Aussie travelling to USA in a few weeks for a month.

Hey guys, I'm leaving on the 21st August to go to California to visit my sister. While I'm there I'd like to do my own thing for a few weeks too. Aside from going to vegas for a long weekend.. What are some cool things to do in Cali?
I know a lot of people are going to have trouble understanding my accent from my sister's understanding. She now has the yank accent haha..
Anyway in advance, I appreciate any info that can be offered. Even tips of the way the streets work as I plan to backpack when I go off on my own.

Oh another thing. What's it like with the whole race war and everything going on over there? I'm in no way racist, though I am a pale species and get along with other coloured humans quite well on 99% of occasions. Is there things I should be careful of freely saying etc?

Yeah . . .
Obviously not as much as someone who lives there, which is WHY I created this thread, not to be slagged on.
There was no need to pipe up.. I simply asked a general question.. and got what seemed to be somewhat of a generic answer from someone like yourself.
I got nothing against ya mate, just chill. Trying to get some information for my travels.

I live a bit south of LA in Orange County (very near Disneyland). Let me know if you have any questions about Orange County or San Diego. If you wanna grab a beer when you are in the area, lemme know. Or I'm always down for a day at Disneyland.

Hey there! I have lived in California for most of my life, and I've also been to your country as well. Your country is my favorite vacation destination out of anywhere else I've been, by the way. And your country has the HOTTEST fucking guys I've ever seen. They all looked like 6 foot 5 rugby players, I was drooling in fucking heaven while I was there. rool:
In California there are many cool things to do, if you're more into nature hiking there's Yosemite and the famous waterfall that you can hike up to, depending on where in Cali you're visiting (NorCal or SoCal), I would recommend different things. You definitely MUST check out San Francisco in northern California, and some of the beaches of San Diego and Orange County.
San Francisco is my favorite city in the USA, it's so vibrant and an intellectual and artistic metropolis. It is also where the hippie movement started in the 1960's, in Ashbury, San Francisco. The food is also DELICIOUS as well.
But these places are 1-hour plane ride away from each other, I definitely suggest flying by plane because a car ride from San Francisco to southern Cali would take 9 hours one-way.
If you want a list of restaurants to eat at, let me know what cities you will be visiting.

Crystal G - You love the aussie boys huh :P sounds like my sister lives in the right state to be visiting!!! Money isn't really a worry for me, so more than happy to plane around to get to certain places, etc.
I'm already so much more excited for this holiday now after reading everyone's replies

I'm totally down dude. I'll PM you letting you know where I live and shit. I actually live a couple miles away from a really nice beach too. Just warning you though, the Pacific Ocean by our coast is super freezing cold--nothing warm like Australian waters!
What kind of food you into? California is known for having really good seafood, and you should definitely eat lots of Asian food while you are here. The Asian population is highest in the state of California and New York City in the United States, so authentic Asian food is the best in these areas.
And yeah, Aussie and Brazilian boys have to be the hottest fucking guys. Seriously, what is up with every male Aussie under age 30 being like 7 feet tall and looking like a rugby player?
DEFINITELY hit up Yosemite and San Francisco while you're there.

Sweet sounds like a plan! I'm down in Melbourne, so the beach can be very fucking COLD at times! I have never really been properly introduced to seafood, as my parents have never been big on it nor have any past partners. I do enjoy Asian food, Mexican, Italian.. still exploring my taste buds really, though am pretty open to trying most things.
We aren't all 7foot tall.. in fact most of us aren't. I think the average height down here would be around the 5'10" - 6'1" range.
I do love me a good adventure! I have seen and heard lots of good things about Yosemite.. and San Fran too.
Anyone else who lives in the state and would like to hang feel free to let me know. We can have beers, lunch, dinner, go to the clubs etc, go hiking.. I'm easy go up for anything

You should definitely try MEXICAN food while in California! I've had Mexican food in Australia, and no offense but it was shit. Mexican food outside of Mexico, Texas, and California, and a couple other places are pretty shitty. Not authentic at all. Mexican food in Japan (where I'm from) is the absolute WORST!
I strongly recommend hole-in-the-wall type places for authentic Mexican, not chain restaurants. The kind of places where even their corn tortillas are freshly hand-made.
Italian, the East Coast does way better than the West Coast. I'd stick with Thai food, Korean food, Japanese food, Vietnamese food, and Mexican food while you're here. Although, I've had really really good Thai while I was in Australia, since there's a high southeast Asian population there too.

