Choosing a commercial flow hood...
    #21669500 - 05/12/15 11:19 AM (9 years, 8 days ago)

I am trying to decide between the series 2 and series 3 flow hoods from Fungi Perfecti.  They are currently in the process of calculating shipping costs for me.  Any suggestions on which way to go?  The series 2 is 24w by 18h for, what I understand to be close, $1300 and the series 3 is 36w by 24h for around $1550. Do I need the extra room?  Money isn't much of an issue here but I'd like to stay practical nevertheless.

I have researched building my own flow hood.  And the idea interests me.  But it seems like the forums are lacking any step by step tutorials with valid links to filters (that aren't junk) and fans.  That's a bit disappointing, but I've decided I'd rather just pay to get what I need rather than scour the forums any longer.  It's been months and it has made my head spin.

I bought the filter, matched fan, and fan mounting bracket, from Fungi Perfecti, that's used in the series 3. That way, I knew that the match would be right. Shipping costs are much lower, than for the whole flow hood. If you have decent woodworking skills, it's a simple build...

Did the plenum have to be a certain size?  And how did you match the fan to the filter?  I have seen some strange looking diagram, but it looks like gibberish to me.

I just really wish someone could say, here's exactly what to buy, here's exactly what you do.  Cause I would do that.  I really want the series 3 or 4.  And if I could do the series for for 1200 bucks, I'd do it.  So why don't one of you guys who are good at woodworking out there, one who knows good and damn well that you need a series 4 flow hood, make it and post the tut?!  PLEASE!!!

If you look in their catalogue, the fan description matches to the filter (1,024 cfm universal blower, for the 24" x 36" filter). The width and height, are pre determined by the filter size (look at their photo). The depth that I chose wasn't precise, but based on the better photos in their paper catalogs that they send with the order, and from my phone discussions during the order. I was lucky enough to speak to a guy who also assembles their hoods. If you buy from them, they have no problem giving some tips and dimensions. They just won't send actual blueprints.

All one person needs is about 24" squared. I used to use a 4 x 2 hood and it was comfortable for 2 people. $1300 is outrageous for that. It can be built for less than half that. Do your research, read it over and over until it's not gibberish and remember that Google knows all.

If you are going to spend that much money go on Alibaba and look through their hoods. You will get an epic one for that price. Or alternatively get a used one, their second hand price is dirt cheap compared to what the lab paid for it originally.

I wanna see what you're getting into talking about money isn't an issue, buying and burying a shipping container, rocking a brand new AA75x, and now after a 4ft hood lol.

Wanna adopt me?
