Start putting butter in your morning coffee folks
    #22009133 - 07/28/15 11:48 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Apparently it's wonderful. I haven't tried it myself yet, but tomorrow I'm going for it.

1. Great to lose weight
2. My friend swears he hasn't felt that energitic in a long ass time

I looked it up and apparently it does actually work.

BTW butter was blame for evry damm disease on the planet for decades, but with science getting better and better, it turns out that it is an extremely healthy food. Don't shy away from butter. It promotes weight loss, lower heart attack risk, it's filled with nutrients too.

So year. Butter in your coffee as of tomorrow people, that's an order.

its good if you need a boost for cycling, running, or physical job, but other than that should be avoided doing on a daily basis.

Yeah my brother swears by this, only grass fed butter tho.  He's basically up on all those fads, which is exactly what they are.

Eat a reasonable balanced diet.  There are no shortcuts, and people who make it seem like there are fail to realize that different people benefit from different diets.  It's true that it comes down to calories in and calories out, but it's a little bit more complicated than that too.

I'm 6' 153# and my bro is only a couple inches taller and probably well over 200#.  We're both healthy but I think the difference is I'm less stressed and busy, so I don't have to rely on fad diets.  I take the time to cook, and can't afford to eat out all the time like he does.

Peoplee have reported losing 50+ pounds doing at and they fell like a hundred bucks. They  get better results on blood work and their life  improve. The cholesterol goes down to normal, their blood pressure go back to normal. It's all positive.

It's hard to believe, but it is what it is.

The thing is that a hot coffee will melt the butter and will be digested much faster which contributes to the higher energy.

This is stupid. I heard of this fad on the Dr. Oz show.

It doesn't even make much sense from a chemical standpoint, why would your body process a water soluble molecule like caffeine any differently with some added fat?

Also this will ruin the taste of your coffee.

I'm aware, doesn't change the fact that it has no quantifiable effect on it.

Even if it's an "acquired" taste it doesn't mean that adding butter will make it taste better.

I guess dairy farmers must feel threatened to come up with stuff like this. Either that or it's just a reaction against modernity by embracing "good old fashioned food" meaning northern european style food high in saturated fat. Inject lard into your veins if you feel like it, don't claim it's good for you (make sure it's organic grass-fed lard though, wouldn't want any chemicals in it).

Also, ew.

I put butter in my coffee, its awesome.

Actually I sort of forgot about it recently and stopped, thanks for the reminder. but for a long time I did.

Ideally you should put in grass fed butter and coconut oil.

If I'm going to go all out for milk fat in my coffee I'll use 35% whipping cream, I don't really get the appeal of adding it in a form where it will become a greasy film on top instead of mixing in nicely.

I don't take it to lose weight my goal is to gain weight, but adding fat to coffee makes the caffeine metabolize more slowly providing a longer lasting energy lift and less crash.

A google search of butter in coffee publications has shown no results besides news sites. That's alarming already. In a biochemical standpoint it would increase metabolism maybe a lot faster but your still getting a load of fat and bad cholesterol too. It just depends on how much butter is needed and if the effect outweighs the negatives. I think it's bullshit.

Read up on Bulletproof coffee. It was a big fad for a while involving adding grass fed butter and MCT oil to coffee, but apparently has since been debunked and discredited.

Still, adding coconut oil , grass fed butter or raw cacao to coffee is nice and has health benefits for some.

Honestly try making 50/50 coffee with raw cacao its divine and uber healthy. Add some coconut oil and some honey and you have a super health beverage.

So guys, I did actually try it this morning.

Taste: You don't really see the difference to be honest. If you told me it was just regular coffee I would have believed you.

Energy: I went to work and I gotta say, I didn't feel the normal fatigue I generally feel. I work early mornings. Funny thing is, I dind't realize it until I saw this thread. I was in fact more awake than usual. Or its 100% placebo, either or.

So yeah, basically you're not ruing your coffee. It still tastes like coffee..

Yes personally I do. I recommend putting coconut oil into your coffee each morning, and also a little grass fed butter.

But it depends, there is no one size fits all diet. I personally favor a high protein, high fat, high vegetable and fruit, low carb and low sugar diet, based on simple, natural ingredients, avoiding processed foods, trans fats and artificial sweetners.