Oh, and you should definitely eat at In-N-Out Burger while your'e in Cali. It's available in only a couple of states besides California. Bomb-ass fast food burgers that only cost $2 each. It's not like THE BEST burger ever or anything, I mean it doesn't compare to a gourmet burger obviously, but it's something California is really famous for.
Whitecastle Burger is famous in northern California like around the San Francisco/Oakland type area. Avoid Oakland though, especially east Oakland, it's very very dangerous. America is full of crime, it's not like your safe Australian country. Keep your wits about you when visiting certain areas in Los Angeles and things like that.

I'm already so much more excited for this holiday now after reading everyone's replies
Do ya wanna go to the beach mate/man?!.. that's what i'll be saying.. but it won't sound anything like that haha

Oh please. If anything, Australians are just as bad, sometimes even worse, than Americans. In fact, that's one of the reasons I loved Australia so much, is because it reminded me so much of Americans, but on so much more of an extreme level.
A lot of Australians are super loud, obnoxious, arrogant drunkards who love to get drunk and start fights, they are also super racist (actually Australians are IMO WAY more racist than Americans), but at the same time there is a huge surfer and weed culture that reminded me a lot of Cali.

So, I just found out the city that you will be in, and the city you will be staying at is PERFECT for Mexican fare. The city you're at is a predominantly hispanic and Mexican community, so you will be able to find LOTS of authentic Mexican food while there.
I also gave you the name of the authentic Korean restaurant where the owner of the restaurant used to work as the head chef for Kim Jong Il in North Korea. So you KNOW it's authentic Korean food. It's only about 20 minutes driving distance away from where you'll be staying.
Check my PM's. It's not expensive at all either, for $40 you can basically get a 5-course meal for 2 people and get SUPER full.

Just FYI but those tickets are SUPER expensive. Last I saw an NFL game, 1 ticket was going for like $500. NBA is more doable, you can get seats for under $50, but they're going to be the highest seats up where you can barely see anything

I will pay for a better seat If I'm possibly not going to get the chance again, I'd like a decent seat for sure.
NFL may be a miss.. I am still highly considering it though. It's a contact sport.. us Aussie's love contact sport! Though all that padding and helmets :P
I do have other family in Maryland, so I will no doubt be back in the next few years to see them also and revisit my sister.

Very true, some of the best dining in cali for sure from many different ethnicity, however in n out kicks the crap out of normal burgers.
Imo just about all of cali is awesome in So cal there's a plethora of beaches,ski/snowboarding resort, whitewater rafting, atv&dirt bike riding and cool forests and deserts including Vaquez rocks which is an awesome place to trip(as long as you have a guide) They filmed a lot of stuff there.
Northern California has some of the most beautiful places in nature, Redwoods and Yosemite being 2 can't misses,San fran,Hollywood,Venice beach,Santa Monica,Pismo,Jalama and tons of other cities are pretty cool to check out.
I could go on for hours about california but those are some of my favorite things bout cali.

Ehhh don't get me wrong, I love In-N-Out, especially for the price ($1.50 for a hamburger or $2 for a cheeseburger, how can you beat that?) but it's nowhere near as good for a gourmet burger. Still, it's worth visiting, just cause Cali is famous for In-N-Out. And of course, it beats the crap out of any fast food burger.

Don't bother skiing in California. He's coming in August, it's not even ski/snowboarding season. White-water rafting is available in Yosemite, and anywhere along the coast there are plenty of waterspouts like waterskiing and jet skiing and going on whale-watching cruises and other cool activities.

In fact, August/September is prime blue-whale watching season in California. I strongly recommend Ocean Institute in Dana Point, the whale watching cruise is run by a team of scientists and biologists so they know their facts and the tour is excellent. I've always seen whales, dolphins, and seals every time I've gone on their cruise. They usually operate on Sunday mornings.
Dana Point is not too far from where your sister is staying either, it's about 30-40 minutes away.

