Guide for transitioning from PF Tek?
    #22009723 - 07/28/15 01:35 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

When I do a search, I find lots of threads about different teks and links/recommendations. What I don't find is a thorough guide for moving away from PF tek. I'd kind of like to write that guide as I begin to look at different methods of cultivation - assuming that guide hasn't already been written. If that is the case, I'd like some feedback on my ideas.

The target audience would be noob/intermediate members who are interested in experimenting with other teks or going bulk without becoming a full-blown mycologist. The reason is because I think simplification is what makes PF tek so great; it allows noobs to grow with just a basic knowledge of the processes.

Here's what I am thinking:

Preface: Redefining PF Tek and why to move away from it

PF tek is kind of an all-in-one tek. Noobs don't understand the distinct processes/teks that are part of cultivation, such as spawning vs fruiting because of this, and they get overwhelmed by hundreds of teks to choose from. I think this is one reason why it is difficult to move away from PF tek and I would address it head-on.

Chapter 1: basic terminology

This chapter will explain basic terminology by comparing PF tek to bulk methods, e.g. verm barrier/dunk and roll is LIKE a casing layer in a chronological order by process. Providing basic terms will help users to conduct searches better.

Chapter 2: overview of intermediate teks

Spawning teks, casing teks, FC teks,'culture teks' (agar, LC, syringes/prints), and more. This chapter will help determine how far into bulk growing the noob wants to go. Do they really want to isolate strains? How much money do they want to spend on the projects? How much work goes into each tek? How 'bulk' do they want to get? Those questions will be answered here.

Chapter 3: spawning pf cakes (intro to casing)

For noobs who do not want to invest in PC and/or other equipment right away. For noobs who just want more shrooms and do not have any more fucks to give. Also the introduction to casing. Focus on different types of casing materials and fruiting chambers as well as proper sterile techniques, such as building a SAB (let's face it, most noobs probably do not build a box. Links to valuable teks will be provided in each section.

Chapter 4: cultures

Let's face it, most experienced cultivators recommend learning agar as soon as possible. That should be the stepping stone into moving away from PF tek because learning to work with cultures and sterile techniques is what reduces the shortcomings of PF tek. Here I would talk about producing spore prints, LS, and agar cultures.

Chapter 5: grain spawn and other substrates

Overview of different types of spawn material, but emphasis on grains because it seems like most noobs are interested in grains over other spawn. I would provide unbiased info about different grains with links to different teks. Comparisons will be made to PF tek to highlight the advantages of grain spawn over PF tek. Revisit the question: Do I really want to move away from cakes and start working with spawn?

Chapter 6: fruiting chambers

Fundamentals of fruiting conditions, explain the shotgun FC and comparison to other teks, such as monotubs.

Chapter 7: Revisiting PF tek

After learning new cultivation methods, it is important to return back to PF tek and learn to respect it! Links to truffles/Ps. Mexicana guides and shiitake guides.

I have seen and studied both, actually. I just wish it was more accessible. It took a couple months for me to understand what I know now from that info in its current state. edit: TNF has a bunch of great links and everything, but somebody who is used to PF tek who hasn't done any research beyond that is not really going to know what to do with that info. PF tek tells you what to do from start to finish. With 'bulk teks', you pretty much pick and choose your own cultivation methods by combining different teks. That seems to be where most noobs get lost.

I want to do a write-up that encourages spawning/casing PF cakes with different FCs and then move away from cakes by using grain spawn. I am just wondering if something like that PF-style already exists.

Maybe it just isn't worth it to do a write up like that because anybody interested in bulk grows is smart enough to figure this shit out on their own?

I don't think it takes any more brains to do a bulk grow than it does cakes.  Just different information, technique and practice.

He said he's looking for something more user-friendly I believe.

IMO, if you're doing anything and you can't figure it out with all the information here, take a step back lol.

Also, Frank isn't the only guy who grows shrooms on this website

I personally am not looking for a guide. I am just trying to figure out whether I should bother documenting my current project or not, whether I should do a write-up on it, and what I should focus on if I do.

Man! I would love it if this transition would be clear. It's so friggin confusing and overwhelming. I was just actually trying to find using my PF cakes with a monotub (cut up or bring up and mix with been+coco coir?)

Please do it!
