I usually start at the North-facing edge (a meter or two from the boundary of the field), the lowest point of the field or a hollow/depresion. Any of these will generally hold more moisture throughout the year.
I also look for vegetation that indicates moisture and start around there; Juncus effusus (this is a favourite of mine), Epilobiums, Bittercress, Willow or Alder trees, Creeping butter cup, Mosses etc.

Decided to join the forums and share some experiences I guess... Except for the edible types, hadn't been picking mushrooms in over 10 years but the lack of any weed grow for me this year has motivated me to go about the hills and look for some shrooms (I'm in Northern Ireland btw). Like in the good old days!
Last week: It hadn't rained in a long while but I thought I'd check some places out anyway. result: ~125 libs. Not too bad.

This morning: I thought I'd return to the most promising spot and oh my, I don't think I've ever seen libs so big, so fresh (unless I'm mistaken). Since I'd like some input and I wanted to share the pics, I decided to create an account with you fine mycologists...
Ok, the libs... not all of the big ones display the marked pointed cap but I think they all are libs (is it possible that the point kinda flattens out if they open so big so quickly?). I haven't picked such fresh ones before and I think the conditions were perfect for them to grow massive. A lot of them display marked blue tinge all over (especially after a bit of bruising) so I think they're all active. Would love confirmation though.
Here are a few pics:
compare the 'normal-size' libs at top to the giant ones at bottom!

That's it for now, all the best and happy gathering!
Yo many of your shrooms are not libs. Be careful what you pick. Smell your shrooms.

I've only started this year but I'm learning to do it as intuitively as I possibly can. Don't over-think it; there's no need because this kind of activity is what humans evolved to do. We are hunter-gatherers at heart and with a bit of practice it goes from impossible to easy to do.
It's not easy-peasy but once you've got it you'll understand.
My technique is to scan the field and look for tiny differences *within* the field. No field is a uniform pasture. Each field has little dips, patches where water gathers, patches that catch the sun, areas in the shade, areas where the grass is different, paths trodden by people or animals....
Look for these signs. I'm finding that libs have a habit of growing on the 'verges' of these areas. For example on my last hunt I was trudging around a field for hour an hour with no finds. It hadn't rained for a day and I was about to give up when I had a brainwave - I thought 'are there any dips in this field?'
Although the field was flat enough for a football pitch, by looking across it and looking purely at the level, I could see there were a couple of areas where the ground dipped slightly. When I went over, the grass there was damper than the rest of the field and I found libs.
It may just be coincidence but there they were. It may be simply because I refreshed my mind with a new tactic - that's something that works for me too.
If I find my eyes glazing over (it is tiring on the eyes to be scanning fields for hours on end) I look up at the sky or look around at the scenery. Even a few seconds break can refocus your eyes. A lovely lady I met shrooming taught me this technique - she said Native Americans did it when gathering mushrooms. Whether it's a spiritual trick or there's science behind it doesn't matter - I've found it works for me and it worked for her too.
As somebody with a massive fetish for hypnosis I'm adept at changing my state of mind. One trick I know it to repeat 'mushrooms' inside my head. Saying out loud (or in your head) the thing you are looking for is scientifically proven to help you find what you're looking for. Don't ask me how this works (because I don't know) I just know that it does.
The other thing I do is I look for *any* kind of mushrooms that grow in field. If the conditions are right for an *any-mushroom* they're more likely to be right for libs. Don't ignore a mushroom even if you can tell if it isn't a lib - go over and introduce yourself to the said mushroom (literally, metaphorically, whatever floats your boat) because the more mushrooms you find, the more likely you are to find libs and the more you know why the "not-libs" aren't libs, the easier it becomes to spot the magic libs when you do stumble across them.
The other thing I do is look for as many factors as possible - is there more sheep shit in one part of the field? Is there jung grass growing in one part of the field. I find that the libs tend to be at these points. Finding an area the sheep have pebble-dashed or a good sprouting of jung grass doesn't *guarantee* you libs but it seems to push the odds more in your favour.
Of course, when you DO find yourself a lib the best advice is to look for it's friends. Often they grow in clumps. It may have only been one you could spot from head-height but when you bend down to pick up your prize, have a *very* good look around. Look into clumps are grass. Look behind you. Check you haven't trodden on any of it's smaller siblings. Rustle your fingers through the grass for little ones hiding away.
These are my tips and I hope they help.
Since I've learned these kind of techniques I've really improved my hauls.

i look for fields with reeds or clumps of grass with really green patches in comparison to the rest of the grass being long, the field needs moisture n reeds show they get moisture too hungover, going tomorrow instead me.

Yep - I found a good patch last weekend. Had I found it this weekend I think I'd have been looking at 100s. As it was, we had just had two weeks without rain.
However, the patch was *perfect*.
What I found was libs growing actually inside the clumps of reed grass and in the large clumps - They were literally clinging to the moisture trapped inside the reed grass and the big clumps.

Hey guys, long time lurker but haven't posted much. I stumbled upon the mother of all paddocks today in East Yorkshire! Literally everywhere I turned there were more to pick.
Here's a few pics, only stayed an hour or so but I'll definitely be heading back in the coming week.

Here is one of the pics from Peak District from Monday. I have picked 97 and ate all of them. I have also found and left behind some low quality ones.

The trip was weaker than what I was aiming at. I just couldn't find more. I think some got picked by other people over the weekend. And it's been very warm so I wouldn't expect a massive flush at the moment.
I had a massive massive Deja Vu when tripping. First I thought that I have been before to the place where I went. Then I felt like I have lived this exact same life before, maybe even more than once. It was an intense new experience to me. I didn't know what to make of it so I ignored it and classified as some sort of short term memory malfunction (this is what deja vu officially is).
On Tuesday I have only found 1 lib. Got lost in fog on a massive moor and had a series of disasters all day long... Nevermind, long story... I cannot be sked to type it... I'm glad to still be alive.

Found a few of these:
 In lots of these places:
After so long I was tempted to pick these:
But I did make some friends!:

Just left with me cider for the evening now. Meh.

Thank you for your input !I had come to the same conclusion earlier. Posting here made me realise what I was doing! Live and learn...
After half-hour in the house, the Stropharia ones had such a strong floury smell I knew straight away. That's most of that tray on the compost heap now. Really don't know why I picked these, they look nothing like the P. Sem. if one ponders the issue for even a second! Greed was the problem methinks!
So all in all, only got 40 standard libs from that trip. I expected to find more after the rain a few days ago but I guess the temps are still too high.
Counted last week's worth, got them into jar, and by adding those: Total Count Season 2015: 151.
It's a (re-)start!
