I saw those man, kinda felt an instant attraction; you have a look about you shared by the kind of people I tend to gravitate towards in this life. It's like I can see the wisdom behind the words you write here in your eyes.
I love these kinda threads personally - it's quite a sad truth for me that in order to seek out people who most often think and feel as I do, it has become necessary in this age to seek out the correct online forum - and I tend to feel the lack of physical presence with others quite strongly. So a picture of those you're talking with often is a wonderful thing IMO - it just gives that slight sense of.. I don't even know what. But I feel it is good.

Thanks for the compliment Jokeshopbeard. I certainly gravitate towards kind individuals of every stripe. Remember that wisdom is not so much a personal achievement so much as the sharing of those who have come before us, passing through us.

I hear you man, quite how you keep so much of that wisdom stored up in your head is beyond me though! Perhaps I'm thinking of wisdom in slightly different terms though; I tend to think of it as the kind and compassionate nature of our species that can only really come to light when one makes an effort to focus one's mind, clear of the many distractions of thought.
Could you elaborate on your understanding for me please?

I just quoted this for glimpee: "And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit. For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow." - Ecclesiastes 1:17-18
Wisdom is unlike knowledge in that it is not a content of ideas, things that have to be memorized and recalled on demand. The Buddhists have these Dhyani (meditating) Buddhas, each with its own mudra (hand gesture). One of them is called Amitabha - Buddha of Discriminating Wisdom. Just knowing about this is merely a matter of knowledge, but Discriminating Wisdom itself is something that is best manifested in our dealings with other beings. For me it is the best choice of words to be used here, or in my hypnosis session. I have time to erase here, but in a session I have to be quick and hopefully spot-on with an adjective or a metaphor with less opportunity to 'back-peddle' if I make a mistake.
The words I chose to use with a menacing old street-bum with a pipe wrench was to invite him to hang with us for awhile. That was 40 years ago. He was a bit deformed, homely, but what I perceived was at the core of that moment (he was trying to stroke the long blonde hair of my friend Kathy with his greasy Aqualung fingers) was that he was profoundly lonely. I offered him some friendship. His eyes widened and he said "I have to do something!," and ran away from us as soon as I treated him as a human being. Wisdom there was clear perception of his brand of suffering which was causing his offensive behavior, followed by an act of compassion. The bum didn't permit the compassionate action, but a pelican once allowed me to approach it, grab and hold it while a friend removed the fish hook and wire from its neck.
Discriminating Wisdom is often referred to as Judgement in the Tenach (OT). Remember the wisest of men, Solomon? (1 Kings 3:20-28). The Word of God (an unfortunate translation of Logos) is not the written word, but a mind open to the Logos, "the mind of Christ." Here is a reference to the word of God that is a metaphor for surgical precision in one's discrimination (or Discriminating Wisdom):" For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." - Hebrews 4:12. I think the word "quick" in this verse means 'alive,' rather than 'fast.' It is a transcendental consciousness that yields clarity and penetrating perception to any given situation, and is precisely what you say: "the kind and compassionate nature of our species that can only really come to light when one makes an effort to focus one's mind, clear of the many distractions of thought."

I dunno about a lot. Try to get out as much as seems sensible. Used to work 3 days in a row, have 4 days off. 24 hours a week of work, loads to play. The lady and I would start work days with a game of folf (frisbee golf) and the days off with a hike to a lake or some trail we'd never been to.
But now I'm working closer to 60 hours a week. And many of them are stressful. So I wear out. Days off I spend trying to nourish myself with some good food and music. Before work I spend my time trying to get ready by planning and streamlining objectives. So not much hiking any more.
The good news for me is that it's a temporary gig - a little over a year at most.
I live in Montana which has a good population to land ratio. If you like the outdoors it's a pretty good gig

I'm a very spiritual person. I work 2 jobs and I write...trying to get my book published right now...I volunteer at a nature center, and work a paid maintenance job. I'm very interested in shamanism, mysticism, eastern religions, astrology, psychedelic drugs, nature, even more western religions, but tend to think about new age offbeat stuff. Just a little about the man behind the picture. I'm 25 btw, I know I look young. Peace

Well, consuming distilled spirits like vodka doesn't necessarily make one a spiritual person as far as I can tell. Intellectual curiosity about all manner of spiritual practices and disciplines might mean that you're intellectually inclined, and who is interested in inner disciplines and techniques. What do you think it means, essentially, to be a spiritual person? Have you considered that this is not a quality that one cannot earn or assume, but a description that is only legitimately assigned to someone by the perceptions of others (like the 33rd degree in Freemasonry)?

