first time grow questions
    #22012934 - 07/29/15 01:00 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hello friends I'm almost complet with my first grow and I just had a few questions.

First off I used the brown rice and verm method. After about a week after birthing my cmyc cakes followed by a dunk and roll I saw my first pins coming in towards the bottom of a few cakes. The next day most of the cakes were tilted so I gently examined them to find an abundance of pins growing on the bottom of every cake, nowhere else just the bottoms and sides towards the bottom. I proceeded to simply flip all the cakes over so my babies could start growing up instead of to the sides.

My question is why am I only getting growth on the bottom (now top) of my cakes?

Also I just wanted to know how much air exchange effects growth for both fruit bodies AND pinning?

Most likely insufficient humdity or evaporation on the exposed surfaces of the cakes.  Probably need to mist them more heavily or more frequently.  Could be wrong, I'm no pro.

Are there no holes in your fruiting chamber?  Please explain your setup as it may be partly at fault.

--------------------

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

No, this does not look right...

Looks like low humidity. They're growing where there's the right amount and flipping them could cause the fruits to abort. I would say mist more and make sure there's evaporation going on

Mist the cakes directly? And I have no holes. My setup is 12 half pint cakes in a clear plastic tote with plastic wrap window in the lid.

I already had my first harvest and I only had growth on the bottoms of the cakes but luckily very little aborts. I'm not sure if creepers grow very big but mine ranged from 1-3 inches.

Can anyone recommend a larger strain I should look into? I'd like to have a heavier harvest haha

Also does anyone have experience turning myc cakes into a tray? Id like to try crumbling my cakes into a couple trays if it's not too bad of an idea?

Thanks in advance!

Also I've read you can get a couple harvests off cakes. When will the next batch of Mushies begin to grow if I harvest all of them yesterday morning?

They are currently being dunked over night right now.

your fruit size is a direct result of your poorly constructed fruiting chamber. build a proper FC before blaming the mushrooms on your harvest.

I wasn't blaming my strain? I was just asking if 1-3 inches was normal or not.

Make a proper SGFC, you not having holes in your fruiting chamber is the problem. Watch the videos on this site particularly the part about making the fruiting chamber since you obviously have the making the cakes part down. http://www.mushroomvideos.com/BRF-Pf-Tek

:whathesaid: making a proper fruiting chamber will fix the free air exchange issues that most likely caused the bottom pinning. Size of fruits could be genetics but it's more likely the environment.

Thanks for the link Dr. But should I mist the cakes directly?

And I didn't put wholes because I thought it might lower the humidity so I fanned it with the lid a few times a day.

But can someone say about how long the next batch of fruits will start forming?

Mist it directly.

In the wild mushrooms incur thunderstorms and heavier rains then a puny mister (Given that it's a FINE mist and not spitting otu fat globules of water) could ever muster.

Fanning is not a replacement for FAE. You should have 1/4" holes spaced every 2" from top to bottom (Meaning lid and bottom of tote). To properly fan enough for it to be considered FAE you'd have to fan several times an hour. I'm not down for that.

The next batch can take anywhere from 4 to 14 days after another 24 hour dunk.

Don't roll.

If you roll the 2nd time you will be covering a surface that's been in open air and creating a place for contams to take hold.

Good shit tagyo. I appreciate the specifics and I have a good feeling this next flush will be a better outcome. I'll still holes soon before I finish my dunk today.

Sides to

it helps to get a piece of plastic or wood and add little dots on it every 2". Then put that wood/plastic up to the tote and drill away, rather then measuring out every 2"s, marking, then drilling. I have a flat board I use for this.

Good idea. And you said every 2 inches ALL over the tote correct?

Ok I just cleaned that bitch out, drilled holes every 2" and put fresh perlite and aluminum foil squares down for the cakes. My cakes soaked over night and I just put them in their newly modified home lol.

The cakes had a few pins that are all mostly bruised. Do they even stand a chance or will they mostly become aborts?

They stand a chance.

Did you dunk for 24 hours? Mushrooms are 90% water, that's why a dunk is necessary or they'll be tiny. Don't re-roll.

I've had pins bruise, survive a dunk...come back to life and thrive.
