I am more curious why this is Zimbabwe's most famous lion, what's so special about him?  What wrong with all the other lions that inhabit Africa, not good enough for freakin Zimbabwe eh?  Just because Bob Marley wrote that song about you, what you think your special?

American dentist goes on a trophy hunt. "Guides" lure human-acclimated lion off reserve. Dentist wounds lion, then finally kills him after a long search.
Shit storm ensues.

Not real hunting IMO but this guy's life and practice are fucked. I don't respect this kind of "hunting", but in some ways I suspect he was scammed (misinformed as to the origin of the lion they "tracked"). Unless he was really stupid.

Quite the asshole

Not quite true, I think, I've seen documentaries of African people spearing elephants to death in large groups and shit. Elephants, even fucking HIPPOS, which are the world's most dangerous animals.

He was studied by behavioural scientists and conservation biologists for a long time. He had a GPS collar and was old.

is it unnecessary? we know that the Rhino is endangered but a permit to hint a
rhino is beneficial to conservation of the remaining rhinos, permits for them
are issues to allow only shooting older males, an animal that when it dies of
natural causes does nothing to aid the survivability of the remaining rhinos.
without the fees being paid for these permits the rhinos we do have left
wouldnt be around

we also know that excessive populations of animals lead to far more problems
such as encroachment into human habitation in which far more will end up
slaughtered but it can also lead to starvation of the animals and can speed
the propagation of disease. it helps to have a grasp on how conservation
actually works as opposed to having a knee jerk, emotional reaction to a lion
being shot

Liten, you don't kill wild animals unless they have a proven population that is too large or if it actually is encroaching human territories. You don't just kill them thinking that they might eventually become a problem. When the problem actually arises, only then should you do something about it.

Until then, if you want to kill stuff, go kill bad humans. Rapists and shit, go hunt them. Animal did nothing to you man.

Killing this lion was unnecessary. I'm not saying that killing a lion is always unnecessary.

I probably should have said something like:

It doesn't matter wether he was scammed or not. Shooting a lion for trophy hunting purposes is always a bad idea.

Better?

I did a wildlife conservation/ranger course in Africa so I am well aware of the problems and ambiguities surrounding the environment there. I am actually allowed to take your ass on a safari. I am also only allowed to ever shoot an animal if it's charging us and within 10 meters of us to prevent killing it for no reason. They often fake a charge so you have to be sure. That gives me less than a second to hit it right in the brain. Every guide I have spoken to that ever had to do this was still brought to tears by the memory of having to do it. They were just as emotional about shooting elephants that completely wrecked the bushveld by destroying trees leaving only mopane forest behind for years and years after. Except this time they were emotional and angry because they couldn't understand why the excessive population wasn't partially shot.

It's not black and white. But this guy was hunting for the fuck of it with a bunch of Africans that could care less about conservation and only thought about quick money. Not realising conservation would be the more sustainable option. For their financial situation as well.

so strike against nature for doing what nature does

yet you dont support the death penalty for humans who are capable of knowing
right from wrong as opposed to a creature that's only acting on instinct

If you kill animals for nothing more then sport or "trophy" hunting, I hope someone cuts your dick off and makes you eat it, and pray to god there is an actual hell for you to go to....scumbags.

Only time it's necessary or acceptable is out of necessity, or self defense/preservation.

Ned the lion. Ned is an anti-social, boring square who ignored park visitors regularly. Ned also may or may not have groped an underage female lioness as well.

Ned should've got the bullet IMO.

Cecil by accounts was basically the Zack Morris of the park. It was like luring Zack away from Bayside and shooting him with an arrow and then letting him roam the streets mortally wounded for 2 days before finishing him off.

It was fucked up. If you're going to ice anyone, you kill the screech of the park.