Oh yeah, that's true. I forgot about that. For white-water rafting you should look into it. There's a chance it may be available in Yosemite, there's a chance it might not be.
But still, there's always jet skiing and waterskiing, which are some of my favorites, and you can do that on any California beach or coastline.
Definitely hike all the way up to the waterfall when you go to Yosemite, it's what they are famous for.

Yeah that will affect the rapids immensely and probably not be all that great depending on where you are. Forgot to factor that in. I just love whitewater and snowboarding in cali. Probably not the best time for either of those. There's tons of other stuff, rock climbing, spelunking,as CG said whale watching is good this time of year.
Never a bad time to go through Yosemite, the woods in big sur or the redwoods ,still some good fishing(if you like that). Renting dirtbikes or quad runners on the beach dunes is always cool. There's some great hiking trails all over california, I used to go to a place switzerfalls but it was recently ruined by a wildfire and disrespectful tourists and locals.
If you are down for a drive I'd recommend heading up to crater lake in Oregon. Grand canyon is pretty close. If you want to party though go to Vegas or find a festoval quick haha

I know a lot of people are going to have trouble understanding my accent from my sister's understanding. She now has the yank accent haha..
Anyway in advance, I appreciate any info that can be offered. Even tips of the way the streets work as I plan to backpack when I go off on my own.
Listen, you're gonna get shot. That's what's gonna happen.
Then they'll charge you 75k to stitch you up.
Is the US really the place you want to go to?
I haven't seen my sister in 5 years man. Her parter is a tightarse with coin.. and it's an excuse to see 'the greatest country in the world' :P

I don't believe that legally he is under any obligation to pay, as a tourist from another country. It's not like he has a social security number and a credit score in the USA, so really, what would the possible repercussions possibly be for not paying? It's not like he owns any possessions or homes or assets in the country they can seize, and it's not like his credit score in his own country will be affected by not paying.

If you get fined or have debts youll most likely be refused entry until you pay next time you go back( if you do)

A few weeks isn't much time in terms of backpacking, but SF and Arcata seemed to me to be the most open places to backpackers, but it depends on what you're looking for and how much money you're looking to spend. There is an obscene amount of homeless/transient people on the west coast, and I'm not sure if you mean hanging out with them when you say backpacking. Mostly their lives revolve around acquiring free food and hustling, but there's definitely some good people mixed in and fun to be had. There's no race war, but there is an endless variety of shady people, some of whom are racist.
Traveling alone is weird, I find whenever I go out looking for fun I end up feeling lost and alienated but then when I just resign to the fact that the world is cold and uncaring I will stumble across something that totally changes my mind and meet people who become like a second family. It's good to do research and plan, but I think the most important thing is to not limit yourself from experiencing the unexpected.

Backpacking is generally seen as hanging out with other travellers, who are generally staying within the same area or region and plan to hang/travel together.
Hanging out with homeless people is hanging out with homeless people.

Yeah well you've gotta have at least some cash to get along with backpackers, but my advice would be hit hostels in SF and try to meet people there. Half the residents seem to be hustlers who make a living buying weed and sending it back home, but there are also some travelers mixed in. If you don't got that do-ray-me it certainly ain't all milk and honey, watch the fuck out for the railroad people, they love stealin'. It the best place in America if you're looking to get into the transient lifestyle, just don't forget your EBT card

There are actually quite a few hostels here on the West coast. I've stayed in one in Seattle, I know they have them in the bay area, and I've seen them in San Diego too.

Some are like a dorm where mostly students live, some are bedbug infested hovels populated by junkies and sex offenders, and some are hipster spots with overpriced bars and lots of guys wearing tight pants and beards. There is a wide variety of hostels in SF at least.
This was my favorite in SF (3 years ago or so):
http://orangevillagehostel.com/
It was quiet and clean when I went there, no-nonsense with friendly workers who didn't rip me off. There are probably better places if you want to party, but if you want a quiet place to sleep and relax in peace this place has alot of foreign ESL students so they keep it pretty quiet and orderly, and it's not staffed by pretentious hipsters, which is important to me at least.
When I went it had 1 bunk in a shared room for like $20-$30/night walking in off the street, which was a good price, but it's looking like they're more heavily booked now. If this is a peak season you probably want to book early because it sucks to be lugging all your bags around town trying to find a place when you're already tired from travelling.

Not in the city. Maybe a hotel in the middle of nowhere off season costs that.