I guess it doesn't matter whether I'm "considered" a spiritual person or not. It doesn't matter to me at least. But I do know that I have strong belief in God and consider God to be the most important part of my life. I think about God every hour of my life even though I'm not part of any religion. That's why I describe myself as spiritual. Intellectually inclined...maybe so that is a good way to describe myself as well.
This is all pretty new to me though. The first 18 years of my life I only cared about sports and the next 5 I only cared about girls. Ever since I read Alan Watts, I have become intellectually spiritual inclined. I thought spiritual was the right word....you go on dating sites and they ask your religion and I say "Spiritual but not religious"....meaning I believe in God and it means a lot to me, but not part of any religion. I don't know, I'm not sure if I agree that you can't call your own self a spiritual person Spiritual- 1. of, relating to, or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.
I read a lot about spiritual stuff, so doesn't that make me spiritual? :|. Not trying to start beef or anything but I may disagree with you on this.

Please feel free to disagree, no beef about it. I am NOT new to this spiritual trip, yet I hesitate to tell anyone that I am a spiritual person, because if I were to replace the word spiritual with the word 'loving,' I would be coming from a completely egocentric place. A person's love is not measured by how much [s]he loves, but by how much [s]he is loved by others. And if I were completely honest, I could not tell you that I am much-loved by others. Look at how that looks in print and then say it aloud as if you were talking to somebody next to you. Say, "I am a much-loved person." Kind of sticks in your throat doesn't it? I am an intellectual relative to others I know, but I used to dislike being referred to as an intellectual when I was in college, because I quite presumptuously preferred to think of myself as a spiritual, or an awakened person, which I saw as being superior to be called intellectual. But there was the error of wanting to be superior, and in college I was still in adolescence (which ends at age 25 - your age). I also didn't like being called 'sensitive' because it sounded effete or what later would be called 'emo.' Now, it doesn't matter what others may call me because I am whoever it is I am, and I am at an age where in truth I don't care one way or another. I have no personal reputation to maintain to anyone beyond my own personal integrity, but I find it as presumptuous to call myself a spiritual person as I do a much loved person or an enlightened person. I may be more spiritual, loved or enlightened than I was earlier in life, but I cannot compare myself to anyone else. There is no legitimate measure of such things. BTW, Alan Watts' The Way of Zen was the first spiritual book I ever read, probably early in 1973.

Not down, just showing my age around the eyes, which have long lashes and gives a downcast appearance, and I've always had a darkening under my eyes, not always so noticeable. I'd prefer to say Endomorph rather than "fatass," which is obviously pejorative. I wouldn't call anyone "fatass" except maybe Cartman, but he is more of an asshole, and fortunately, just a cartoon.

There will come a time when every evil That we know will be an evil... That we can rise above

I don't know how to post pics on here so let me paint you a picture: I'm extremely handsome, more buff than jokes beard as well as more bullet bikes, and more wise looking than markos although I am only 27!

I love that poster. Any story behind it?

I forgot that pic was out there. It's a stylized pic of Guru Nanak, 15th-16th century founder of Sikhism, used to advertise a Nepalese hashish store. It is an actual poster (poor English and all) supposedly that I purchased from the former Psychedelic Solution in NYC 20+ years ago. I recently purchased a tin sign made to look old and weathered with a similar theme (even though I don't really use cannabis except rarely when offered by a friend in the privacy of our home).

way to go girl. you've got a great set of hair. as a dude who grew up with a "widows peak" and baldness running in the family I'm jealous of any good locks

Oh hey thanks! My family actually has no idea how I got this hair actually. Haha or the curls. Must be the hidden Irish. It's usually better looking. I just felt pretty last night regardless.
Hey don't feel bad! I've seen plenty of good looking widow-peaks. plus bald is sexy!

I don't feel bad but there is totally that sexual drive to find a partner with great hair genetics
I think I missed the bald gene. My grandpa on the maternal side of the family still has all his hair at 86. I still have all of mine at 27 but I've had the widows peak for as long as I can remember.
Here's the misses and I:
