Tarot

I've been going a lot deeper into Tarot lately.  I use the Rider-Waite deck.  It's a great deck for so many reasons.

I'm starting to think that the Tarot is a story book form of encoded wisdom from pre-Christian times.  The ram's head is all over.  The kings and queens especially are associated with it.  The Devil card strikes me as a blending of imagery of the ancient ram god with satan from the bible.  References to Tarot cards date back to the 1300's.  Surviving Tarot decks date back to the 1400's.  I think that ancient pagan spirituality survived in pockets of Europe into the days when the Tarot cards were being created and standardized.  The christians weren't able to totally stamp it out and Tarot became a medium to preserve some of those traditions.  The Rider-Waite deck certainly emphasizes some of those themes.  The artwork is beautiful.

I'm enjoying the Tarot more and more, and always striving to learn more about it.  IMHO Tarot is a window into the soul when used with wisdom.

My dad read tarot daily. taught me before I could read. Long time ago. I see it as a lens.like my glasses. I went through a phase as a teen early 20s identifying rasta. not entirely on board with rasta any more although I do really believe that Bob Marly was a true prophet. Anyway my biggest takeaway from rasta was that we are the lens. God/universe/creation flows though us. no external lens needed.
For what it's worth. that is what I know about taro. I feel the same way about scripture. Good to read but it is puting something inbetween you and the Power that is not needed. Be the lens and if you need a tool use the vine.
You said "window to soul" yeah that's sorta like what I mean as a lens.

Peace and I hope you find what you are looking for.

I have been reading Tarot for over a decade & more. My first deck was gifted to me & was the Rider-Waite. I have collected hundreds of decks as I find the different art works quite beautiful however I only use for reading my first Rider-Waite. Over the years I have fluctuated with my opinion of Tarot, in some aspects in can be used to predict some things but more so I use it as a self-analysis tool, looking deep into my being for the answers.

I take great care with my reading deck, smudging with sage regularly, and it is kept with protective crystals & amulets. I always use my own Tarot card layouts, it just does not feel right using other popular layouts. Also I only read cards up right, whilst I do understand the significance of a card upside down, I try to avoid that as much as possible.

Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack, in the chapter relating to The Fool:

"Imagine yourself entering a strange landscape. A world of magicians, of people hanging upside down, and of dancers in the bright air. You can enter through a leap from height, through a dark cave, a labyrinth, or even by climbing down a rabbit hole chasing a victorian rabbit with a pocket watch. Which ever way you choose, you are a fool to do it. Why look into the deep world of the mind when you can stay safely in the ordinary landscape of job, home and family? Herman Melville, in Moby Dick once warned his readers not to take a step outside the ordinary path laid out for you by society. You might not get back in. And yet, for those willing to take the chance, the leap can bring joy, adventure, and finally, for those with the courage to keep going when the wonderland becomes more fearsome than joyous, the leap can bring knowledge, peace, and liberation."

- The Fool, the card it self kind of represents just that, childish and foolish, but the truth is being a fool can bring you the most profound moments and experiences in life. This western world we live in has layered our minds with restraints, rules, controls, you are a fool to stray from your path in life otherwise. Dig a little deeper though, unshackle your mind by any means from meditation to natural drug use, and the fool can walk a fine line between danger and enlightenment, enlightenment being the hopeful out come of the search we all seek from time to time.