No it's a hostel, which typically has a mixture of shared and single rooms, where you can rent out a single bed instead of a whole room, shared bathroom, shared kitchen, etc. They can be arranged a million different ways but they are typically cheaper and oriented towards travelers and people on a budget who will sacrifice some amenities.

TBH I find the nice rooms at hostels are much better than cut-rate hotels. Most usually offer single rooms too, which would compare to a cheap hotel price. Cheap hotels tend to be more shady and infested with bugs IME. Better to take the best of the hostel world than the worst hotel
It's all a crapshoot on who your roomates are. When I went I was lucky 'cause it was so quiet that I would pay like $25/night half the time and get my own room with 4 beds and bathroom since nobody else booked the room. Doubt that happens in the summer tho

I rolled with my buddy there once and he slid out of his seat on one of those rides that takes you up super high and drops. Well the ride wasn't all the way down but he thought it was so he slid out like 8 feet above the landing ramp and we ended up getting taken to the security office and kicked out this was back in high school though so it wasn't like crazy exciting.

You found hotels for <$25/night?
The good thing about mid range hostels is that they keep their rooms in a way that does not allow for bedbugs. Sometimes it is better to sleep on a rubber mattress (you get a sheet/blanket/pillow, but it's all fresh clean and folded), where a cheap hotel all the furniture, carpet, and same nasty ass blanket the rentboy who used the room the night before slept on are all places which harbor bedbugs. In a hostel it's no problem to treat the rooms, where in a hotel there's really nothing they can do short of getting all new furniture, which cut-rate hotels won't do.

All the hostels I saw weren't anywhere near $25 a night.

Naw that is a reasonable nightly rate in non-peak season. I saw as low as $18/night but heard that the place was shady and infested from other people that stayed there. In the summer I think $35/night would be good for a single bed in a 4-6 person shared room. You'll get a reasonably private but shared shower/toilet for the room, access to a better kitchen than any cheap hotel, sometimes a locker, and the people who stay and work there will be more in touch wif da streets.
It's definitely not for someone that demands privacy. If I could afford it I would maybe still stay in a really nice hostel if I was in a new city tho, and there are really nice hostels in SF but they're booked hard and heavy and fetch more dollars.

I see. What I saw was maybe $70 a night.
I demand privacy, I'm a private guy. When I go on vacation I like my "me" time and peace and quiet. Nothing against hostels, I dont think they're for me though.

Hahaha.
Hostels are honestly a great way of meeting people, finding cool things to do.
I have stayed in them before, so I know what to expect. You can actually get 1 bedroom/1 bathroom hostels and still have your own privacy.. it's not all sharing with smelly random fucks that are hard to be around.
It's about the experience. I'm not a materialistic person, I'd rather stay somewhere, go out somewhere different for breakfast every day.. than get the typical bacon n eggs breakfast which most hotels are likely to serve.

I'm pretty easy going man, don't take offence to much, would be more than likely to check it out more than anything. The only reason I would ever take offence to anything, is if a person is talking/posting utter bullshit for no apparent reason.
Anyone who meets me will realise this. I don't have time for bs/games, I'm all about living a positive life and having fun

Go to downtown Santa Ana. It's pretty much part of Mexico that happens to be on the north side of the border. Probably some of the most legit Mexican food you will find. I'm sure SF has them too, but Santa Ana is where you wanna go for all things Mexican. I know- I was born and grew up there. (not Mexican tho)

Cheif, what would you recommend by the water? Hit up Huntington? Went there the day I got here. Was so surreal.. felt like I was in the GTA game cruisin lol.. my sister listens to a lot of old school punk/rock.. so it definitely heightened that feeling haha

One of my favorite places to trip to be sure... and another good few hours extension from there but totally worth it is mt shasta...
I know there aren't -too- many 14,000 foot volcanoes in aus... so it'd probably be pretty awesome to see You can drive all the way up to 10,000 feet on the mountain, it's mind blowingly amazing up there!

That is a great park. There's not really a bad location for LSD as long as you can be around some nice trees and stuff. If you want to see some really nice redwood country without going up to Humboldt (although it is epic if you have time), Santa Cruz or Big Sur might be more along the path you are traveling and both have some epic groves. Big Sur is one of my favorite places I've ever been.
