On The Cheap
    #22008552 - 07/28/15 09:13 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Alright folks. Its been 10 days since I've inoculated my first jars. Its working out just fine. 3 out of my 6 are a little slower then the other 3 and one of them still hasn't shown any sign of colonization. I figure my first flush will consist of the 3 most mature cakes then adding the rest when there ready. I Want to inject the inactive jar with some spores but I'm not going to buy a syringe for just one jar. So I've been thinking about having a small second setup. I'm looking at spawn bags. I'd like to experiment with other tek and have a backup producer of mushrooms to meet my deadline of Shroomfest on August 29th. Also its fun to have another thing going. I'm looking for help to get together a bare bones grow bag side project with the least amount of materials as possible. Was thinking about using ShroomSupply for almost everything. There like the cheapest provider of bags and they also have everything else I need. Saves me a trip to Ace on my bike as well. Thoughts?
Also one of the leading spore merchants have a special on random cube spore syringes for 10 bucks.

It takes a bit of skill and diligence to go from spore to fruit in a month.  Might not even be possible if you don't have the spores yet.  If you were to spawn a cake to grain, maybe.  But you'd have to be real familiar with sterile tech to do that.  And if you buy a pre-sterilized grain bag it's likely to contaminate anyway since you have no way of knowing if it was prepared properly.

Not sure what to suggest other than cross your fingers for those cakes.

Sure, I don't really expect that to be the case. I want it more as a side project that will provide fruits relatively close to my first cake flush. In the event that it fails I'll have a backup, but its mostly a way for me to experiment with a different method of cultivation. Plus I feel like spawn bags give you more creative options when it comes to fruiting. Any suggestions would be nice.

You could inoculate a bag of grain and let it go invitro. Doesn't get cheaper than that. But your yield will suck.

Patience is key.

Wanting things on time in this hobby will always lead to a let down.. They know when you want fruits and will take their sweet time :P

You should get some jar's and do some grain!  If you have a PC and are confident that you can follow proper procedure when making a liquid culture, then I suggest going with that..  A lot of people are going to say agar in my response and they are right.  If you can do agar first, do it.  If you don't want to, then a honey LC or some other form is right up your alley for conserving spores.

Preparing bulk is super easy and not intimadating.  I have a giant pot method for coir in my signature, there are also countless other TEK's to follow.

The PF tek is the hardest one.. If you can do it, you can pretty much do anything in this hobby.

Lol the little devils. I wish I had a pressure cooker. I have to end up spending a little more in supplies because of it. I actually went ahead and bought 1 pre sterilized rye berry spawn bag from a reputable sponsored merchant as well as 5 spawn bags with clamps for flexible future experimentation. I plan on doing a mono minitube or simple invetro setup. I also got the Cambodian syringe for its extremely quick colonization properties...so I'm kind of rigging the election here. I WILL HAVE MY SHROOMS BY THE 29TH!...but still I would be a ass to assume anything. I'm still obviously very new to the hobby and I'm very much learning as I go along. I feel like I'm in Mycollage class. Its a amazingly fascinating and rewarding form of science.

You might want to drop by the myth's page in my signature.

The whole different strains thing is just a selling tactic..  Yes, some of them are faster, but it has nothing to do with the strain.. It's more of who is isolating and taking spores.  Now, there are a few strains that do show specific characteristics, but it has no baring on if it is going to colonize fast or not.

It's not like weed at all..

I was thinking about using the bags for a WBS and some kind of fertalizer or poo for a mono minitube. Still dont have a PC though. Do you think It would be alright for that setup? I thing I really need one for allot of this tek. Ill keep my eye out on craigslist for one.

That makes sence. The only reason I thought that was because a fellow Shroomery buddy started his jars the same day as me and saw heavy colonization on the 2nd day! He motioned allot of folks noted its aggressive growth. I assume its the latter though. Some of my holes never colonized on my first inoculation. One has been completely dormant. That's another reason I got the second syringe. To annotate the dud.

I would get a PC before getting into this hobby.

You need a pressure cooker to sterilize grain. If you want to produce bulk amounts, you need one. No way around it. Save up your money or pawn some shit and buy one.

Yeah but you're just going to upgrade in the future. 10 dollars will not get you what you want.

cheapest way is just making cakes because you dont need a pressure cooker.
Some people like to do just a few grows each yr and never buy a PC nor upgrade from syringes to cakes.

Yep, don't bother with grain if you're not going to get a PC.  And especially don't bother with pre-sterilized grain.

Why not? I just want to be able to sterilize stuff. Sorry but I don't have 100 bucks to spend on a sterilizer. I probably never will. There are allot of things I would spend 100 bucks on before a pressure cooker. If I can fit it and sterilize it for 15 bucks I don't see what the problem is. I will be wasting time but that's about it. I don't plan on doing massive bulk grows ether...Hell, I've never even done shrooms before. A big reason I started growing was to try them for the first time. I know a good ol PC is the best way to go but its simply not in the cards for me right now.

Yeah I understood the inherent risks of pre sterilized anything. My options are limited and I ordered it from Shroom Supply who hold a high standard of quality. Still a gamble but still a relatively safe bet I assume.