I believe starting the day with fat is ideal. So first thing each morning a cup of coffee with coconut oil and grass fed butter is a great thing IMO. Ideally have that with a few eggs- start the day with protein and fat

Remember- its not fat that makes you fat, its carbs, sugar and lack of exercise. The only fat to be afraid of is trans fat.

Yes all those things are true of cream as well. I don't know for sure that butter is better then cream, its just become a fad of sorts and trying it I liked it. But better then butter or cream from a health perspective is coconut oil.

Anytime there is a post on the Shroomery about diet and/or nutrition I get a big laugh. People seem to dismiss something they haven't heard of as a "fad" pretty quickly. I personally don't put butter in my coffee, but I do eat a lot of grass fed butter for the same reasons people put in their coffee. Adding a healthy amount of grass fed butter to your diet is almost always a good thing. And lol, it's not going to make you fat either.

I first heard of the idea through the paleo diet and crossfit communities. The concept behind this is that by eating a clean low carb diet, your body starts deriving its energy from fats instead of carbohydrates. This is when your body starts producing keytones to make the needed energy instead of relying on glucose for energy. The keytones break down body fat into usable energy to keep you going. In modern diets, people rarely (if ever) produce keytones due to the amount of sugars and carbohydrates in standard western diets. The old adage from the 60's that "fat is bad" is changing as new research is consistently finding that increasing healthy fats and proteins in our diets is leading to an overall increase in health and wellbeing.

The paleo diet, low carb diets, and local whole food diets are certainly gaining popularity like the other fad diet programs out there. The big different though is there is real science and a lot of evidence to back up what the leaders in these movements are saying. There is a lot of biochemistry and endocrinology studies being done with some great backing data for those that take the time to research it. Things like the Ancestral Health Symposium always spark great debate and conversation within the community.

What I like most about these movements is the people don't evangelize anything. They almost all found their way to low carb, paleo, etc, by necessity of the other conventional approaches not working. So the leaders in these movements are constantly debating and looking at new science and improving their research. If there is legit supporting evidence, these scientists almost always take it into account instead of being dogmatic with their own ideologies.

There definitely does seem to be a fad element to it. Adding milk fat to coffee in the form of cream is already commonplace, but switch it with butter and it will change your life somehow.

I dont even know who Wolf and Mercola are. I learned that cacao has enormous health benefits from peer reviewed medical and scientific studies, and you can easily learn yourself how amazing it is for your health without resorting to any "woonatics" at all. Medical journals will do just fine.

Not going to bother looking the stuff up. I listen to a lot of podcasts and read a lot, use to be real into reading about diet, nutrition, and food. Literally did this for years. I definitely read some great studies and don't just take shit at face value. I don't the data on hand, but then again, I'm not trying to convince people what to eat.

But yeah, there might be a fad element to putting butter in coffee now, but it's not a new thing. People have been doing it for a long time, and the for those on a high fat and high protein diet, sure is a great way to kick off the morning. For one though, I can eat grass fed butter but the lactose in milk, cream, and cheese bothers me. I drink my coffee black though.

There are a few things that need to be taken into account when comparing most people here's diets with those associated with other cultures.  I think the cultures that thrive on a high-fat diet tend to live in more inhospitable places than most of us are used to, where food is more scarce.  I don't think we have the same needs as less developed cultures because our lifestyles are different.

I am maybe someone who could benefit from something like that as I'm on the light side of things and I have a hard time getting enough calories, but I really only like a tiny splash of skim milk in coffee.  I love whole milk, but not really with coffee.  I'll stick with putting butter on my toast.

all this shit is fad bullshit, yes there are some benefits that can be gained
from eating cacao but it's not some actual superfood that people are making it
out to be, sure, you could see some benefit from a paleo diet but again, it's
not necessarily safe and it's not all it's claimed to be because it's based on
horse shit pseudo science just as most of the podcasts and websites this shit is
promoted by are founded on

What's retarded to me is that you didn't actually label who you were talking about and yet you still have someone arguing with you.
The paleo diet wasn't "created", it was documented and explained. Do you mean Robb Wolf, the author of the book, 'the paleo solution'? I looked up pictures of him presuming that's who you were talking about and he seems to look fine to me. I'd really like to see evidence of your claims.
Considering Patlal failed to link evidence for his op and managed to get people to blindly put butter into their coffee, i'll understand if you're actually talking out of your arse as well though.

People who drink large amount of cacao every day have much much lower risk of all cause mortality, meaning their overall average risk of dying from all causes combined is significantly reduced.

The same is true of green tea but even more so with raw cacao.

It will especially prevent heart attacks.

it was created. the foods we eat today arent the same as was eaten 30,000 years
ago, man altered these plants through hybridization and selective breeding,
we've done the same with cattle. this is a fad diet that was created based on
the same crap vegans spew about what man has evolved to eat based on some
arbitrary nonsense that they choose to believe. a true paleo diet would have us
all out picking berries, scavenging scraps from other predators, knapping spear
points and hunting mastadons. our entire lives would be centered around seeking
food and simply surviving

depends on how you want to view a lifespan. I'm sure there were some that lived
to be extremely old but they base this life expectancy shit on the average
lifespan of a populace. this means that infant mortality and death from accident
and wars are factored in, it doesnt mean death from natural causes

Yes cacao and green tea are both very rich in antioxidants. Cacao is also rich in magnesium, which many people are deficient in, and magnesium deficiency is strongly correlated with heart attacks.

It also contains theobromine, which has a euphoric, relaxing effect. The magnesium also has a relaxing effect, and eases aches, pains , cramps and twitches.

It has many other health benefits as well.

This is hands down the best budder I have ever tried. I've tried butter from numerous local farms but it doesn't even compare to Kerry Gold.

What is coconut butter vs. coconut oil? I like coconut oil, except that it makes everything taste like coconuts. I can get used to it, but it's pretty inferior in flavor to budder. The fat and lack of dairy is a huge plus though.

Coconut butter is coconut oil. As far as I know.

The coconut oil I'm referring to looks like wax..
Also has amazing health benefits aswell.
Usually eat a spoonful daily.

TLDR

I enjoy putting butter in my coffee.  Butter and sugar.  While the coffee and butter are still hot, you add them together, and while you're drinking it you have to keep swirling it to get the butter to emulsify back into the coffee, but those well-mixed sips are delicious!

But I don't believe (and I never heard until this thread) that there are health benefits.  It's freaking coffee and butter.  I don't think there's any health benefit whatsoever.  But I will add that if you're a fatso and you don't drink coffee, starting to drink coffee will make you lose weight.  Just like if you did meth, only to a much lesser degree.

Coconut oil is amazingly good for you.

Definitely not dude. I'm talking legit studies published on .edu sites. I've read lots of them. I also read people in the paleo/low carb community talk about the studies that say fat is bad. This is a legit community of scientific people if you look beyond the internet sensations.

Busy with work atm, was just taking a little break and posted here. Lol, I know if I start looking into the links and old studies I'll get sucked in. If I come across any, I will be sure to post them here. I get what you are saying dude, and what is funny is I had the EXACT same reaction when I first learned of this stuff. But after doing a couple years of research and paying attention it just started to make sense for me.

Ok... so at the expense of not getting shit done, I'll bite. But first, lets agree on one thing first.

:getstoned:

Ok, so first of all, this is by all means not the best I can do. Just short on time atm. Most of the best stuff I have read over years was by listening to podcasts, and these studies, articles, or publications would be released and they talk about it as news when they come out. I don't have a list of these articles, and the density of crap information on the topic has increased over time significantly.

Just a couple links, but definitely not the best I can do...

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22826636
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23685112
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22642064
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1113/jphysiol.2002.019265/full

And again, my point is not to claim what one shouldn't or shouldn't eat. Rather, my argument is against the assertion that "fat is bad" or "how is butter healthy" claims.

Wish I had a link to this one, but there was study done that assessed colonial human beings in the Americans just a little over a 100 years ago and compared the amount of protein, fat, and carbohydrates to the ratios of modern Americans. They said the majority of people would eat larger quantities of fat and protein compared to today, even though conception is that we eat more fat than ever before. But the reality is, the majority of the fat we eat is from fried foods. Much of which is vegetable based fats that are highly processed. Like carbohydrates aren't equal, fats aren't equal either. People use to raise pigs for example exclusively for the lard. They used it for cooking, along with making soup, candles, and bunch of other stuff with it.

