Food these really cool looking mushrooms in a park growing from a tree trunk. Anyone know what these might be?

Those look like Pholiotas, similar to Pholiota squarrosa. The common local variant here in Colorado smells strongly of garlic. Do yours have any odor?

They should have a brown spore print, possibly tinted a rusty color.

While some of the Pholiotas in that group are eaten by some people, they are not recommended. They have been known to cause severe gastric upset in some people. I know of a case where a man spent an entire evening in an emergency room with the dry heaves and an IV in his arm because he ate a piece of one the size of a fingernail. When the piece finally came up he felt better almost immediately. Still, 6 hours of uncontrollable vomiting and dry heaves is not a fun way (by most peoples standards) to spend an evening. Your mileage may vary.

And since it's often a concern and I haven't mentioned it so far, they're not active.

Happy mushrooming!
