its a fraction of the size, alot more simple, id bet anything it goes from windows login to loaded and running the fastest.  The only advantage the new os's might have is they might be designed to work with newer motherboard bios's better to do that quick load shit to go from power to login quicker, but again im not 100% on how much of that is related to the operating system.

but once loaded, windows 95 has alot less shit going on, so i see no reason it wouldn't run quicker.

that said there isn't much software around these days for it, and newer apps are optimized better to run on these newer os's, but as far as the OS itself, well like i said i bet that is faster because there ain't shit there.

its like Dos, that shit loads like bam, because there isn't nothing to it

and i bet PAINT on windows 95 is still going to be better designed than the shit on windows 10, i still don't understand how they can fuck the simple shit up so bad, paint on windows 7 is crap.  i used to use paint for simple quick cropping n shit, but its too useless and annoying on windows 7

Only reason im going to get 10 is cause I think 8 is shit, which is what my laptop has.

My work computer is Windows 7 and I love it.  Not getting rid of it.

are you aware that every one of those examples can be fixed? there are dozens of good, free programs that can clean and defrag registry, defragment the disc(windows actually has a native app for this since XP) and detect and remove/fix corrupt files?

OS's get slower because you don't take care of them. if simply having an app installed on your pc, and not in use, is slowing it down..... you are using some sketchy programs.

does this look familiar?

of course they can "mostly" be fixed, however that wasn't the topic and has no relation to the points i made.  which is that most people upgrading will be doing so on 'old' os's, then get a 'fresh' os and think omg its so fast

upgrading to windows 10 doesnt give you a fresh OS, all of your programs stay unless you intentionally do an OS wipe  anything bogging down your uncared-for system will still be there

Windows has sucked ever since they stole the idea from apple.

Windows didn't steal from apple. There were tons of different people at the time experimenting with graphical interfaces for operating systems. Apple didn't even invent it. Sure, the mac set a standard for future operating systems, much like the iPhone did for smart phones, but everything that the mac did had been done before. It was just never put together in such a polished package.

That's what steve jobs was really good at: design. He took a bunch of great ideas and made them beautiful, but none of the ideas were his.

All of the tests that were posted showing windows 8 speed improvements over 7 were done with CLEAN installs of both OS.

-on topic

I have been using Windows 7 since it first came out in 2009 because of DX11. I used it until Windows 8 came out (2012 i think?), and then I swapped to 8 for a few months. I hated how hard it was to find the files that you need and they renamed everything so you can't find shit. The HDD that was running windows 8 died after about 7 months, so I lost the windows 8 install (had no disk). I just installed windows 7 (since I still had keys for it) and have been using it ever since. It is a perfect OS for most people, and was the last MS OS that had standard window's features

i didn't realize windows 7 was windows 95 or 98, good to know.

reading up on windows 8 tho, interesting 'trick' they did for startup was saving the "state" to the harddrive, so its not even booting up, its just loading up the last boot per say.  so in reality you can only compare the "first" boot it ever does for a fair comparsion of OS speed.

Which is why when you look at a few of the tests you'll notice windows 8 is actually slower, because its even more bloatware than windows 7 was, granted most are faster, but the point i was making was it wasn't something magically faster that you would upgrade for.  in all the tests im seeing the results are so small you really wouldn't notice them except for the startup compared to windows 7 i suppose.  but again thats really just a trick, and i have windows 8 on a laptop, windows 7 on my pc, and the laptop takes like 5 minutes to fucking load.  apples and oranges i suppose but you'd think by the claims you hear it would more than make up for that

I was just talking about the actual speed of the operating system:

-how long it takes to open files up

-how long it takes to search

-how many FPS games get

-etc

And windows 8 comes out on top because it is better optimized than windows 7. Some of the comparisons you wouldn't notice, but things like search speeds and game FPS is quite noticeable. When I did my own testing, I found BF3 to give me on average 4-5fps more on windows 8 than 7, and that is very noticeable to a trained eye

The reason windows 8 boots up so fast is because it has a more optimized boot priority than previous versions of windows, ie instead of opening up your internet, drivers, system checks, etc on the initial bootup, it prioritizes opening the log in screen. Due to it's design, it is impossible for 2 idential hard drives, one with 7 and one with 8, to have the windows 7 drive boot up faster.

You probably have more files and junk on your laptop that has windows 8

The details

Wolf Richter at Business Insider, reporting on an article in the German-language newspaper Die Zeit, has the story (h/t the Naked Capitalism links page; my emphasis and some reparagraphing everywhere):

Quote:

According to leaked internal documents from the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) that Die Zeit obtained, IT experts figured out that Windows 8, the touch-screen enabled, super-duper, but sales-challenged Microsoft operating system is outright dangerous for data security. It allows Microsoft to control the computer remotely through a built-in backdoor.

Keys to that backdoor are likely accessible to the NSA – and in an unintended ironic twist, perhaps even to the Chinese.

The backdoor is called “Trusted Computing,” developed and promoted by the Trusted Computing Group, founded a decade ago by the all-American tech companies AMD, Cisco, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, and Wave Systems. Its core element is a chip, the Trusted Platform Module (TPM), and an operating system designed for it, such as Windows 8. Trusted Computing Group has developed the specifications of how the chip and operating systems work together.

Its purpose is Digital Rights Management and computer security. The system decides what software had been legally obtained and would be allowed to run on the computer, and what software, such as illegal copies or viruses and Trojans, should be disabled. The whole process would be governed by Windows, and through remote access, by Microsoft.

Now there is a new set of specifications out, creatively dubbed TPM 2.0. While TPM [1.0] allowed users to opt in and out, TPM 2.0 is activated by default when the computer boots up. The user cannot turn it off. Microsoft decides what software can run on the computer, and the user cannot influence it in any way.

Windows governs TPM 2.0. And what Microsoft does remotely is not visible to the user. In short, users of Windows 8 with TPM 2.0 surrender control over their machines the moment they turn it on for the first time.

It would be easy for Microsoft or chip manufacturers to pass the backdoor keys to the NSA and allow it to control those computers.

No kidding. And would Microsoft actually do that? You know the answer is yes, because they’re already in bed with the Pentagon. They may have even developed the spy-chip in the first place at the request of the Pentagon — sorry, NSA — and simply ladled Digital Rights Management on top of it — either as a property-rights cover story, or a property-rights wet dream, or both.

to be fair... apple really didnt even CHANGE The geos look much. windows did.

geos handled memory far better.

i once ran geos and windows testing opening windows from geos and then geos from windows over and over.

it worked twice as well if i used geos first

the crashes were glorious

I've never really been one to upgrade to the new windows OS as they come out, but I must agree that I had to do it because I really hated the functionality and layout of windows 8. Windows 8 ran smooth and I like how they began having apps and other things, it just seems like finding files and different things is a hassle with the way the menus and everything are laid out. So far on windows 10 I like it much more. It seems to operate just as fast and smooth(surprising to me since they just released it)and I like how the start menu and navigation have been changed around. In my little time with 10 so far I'd say I like it and it suits my needs well.

I can view the size of folders in 7? Sometimes it won't show up and I'll have to go to properties to see it, but most times just hovering does it.
