blog/Windows-8-Keeps-Losing-Users-as-Linux-Continues-Growth-449031.shtml
ms has this theory that its because linux is free.
but the reasonS for using linux are so many, that free is just lumped in under "convenient" for me.
i can run mac and windows software, i can run many game console software i do not need virus protection and my computer runs much faster.
theres no traffic from my computer to microsoft.
so, you can have an os that limits you.
or one that lets you have everything that os has, and then builds on, while being free.
i have a client who is mentally challenged, i was getting thrice weekly service calls for viruses, blue screens and lockups.
i installed ubuntu. i still hear from them regularly. but never to fix their computer

To feed the paranoid people: Why do you think it is a free "upgrade"? I mean just think if it has a built in backdoor for the NSA, and now everyone is upgrading and running it.

and for those using windows 7, they keep installing new .exe's to our computers without permission......hidden within these recent updates are new files being added, most likely backdoors n shit for those who arn't upgrading.
CompatTelRunner.exe which its name would suggest is testing for compatability with windows 10, but u never know for sure. thats ontop of the icon that can't be made to dispear in the notifications area, believe the only way to get rid of it is shifting through the windows folder and to actually delete the files. pretty sure i tried to disable it with msconfig that didn't even work

the only reason windows 10 exists is because windows 8 was so awful, they needed a down grade to windows 7, which obviously was different from 9 which leaves 9 to come in later perhaps with a different name. thusly you have 10 which is the pull back to 7 with all the extra bullshitty baggage from 8, just to make it different ENOUGH so that people dont realize they'd be better to stay with 7 in the first place.
encouraging a downgrade from 8 is bad for bidnesss, lets just make a shitty version of the one before it

I think the last good O/S they had was 7 and especially Vista. 8 and 8.1 was a total failure. 10 they are trying to keep a bit of 8.1 alive. 10 however is better than 8 and 8.1

Why would anyone want Mac or Windows? Windows never quits shoving updates down your throat and Mac is just so expensive for the same exact hardware that's in a PC. Go Linux.

there has never been a "good" windows.
if you want a "good" os, you'll have to try different linux distros.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/technology-science/windows-10-man-updates-pc-6175142
Quote:
An unfortunate Windows 10 user was left red-faced after upgrading to Microsoft's new operating system - when his pornography catalogue began blinking across his screen in a slideshow on repeat.
Excited to upgrade to the new format, the computer-lover upgraded to the new software and left it to 'do its thing', only to be woken by his wife asking why his collection of pornographic images was rotating on the desktop view.
The unfortunate user appears to have fallen foul of feature of the new operating system which pulls through images saved in one of the default folders to be used as a slideshow.
Writing on Reddit under his username FalloutBoS, he said: "Loaded up WIN 10 last night and left it on to do its thing.
"Woke up to wife asking why I set it to rotate all my porn images right on the desk top view.
"I have no idea how to shut that feature off and that computer is staying shut down until I do."
The new Windows 10 system features the same live tiles that were seen on Windows 8, one of which is called Photos.
In what is presumably intended to be a quaint feature, Photos pulls images from the My Pictures folder and shows them on a slideshow loop.
The user added: “Don't make my mistake, keep your private pictures out of My Pictures, no matter how deep you hide them in sub folders.
“My wife is very happy I admitted my mistake on this sub. She said I took my medicine and she now finds it quite funny. Ain't love grand?”
Fortunately, the feature can easily be turned off, with a simple right click and press of 'turn live tile off'.
Alternatively, the problem could be avoided another way.
One Reddit user added: "I guess it assumes you will not save porn into the pictures folder."

Windows 10 sucks cock, it's basically a massive spyware program.
It's a wet dream come true for the NSA though
Even saved files on your harddrive can be looked through by Microsoft and shared with law enforcement or for selective advertising purposes

apple, google, etc. all do the same thing, its not just microsoft
like the guy in chopsticks link said, this is industry standard now. not enough people care about privacy to make it go away, at least not yet

I have never gotten used to it.
I use windows 7 at work and love it.
I had windows vista on my old comp and that was even better then windows 8.
Windows 8 is so confusing its like your on a tablet or something, its the worst layout ive encountered.

i use 8.1 for some things.
8 was a annoyingly bad. 8.1 is somewhat better.
im constantly baffled by the ammount of people who have simply never tried ubuntu or fedora.
and by try, i mean with someone actually SHOWING You enough stuff to where its simple for you.
as soon as i have time to patch it im going to install 10 on virtualbox or vmware.
which by the way will run smoother than installing it on a physical disk, but will still take 2 hours to install for some reason.
i've never had linux take longer than 15 mins.

mind explaining how that works? because it is still on a physical disk. its just booted secondarily. logic would imply it would be slower or equal(unlikely) in speed

Just my own 2 cents, I downloaded it a few days ago, and it actually uninstalled a few applications and software(s) that I had on windows 7, and I couldn't get them to install, so I rolled back to windows 7, and I still can't get them to install, tried cleaning out registries and using microsoft windows fix your fuck ups, just nothing would get em to run.
I did like windows 10, and I don't miss those things that much, so I may run it again, I got my download reserved again so I'll wait for more reviews.

i really dont know but i have some guesses.
first i'll say what i know. i know that i've run windows on THIS computer. specifically windows 8.1 and that i've also run 8.1 virtually. i know that when i run it virtually its a bit faster (although theres obviously some boot time slowness).
i think its because the hardware is virtual, and the drivers are smoother in linux. so to get to the graphics card, on linux i have kernal compiled drivers, on windows i have wdm drivers... they are a step removed.
in the virtualization process they are still once removed so you wouldnt think it would give overhead GAINS, but it seems to, so i assume its because the kernel compiled drivers are THAT much better.
but thats all assumption... i just can see a use = use speed increase, except with some 3d graphics, which is slower, but not enough to annoy me.

There's options galore for turning off that crap and many online articles which guide you through the steps.