To address your statement earlier in the thread about the expected lifespan for adults is much longer today than 100 years ago (or during the Paleolithic era for that matter). This is chalked up to a lot of things really, but most of which is hygiene and modern medicine in regards to traumatic accidents, like bone fractures that would mean the difference in life and death. Things like the flu would routinely kill people that otherwise were very healthy individuals. Antibiotics and science helps extend our average lifespan DESPITE what we eat (as a whole).

Most people that are living to the age of 70 or 80 that take a handful of medications aren't "healthy" people. They are just kept alive by some amazing science and innovation from our species. The fact we have water treatment plants and shit toilets don't hurt either. Doesn't mean what eat should accredited to good health though.

Tons of peer reviewed articles and publications on Loren Cordain's website. Seriously, the paleo community is filled with more legit real scientists that call out scientific quakery faster than any other diet/health community. It really reminds me of the shroomery in regards to how myths and taboos about drugs are dispelled from this community. Nobody in the community evangelizes their own ideas. The paleo diet (as a modern concept) changes a bit every year based on the community findings and evolves collectively. People don't stick to old dogmas from research form the 1960's. Most of the fat phobias come from "The China Study". Almost all vegetarian anti-fat propoganda stems from this somewhere along the line. This study of course is being disproven more and more over time to the point now even the government is changing its stance on healthy fats (like coconut oil and grass fed butter).

A good breakfast consists of two slices of brown bread with cheese, a piece of fruit, a bowl of yoghurt, a cup of coffee and a cigarete.
Boom, powered up and ready to face those assholes at work again.

Paleo diet seems legit to me. Humans eat almost anything, but since we became farmers we've been limmiting our diet a lot.
Aparently the average lifespan of humans went down from 70 to 55 when farming was invented, and child deaths went up.
It's probably also because our lifestyles became less suited for our bodies, which are made for walking, not for standing or heavy manual labour and certainly not for sitting all day.

Also, never try to argue with Pris. It doesn't matter to him who's right, it matters that he wins the arguement. You can't talk with people like that.

Lol @ your breakfast. Not too bad there. I prefer 2 or 3 fresh eggs, sausage or bacon, and 2 cups of black coffee. Then 2-3 dabs to set the day off right.

You are pretty much dead on in regards to the agriculture. It's a double edged sword really. It enabled society to boom and our numbers to explode, yet this definitely has a number of sever side effects and problems that our ancestors didn't have. But then again, we aren't running around killing animals with stone tools anymore either.

I know, such a bummer. now I just buy animal bits in the grocery store, and they often remove the bone and blood because people can't handle that shit anymore or something.

Your breakfast sounds good too, by the way, if a bit too hearty for me in the early hours.

For real dude. I am going to start buying my meat on the whole sale and letting my keep the bones. The throw away the best parts. We use to eat the organ meats first, now they are least desirable to most. I wish I was raised on liver, but that shit just tastes gross to me unfortunately. Such a shame, the organs have the highest nutrient density of all the parts on the animals. Wolves and lions and such kill the animals and eat the organs first. Hunters all around the world eat the heart raw after a fresh kill. Some tribes even drink a concoction of blood and raw milk (loads of fat). Something to it if you ask me.

It's a bit weird that I have to buy the bones seperatly for my soup, yeah.
Modern life is pretty weird... and most people think it's normal. It's like parts of the world have turned into one big theme park, where everything comes from the shops and nature is a commodity.

Weird.

It's even more bullshit that it's illegal for me to buy meat directly off a farmer without having a government facility process it. Just like I can't buy raw milk because it kills people or some stupid bullshit.

Seriously it's the same logic from the FDA that is making our food pyramid. The same people that say drugs are bad. Just saying... the government is full of shit on most things and food is no exception.

Well the way you worded it makes it sound like the government runs the butcher shops themselves, when in reality the health department inspects private facilities to ensure that they are sanitary. I think there's a pretty big difference there.

The farmer can actually run his own butchering facility as long as it is inspected as sanitary by the health department. Most of them just don't want to do that.

Prisoner1 are you honestly unaware that Rae cacao is extremely healthy and good for you?

It's ridiculous that you assume all these health ideas are from those two random websites, wolf and mercola or whatever , for absolutely no reason.

I base all my diet and supplement ideas on published scientific studies.
